Discussion Book Club - “Killing Monica” by Candace Bushnell
Hi everyone! Since many of you are curious about Candace’s book, here’s a discussion thread as requested.
Looking foward to what seems like a very juicy read from the woman who created Carrie Bradshaw.
Cheers

Carries townhome chairs
I bought this pair of chairs at the Julien’s “And Just Like That…” auction. They came from Carrie's Gramercy townhouse set in Season 3 and still have the original AJLT asset tags underneath.
One chair has the cat pillow and embroidered cat seat insert that was highlighted in Variety’s coverage of the auction (“Carrie’s Chair and Cat Pillow”), and the second is the matching rose velvet chair.
I’ve attached underside photos because there are no visible maker labels. I’m curious whether anyone recognizes the original manufacturer, prop-house source, or style influence. They seem Italian mid-century inspired, but I’m not sure.
Also interested in thoughts on whether AJLT set décor has a collector market beyond furniture value alone.
Would love opinions from SATC fans, design people, or memorabilia collectors.
Thanks a lot, appreciate any help!

Miranda & Steve
I don’t understand why everyone’s so mad about Miranda leaving Steve. He was a leach who couldn’t even be bothered to wash his own ass. Th thing people should be mad about is the fact that she lefthim for an even bigger loser.

Charlotte As An Alkie Instead?
They really piled on a lot for Miranda's storylines ... an affair, a change in sexuality, a separation, a divorce not to mention a big career change.
And an alcoholic all in the first season while Charlotte was just a shrill wife and mom with a gender queer daughter who went to a school so liberal they didnt even notify the parents about a name change and then back to work and that didnt happen until nearing the end of the first season.
I liked the subject of alcoholism especially since booze was a big part of the show, but I think making prim, buttoned up, appearance is everything Charlotte the one would have been perfect.
A lot of rich housewives are alcoholics (like my mother in law now sober for decades). They are bored with time on their hands and alone a lot more than super busy alpha Miranda. They could have shown it in a variety of ways until she hit rock bottom a bit like When A Man Loves a Woman but lighter because this is a comedy afterall.
Any thoughts?

Question that is not rhetorical What happened?
Ever since season one, I’ve been itching to hear from someone who worked on this show. There MUST be some first hand accounts floating around, regarding how the show ended up so bad.
Anyone see any leaks or articles about this? Surely someone has said something.
Ps. I know it’s likely just detached elder actors being detached, but watching the show it felt SO bad, that I yearn for a more textured answer than “SJP did it”.

S1E1 opening
Hi!
I was about to start AJLT for the first time. When I start the episode on HBOMax, s1e1 starts with "previously on And Just Like That". Is it supposed to be that way? I've had issues with HBOMax in the past where the episode order of a series was messed up, so I wanted to double check it here before I spoil myself.

I had to keep saying “and just like that” doesn’t exist.
I‘ll be honest. Watching the original SATC and when this scene played unfortunately that reboot Miranda came to mind in which I had to tell myself “two different universes”… ugh

Screw the Sandwich?
I will thank AJLT for making me enjoy the original even more as I am binging through it once again!
Cutting to the chase I am still tickled at Miranda contemplating sex with a sandwich. He was actually pretty cute, no?

John Corbett
I was happily watching How I Met Your Father on Hulu when suddenly the palm licker appeared. Episode ruined.

Aidan Babying Wyatt?
I’m just watching the 3rd season for the first time and I finished the first episode. Does anyone find it extremely weird that when Carrie calls Aiden to admit she wasn’t yah know DJing… that he’s in bed with Wyatt cause he had a “bad night?”
It seems like he just really babies him. Isn’t he like 13 years old? I find it ridiculous he even crashed a truck just cause his dad was sleeping at his new girlfriend’s. I don’t have kids so I don’t know how old they usually need their parents around in that way, but it seems like he acts like a baby and Aiden treats him like one.

Camera work in AJLT is bizarre
Did anyone else notice how odd the camera work is in this show? I think it impacts our intimacy with the characters drastically. There are very few close zoom in’s on characters’ faces. Instead we have rather oddly cropped frames that show the upper body of 2 or even 3 characters at times, so we don’t feel the emotions of individuals while they’re speaking. The characters sometimes don’t face each other fully, but awkwardly face the camera instead of each other while talking (eg. Stanford and Anthony discussing the flowers Samantha sent for Big’s funeral.) Sometimes an extra character or landscape is in shot when they absolutely don’t need to be.
My assumption has been that this is budgetary - I have heard how multiple camera set ups aren’t possible as much in today’s industry.
Or is this just bad work despite a good budget?
Any people here who work in this area that can shed light on what’s going on?

