Advice Is Navy Federal a good bank?
The answer is NO.
Navy Federal has the worst debit card fraud protection of any major bank I've ever seen. Their policy is: 'deny, deny, deny'.
If someone steals your debit card and racks up a bunch of charges you'll be shocked at how cold and heartless Navy Federal will be.
I've been a member for almost 15 years without incident. My debit card was physically stolen and used to buy thousands of dollars worth of merchandise. At first, I didn't think it was a big deal. I thought I would just call the bank and tell them what happened and they would have my back.
How naive I was.
I've been fighting with Navy Federal's fraud department for over a month now trying to get them to honor their fraud protection. I've submitted overwhelming proof to support my claim (way above and beyond what could be reasonably expected for a fraud victim to do on their own) and still have had multiple appeals denied by their AI system.
A fraud manager who I spoke to on the phone verbally told me that I was right and should be reimbursed, but she claimed she didn't have the power to do anything and that the only way I could file appeals was via secure message. Those appeals are automatically denied by AI. There is seemingly no human at the bank who has the power to overturn the AI's decision.
A different customer service person even looked over my appeal with me line-by-line on the phone and told me it was the best appeal she's ever seen. Still, it was denied.
Do not bank with Navy Federal Credit Union.

At nearly $200b in assets they have more in common with the largest banks in the US than they do with the credit union community. They are nearly 4x the size of the next largest credit union. If you want to bank with the big boys just move your account to Chase/PNC/Bank of America/etc. If you want a solid credit union just look around your community for one.

You should keep the debit card frozen at all times. The only time to unfreeze the debit card is when you are at the teller or an ATM.
On top of that, use credit cards as they have better protections by law.
In the mean time, since it is your money ... banks will usually deny deny since it's not their responsibility compared to a credit card. You should file a police report about the theft along with supporting documents. Then send a certified mail with signature return so they have the dispute in hand.

Filing a police report was the first thing I did on day one. It made no difference. Navy Federal has a blanket denial policy and there's nothing you can do to break through it and get justice.

It 100% is there responsibility with a debit card. Yes a credit card offers better protection, debit fraud has its own regulations and absolutely NFCU could be on the hook for this

Youre going to make all the credit union fans very mad.

I'm sure there are good credit unions out there but Navy Federal isn't one of them.

Most community credit unions are not fans of Navy Fed. (Or PenFed for that matter)

And no, I never use my debit card for any transactions other than withdrawing cash from an ATM. The card itself was physically stolen from the mail (new card, same number different expiration date as the card it was replacing).

No clue. But they are organized crime. They also had a fake ID with my info on it but a photo of the criminal's face (I talked to store employees who saw it.)

The easiest way to prevent this is to always LOCK YOUR CARD when not in use.

If I listened to reddit there’d be no bank I could use.
Every day someone else complains about another bank and says “Do not bank with XYZ.” The bigger the bank the more complaints I see because bigger banks have more customers, not because bigger banks are worse and smaller banks are better.
The fact is, no bank is without problems. Period. Fact. Every bank is going to piss someone off at some time. Running to reddit screaming “do not bank with XYZ” is the wrong thing to do. Particularly when you are angry at them because you are currently dealing with a problem.

Navy Federal paid a $1.72 million settlement over blanket denial of debit card fraud claims. They are objectively the worst.

I suppose you didn’t hear about the Wells Fargo scandal. You are simply confirming what we already know, but being hysterical about it, all banks have problems. Every single last one. No, they are not objectively the worst, those banks failed in 2009. Stop being fucking ridiculous.

Anyone who has filed a debit card fraud claim with Navy Federal knows without a shadow of a doubt that they are the worst. Just search other threads where people report similar experiences.
Do you work for Navy Federal?
I notice that employees love to go online and glaze the bank because it's actually a good workplace from an employee POV. The problem is it's horrible for customers.

Yeah, and I work at PNC, Fifth Third, Regions, Bank of America, and US Bank also, among many many others. I get around, see.

The fact is you are just being emotional, hysterical, and just really stupid. Just stop while you are ahead.

I physically lost my card and called Navy fed last week and they reimbursed me immediately. Most of it was taken from an atm and purchases at stores and the card was frozen immediately. I got a replacement the next day. I usually call 2 to 3 times to confirm tho.
