It's hard to say that raceswapping made anything a hit, but there are certainly examples of it not causing a flop. The best I can think of is Zendaya as MJ in Spiderman. So, it certainly can work in that kind of circumstance. I think it's weirder in this because it's a period piece where the historical demographics were not diverse.
I also thought it was fine in The Last of Us with Joel's character. Pedro Pascal nailed that role. But, again, historical context didn't matter for that one either.