Anyone else hate the damn soundtrack
What a cringe worthy nightmare. I'm a fan of EDM, but they chose the lamest and most annoying EDM tracks ever! And they play these songs during the most random moments too, like why the hell is dance music playing during intimate sex scenes??? Is everyone who worked on this on drugs?
I just feel in general the show is tacky and thats why its detached from SATC in my brain. One of the reasons SATC was so fun is because it's chic and cool. I have no idea why AJLT chose to run away from that very important detail, but alright.

Something needs to be put to rest about Miranda and Steve...
I've often seen the claim that Miranda "only wanted Steve back because he found someone else."
This is regularly used as evidence of how Miranda never truly loved Steve and ... it's absolutely untrue.
Miranda realizes she's fallen back in love with Steve during that wonderful "baby wipe me!" scene in her apartment. She has no idea Debbie exists at this point.
She talks it out with Carrie -- "Steve is so the guy for me!" -- and after finally mustering her courage, she invites Steve out to a romantic restaurant to confess her feelings.
At that dinner Steve tells her he's seeing someone else, and Miranda sits there devastated in a gorgeous rose dress.
Miranda did love Steve, and no amount of AJLT retconning will convince me otherwise.

S2 E3 and my IRL story Spoiler
Hello one and all!
I ask for the internet graces, I venture as a lifelong fan who watched the original finale on a tube television. I feel like enough time has passed to share my story.
When AJLT S2 E3 hit, we were already accustomed to outlandish plot lines and absurd, incredulous scenarios happening on this show. Even so, the armed robbery of Lisette’s jewelry by the caterers during a pop-up event struck an especially unrealistic chord for many.
(Little did we know what was yet to come, but …I digress).
At the time of airing in June 2023, I read commentary on this subreddit and reviews and critiques in a few periodicals I regularly go to for my countertop chit chat, just like I did with every episode. Generally speaking, folks grappled with the idea that Lisette’s jewelry would cause enough seismic interest to coordinate a risky and calculated heist of this nature, and would such a thing actually occur, more or less, in broad public in the city.
I, however, marveled at the similarity between many of the plot points and my own lived experience.
I personally make non-metal jewelry priced ~$300-600 that is not broadly known locally or online (meaning I was not targeted for popularity or high resale value), I held a pop-up in a home that the hosts chose to publicly advertise, I was targeted by people pretending to be house cleaners scouting work outside the home (rather than caterers, not armed thankfully) and had 89 pieces stolen out from under me in seconds. The details that are different about my theft (some key) and the inflated drama needed for entertainment on the show (l’duh) aren’t really what I wanted to highlight here so much as the fact that incredulous stuff sometimes happens! In these stunningly exact details!! We had everything on video and nothing ever came of it. My work was never recovered.
The timeline of my own theft, and the writer’s room work for this season, and the six degrees of NYC creative separation I have, where it is entirely possible someone heard someone who knew someone telling this story, …who knows, I can’t say which real life the writers generated this befuddling scene from. It hit a little too close to home.
Like Lisette, I laid in my bed and cried. A lot. I cried again watching it. I think in all the manic and poop-laden scripts to ensue on this series, the tender moment of Carrie being there for Lisette during what is a true creative grief and artistic and fiscal loss reminded me of what we viewers hold dearly in these stories, the heart.
Stay preposterous out there XO

"AJLT" costumer designer says this hat of Carrie's got her threats
“I can’t believe that people were that invested. I guess the alternative would have been a baseball cap on Carrie, and, I’m sorry, but that’s just not her character," Molly Rogers, a costume designer who worked on "SATC" and "AJLT," said in an interview with The New Yorker.

Season 1 newbie
I can’t stand Miranda and Che… I mostly can’t stand Miranda, she’s freaking me out lol it’s all so cringe! I really dislike the faces she makes during the sex scenes and just find the whole thing insufferable and unrealistic. It makes me totally uncomfortable and it’s not because it’s a non heterosexual couple, it’s literally just Miranda lol. Does anyone agree or is this a hot take ?

Interior Design/Real Estate Identify Couch
Hi all! I managed to snag this couch during the And Just Like That… auction yesterday. I love it but (unlike everything else up for sale) the auction house didn’t identify which episode this couch was featured on. Can anyone identify which character on the show this couch belongs to?
Thanks all!

I thought Aidan and Carrie would work and I was clearly wrong.
Aidan was insufferable during this series. Carrie really tried to make it work with him but they are just not good together. He still holding on to her cheating on him with Big when he recently cheated with Kathy. She even said she understood and forgave him. Idk but I was happy when they broke up.

Do you think they’ll come back for the franchise’s 30th anniversary? SATC turns 30 in 2028…

Finally warming up to it
So I'm on my first watch, I just made it to season 2 and i'm finally finding some enjoyment in it. Granted i do have a glass of wine that is accompanying me. But still, It was a TOTAL hate watch at first, to the point where I couldnt figure out how anyone even liked it. Now I feel I've cozied up to it!
