Moving to AJ
I'm going to be moving to AJ from out of the area and I found a house I love thats in the area between s mountain view road and s barkley road.
I'm just trying to get locals perspective on this area, I'd rather not get too specific about where the house is but from what I can see this is a quiet area very close to nature but not too far away from the city. I'm looking for a place where I'll be left alone for the most part - I've already explored the mountains enough to know ill live that aspect of it but I guess I'm just curious if anyone has any insights about this neighborhood.
For context I want a decent amount of land (this property has it), I like to be left alone but don't want to be in the complete middle of nowhere, I love hiking and wilderness, I don't mind if most of the neighbors are retirees and as stupid as this probably sounds I just want to make sure this neighborhood is not what people are talking about when they bring up the association between AJ and meth.
Edit: thank you for all the responses! You've all pretty much reinforced what I already thought but since I don't know anyone here it's nice to hear it from a number of different folks who actually live here! Putting an offer in on the house and am hoping all goes well, looking forward to this being home!

I know where Mountain Vw is but not specifically the area you are asking about. The location is great for what you want. It feels more rural out there but you're 15 minutes away from Frys. You could be at Costco in 30 minutes or less. As long as you have city water and don't need to bring water in you should be happy with the location relative to shopping and and craving some isolation.

The water is something else I'd be curious to hear your take on. I haven't put an offer in on the house yet and I plan on asking questions about the water source before I do. It says "private water company" on the listing and based on what I've read I'm assuming it's the Arizona water company. Is that something to worry about? I'm from a place where water is a little more abundant. The house does have an RO filter which is a nice touch.

Umm, a private water company sounds like you'd have to get it brought in. AJ gets theor water from the AZ water company and it isn't private. I came across houses like that when we were looking so that's why I mentioned it. It doesn't day well water either so they must have water tanks?

It was confirmed it's managed by Arizona water company and there's a pipeline to groundwater from the aquifer which is pretty much best case scenario

Arizona Water Company is fine. It’s no different, in my opinion, as public water. We had to replace the line from the house to the meter and AWC was easy to deal with.

I’ve been in that general area for a few years now. Love it! No issues with anything. Great neighbors. The water company is fine. You pay the bill and the water flows. The location is really ideal, tbh. Close to nature, close to stores, close to highways. I made a good choice.

Yay thank you for helping confirm it's a good choice, fingers crossed all goes well from here.

The whole Meth-AJ thing is way stereotyped. AJ is quickly becoming booming place for you g families thanks to the new developments "down south" from where you would be living.
I would worry more about the Rattlesnakes and Scorpions in that neighborhood.

Yeah I know a couple people that live in that area. I hear a lot more stories about wild animals going on their property than interactions with neighbors. (They all have washes next to or on their property, so that might have more to do with it as those are animal highways). I think in that area there isn't city water, it's a private company that sucks. I don't remember particulars at the moment, but one of them got so fed up with the company they dug their own well. There's a number of people with work trucks (contractors) in that area, not all are retirees.

Damn that is concerning about the water. Not really worried about wild animals, but a bad company that's the source of my water is a problem. Do you have any details about why the water company was so bad?

I'm trying to remember what the particulars are... something along the lines of really bad customer service. Paying and them not noticing and fining and taking a long time to undo the mess, sort of thing. They're competition is personal wells, so they don't have an incentive to do better I guess.

I’ve had a house in the general area for about 10 years. We have 0 issues.

Thanks for your comment! One quick question I have Is about the water. This house has a "private water company" is that something to be worried about?

People just parrot what they hear without any personal knowledge about the subject. AJ is not a methy place. There are too many trailer parks visible from the highway and until that changes everyone is gonna keep saying this. The mountain neighborhoods are nice and quiet except for construction noise from bullshit variances allowing smaller and smaller lot parcels.

Mobile home parks are too much of a money maker, even in AJ, so they won’t be going anywhere. A lot of them are unfortunately being bought up by private equity and pricing people out, causing the unhoused population to rise. It’s such a sad thing to see.

If you do move in a would suggest that you do not get Mediacom internet and go with one of the cellular based internets. I use T-mobile and it’s way faster for half the cost.
Media com was constantly having intermittent issues or random down times. When I was working remote it was a nightmare.

