Sizing help Will sizing up help with tops that gape between buttons, or am I just the wrong body type for these clothes?
Both tops fit perfectly in the waist, but are too tight across the bust. I’m ordering online, am I wasting my time by sizing up? I like a fitted waist.

Yes it will help, the gaping is because the bust is too small. But if you like a fitted waist, it’s hard to have both. BUT if you’re shopping online specifically it will be hard to determine which tops do what you’re looking for.
I’d take recommendations/reviews from people who say tops are “bust friendly” because those should be safer to get a fitted waist with.

That’s a good tip, thank you. I can’t understand the fit though because I’m anything but large busted, and my waist is defined but not incredibly narrow. I’ll take your advice on my next order and see how it goes.

I have the same issue, I’m not big busted but I like the same fit type you do. Makes me nervous ordering online, wishing you all the luck!

I’d suggest ordering the next size up and having the waits taken in by a tailor to achieve the look you’re going for.
Bodies can vary from standard pattern dimensions in all kinds of ways — for example, your ribcage might be a bit bigger than their pattern for your size, or your waist might be a bit smaller relative to your bust. I took a pattern drafting course and was shocked by all of the adjustments I had to make to the standard block to accommodate for things like a low bust point, a high waist, a fuller belly, etc. etc. Most people benefit from a bit of tailoring to accommodate these differences.

A quick little trick I do is to sew a snap between the buttons on the inside of the fabric so you can't see it. I've done it to all my button up shirts and it has saved me needing to size up and take in my shirts.

Fashion tape.
I know its frustrating to use tape everytime you wear something, but if you really like a piece, you can try it. Given some time, it can take hardly 2 seconds everytime you use it.

Oh! I hadn’t even considered it and I think I have some! It’s double sided tape, correct?

Yes, its double sided tape, but specifically for clothes (hence the name fashion tape). It's more sticky, but easily removable.
However, for a test run, just use any double sided tape to check if the look works for you. Then buy one before going out.

I do love fashion tape for traveling. It’s such a great hack!
IMO hooks or snaps are a better option for an item you’ll be wearing more than once.

For the Regal, I found that the fit is very very picky. If you size up, the armholes will get larger, and so will the vertical distance between the tops of the shoulders to where the bust would sit. Maybe the latter would actually help you (it's hard to tell given the limited picture here), but there's no real way to know if it'll work unless you try it on.

It's hard to tell from the photos provided if sizing up will help or you will have another issue, since we cannot see your overal frame. I have a large bust combined with narrower shoulders. When looking at me from front, my bust and hips are wider than my shoulders and waist. Therefore a cotton botton down cut in a classic manner will never work on me. If I size up for my bust, then it's too big on the shoulders and waist.
If you are like me, then no sizing up will not help. I wear silk botton downs and if i do buy one made of cotton, I look for sewing fautures like darts around the waist. You will have to look more to find those.

The button-down OP is wearing is already darted at the waist

but even that it depends on how the overall item is cut. Like where are the darts exact placement relative to each person (for example I;m short waisted) and how big the shoulders are cut. This is what cotton botton downs are hard for some of us.
IMO for people with body types like mine, the way to for botton down is silk. Or custom made cotton ones with proper darting placement.

Sure. Just responding to where you said to look for darted shirts, and I was pointing out she already has one on. I think we're in agreement that there are other things that need to be considered.

My physique is similar except I don’t have a large bust (34C at most) my waist is 29” and narrow shoulders

do you usually have issues with cotton botton downs? I always do but my bust is quite bit larger, my size is 32H. So I have a lot of horizontal "volume" at the bust which means I need softer fabric across the bust, so i go with silk.
If you are usually ok with cotton button downs, it could just be this specific shirt is cut in a specific way that doesn't work. If you really love the style, you can go up a size to fit your bust and have it tailored at the waist.

To be fair I haven’t tried one on for a number of years, I’ve been working from home so I didn’t need nice clothes. Now I’m back in an office and trying to spruce up my wardrobe a bit. I may have to do what others have suggested and buy a larger size and have it tailored at the waist.

I just safety pin it and keep it pushing 🤷🏿♀️ i think the bust is odd on the regal vests/blazers

The regal vest doesn’t fit me either and I am very petite. I just gave up on the bust and just wear something underneath and wear it with only bottom buttons

As a petite person, pretty much everything I buy has to be tailored to fit properly. Just life for me. But once you see just how nice things that actually fit properly look, it’s just part of the deal.

Just get a tailor to add a hook or snap to keep it closed. Double sided fashion tape works too in a pinch.

Aritzia doesn’t account for people with a medium-large chest size unfortunately

u/Angry_perimenopause 12h ago
As someone who was teased for being flat chested my entire life, this is completely new to me to be considered even a medium lol
2
u/Technical-Grape-3848 12h ago
LOL I didn’t mean it in a malicious way 🫣 I just find that none of their clothes really account for anything larger than a B-cup in many fabrics. I use to be very flat and noticed as the girls grew how limiting their clothing was to account for my chest.

u/Angry_perimenopause 12h ago
Oh no, I didn’t take it that way at all lol it’s just a new experience for me lol

I’d say the regal vest isn’t great style for someone for a bust, and I’m a 32C, gapes a bit on me too

u/Educational_Fun_9001 14h ago
Tailor, or for the button down have a tiny light snap sewn in between the buttons where the shirt typically gapes. Life changing.

The biggest help for me in making tops works with my chest is a good minimizer bra. I was skeptical, but it makes a big difference!

u/miniapple_eater 8h ago
If it’s not pulling across the shoulders and the chest, you could get snaps or hooks put on by a tailor. I do that with most of my buttoned items.
