News Oregon is trying to outright ban the killing of any animal for food in the state.

They've gathered enough signatures to put the petition on the ballot. The measure bans all hunting, fishing, operating a poultry business, and bans the slaughtering of livestock for food. It also bans all scientific testing that involves animals.

This is the first step towards the Vegan communities' ultimate goal which is to make all meat illegal. They're effectively trying to police what you can eat and force you to be Vegan by law. This just pisses me off to no end.

This is stupid and counterproductive. Even in Oregon vegans might be 2-3% of the adult population at the absolute most. More likely it's 1-2%. That means that even if veganism is super popular among political junkies in Portland the majority of adults aren't going to pass that bullshit.

the signatures still need to be verified first before it makes it on the ballot

if enough signatures are deemed to be invalid then it doesn't make it on

We just had this happen here in Massachusetts where canvassers were saying one thing and then handing people a petition to recriminalize weed

Hi, I am not "anti-vegan", but I'm not a vegan and never will be one either and I am from Oregon and I can tell you a bit about what is going on. I've lived in several US cities and towns during my lifetime, NEVER have I ever been spammed by a petitioner until I moved here to Portland, OR. I never even knew there were people who got paid to walk around and basically be living spam to people on the street like that until I moved here.

The petition itself for this has been circulating for over 5 years now, and each year the tactics with this specific one have been slightly more aggressive each year - it's probably why we are seeing it gain so much popularity this year.

The petitioners are everywhere, riding public transit, at sports events, parks, etc. Sometimes you get asked to sign the same petition every couple of days if you are out and about daily. The worst part of their tactics, is that they simply say something along the lines of "want to stop animal cruelty"? and then they shove the petition in your direction, and because almost everyone loves animals, of course they sign it without even asking what it is or anything. It's how we got flouride taken out of our drinking water, it's why we can't defend ourselves when being assaulted without landing ourselves in jail too, too many over-emotional wishy washy granola gullible people here who lack education/critical thinking skills and can't think a step ahead to save their lives, perfect for predatory people to take advantage of.

I'm not exactly anti-vegan either, I'm anti-"evangelical vegan", which is exactly what this is— I don't care if people want to be vegan, I'm a vegetarian, I care if people try to force people to live their lifestyle.

Good luck passing that on a city level, not even talking about the state.

I wonder if most of those signatures are fake. Unless in Oregon most people are vegan.

According to the Portland subreddit, the signature gatherers were just blatantly lying about what the ballot initiative was about.

Then it's probably gonna fail during voting..

Plaster this in the face of every single Vegan blowhard who claims that they do it for the environment.

Is this some kind of joke? If it passes then the people of Oregon deserve it.

Good for them. I doubt they'll get the votes

But it'll still be legal to import meat, yes? Shipping costs...

Even if it somehow passes, I doubt it'll last long.