We’ve lived in the area across from Goldfield Ghost Town, one street over from Mountain View, for the last 7 years. We love it here. No issues with crime. We have hauled water, and no issues there. I think you will love it if you’re looking to be away from town, and wanting to enjoy the peace and natural beauty of area.

We are at mountain view and southern so close to where you are looking. We have all positive things to say. We moved for the same reasons as you. The only warning I would give is each street is very different. Some streets are mostly new homes and some are older homes. So you can have a million dollar home right next the a trailer home that was built in the 80's. No judgement on either type of home but it will affect the value when you try to sell.

Thank you!! Yeah we just did a full drive-by of the street this is off of and it's all nice homes!!

I live in the more rural area of aj and it can be very nice and away from all the “riff raff” as my mom says lol but it does still creep in sometimes. I live about 10 minutes up the hill and we still get things stolen from us and the occasional wondering person and they’re usually harmless but every now and then we get people trying to walk into our house or stealing things off our property or out of our vehicles but it’s definitely not as common as it is in town. I will say, it doesn’t matter where you live in aj (or anywhere really) you need to keep your vehicles and house locked and don’t keep anything important out. I would also recommend getting cameras and joining Apache junction 411 on facebook. Like I said it rarely happens if you’re further up the hill/ not directly in town but it still happens once in a while.

Any particular reason you hate it?

I rather be on the outskirts and have neighbors further away. I'm in downtown, and the methheads are in abundance. Definitely have some neighbors near me that don't even try to hide it. Nothing to really do here, have to travel for everything. Not much good food here. Paladinos is pretty much it, and it is really good at least. Kinda just a drab place for us. I have lived from hawaii to Georgia and everywhere else in between and this place definitely is on the bottom. Yea the water sucks but that's pretty much all of Arizona. Hard water, so drink bottled or filtered if you have a good one. Plus the snowbirds come here in droves and it can be frustrating as far as the stores get packed, they take forever to buy anything and they fill pharmacy lines up. Most of them are pretty old so there's that. I hear people complaining about them all the time.

Fair enough, the house I'm about to put an offer in on is on the edge of the mountains and I do understand the restaurants are limited but being only 15-20 minutes from Mesa and 30 minutes from Tempe/Phoenix it's really close to tons of options. I'm coming from rural part of the northeast so even having that large of a metro area even 20-30 minutes away is a huge improvement and there seems to be enough stuff in town 8-10 minutes from this house that I'll only need to venture out when I get sick of what AJ has to offer. As far as things to do outdoor hiking is top of the list so this location seems to be prime for that.

It is a good place to hike, but brutal in the summer. Hiking in 120 degree heat is not much fun. But you do have the lake 20 minutes up the road. I wish I was closer to the mountain, and not in the middle of this. Fry's will be your closest grocery store, I dread going there. Always packed but town is starting to thin out with everyone going back up north for the summer. Seeing less and less out of state plates.
1
u/Yankeessuck42069 9d ago
Yeah I've done hikes in 120 degree temperature, did my Bryce canyon/Zion trip in the middle of July haha, it is tough and I know summer will be tough for hiking unless we go early or late in the day but thankfully this house has a pool which I'll be taking full advantage of in those months haha

u/SHIGGY_DIGGY77 9d ago
A pool eh? What's the address? Haha I wish we had a pool in the back yard. Got a community pool across the street always filled with kids though.
1
u/Yankeessuck42069 9d ago
I'd prefer not to share the exact address on a public forum but it's between mountain view road and the mountain itself. A pool was a must for me because no matter how hot it is floating on my back in a pool is the medicine haha.
I drove by a huge public pool near downtown if that's what you're referring to, I'd definitely go there if I didn't have a pool at home but im not a big fan of annoying kids haha.

u/SHIGGY_DIGGY77 9d ago
Not huge, a community pool, and yea I was joking,, don't be giving out your spot on reddit. I was over there the other day, there was a fire, so we got nosey and went and checked it out

Sorry, I forgot about your meth question. This place isn't really like that anymore. You're going to find more of that kind of stuff closer to town where people can ride their bikes or walk to stores. I don't think you have that to worry about. It sucks that so many people think we are the meth capital of the country because that is not the case. Our frys is the biggest one in the state and was built in 2017. They've really done a lot to clean the town up after it was built.
