Discussion In 1981, Xerox Corporation introduced the Xerox Star 8010, a workstation that included the first commercially available computer mouse. This mouse, along with the Star's other innovations like a graphical user interface (GUI) and Ethernet networking, helped pave the way for the modern PC

Discussion Computer museum.

I'm obsessed with all things tech and planning on visiting a computer museum this fall. I'm thinking either the one in Mountain View, CA or the Mimms museum in Roswell, GA. Which do you all recommend and are there others worth checking out?

I found the box sitting on a shelf. I actually bought this new in 1976 and programmed it for a while. It was my first microcomputer.

I recall putting it away when the power supply failed so I don't know if it will still power up. Is there a safe way to test it, and what is a Rev F KIM-1 with all manuals in the original box worth these days, working or not?

Help Identify a specific, odd power supply

I’ve been trying my hardest to identify this specific PSU in a blurry pair of photos:

• It is Enlight Corporation, from the logo and the early Enlight case

• It is Pentium II era, but may have been used earlier

• It has the really strange rear venting (any similar I find have the circle vent, or multiple rows)

And before y’all recommend just using a different one, the challenge is fun.

Help Got this older pc without top cover for $30, could you please help me identify it?

Post image

The only definitive knowledge about it is it was in production around 1988 (thanks to graphics card) and needs at least a few new capacitors, I tested it first thing I got it and a few blew. In image, top is b:, middle is 1.44mb b:, and the bottom is hard drive (I assume.) more things to help Identify, came with 286 boot screen floppy, has a weird 2 pcb sound card running off of one slot, (actually has Ethernet and phone line with it as well, the video card is the video seven v-ram vga copyright 1988 Assy 650-0116 (fcc id d2a62ltjwbjc), has another thing in 3rd closest slot to motherboard, containing links to the drives and hard drive, main motherboard labeled ev1806 rev e everex systems, might have molex ports?, looks to have 3 cpus?, ram (or what I assume is ram, off to the side right side of motherboard labeling) is set up like an apple 1, has dip switches?, cpus look socketed, the only one that I can read due to dust buildup is labeled “everex 7c-00121-0 7060-0002 1040aaa Japan”, does not seem to have fan other than on power supply, as one ide(?, at least pre-ps2 port,) connector on power supply, supposedly for keyboard and/or mouse, has in-built speaker, and the power supply is the model number pa-4201-1 outputting 200 watts with ports on back for the modern pc power supply jack, with the pentagon ish design and also male/female port (cannot remember which is which,) adjacent for monitor. This is the only information I can see right now, If I find more I will comment it, any help on this is greatly appreciated.

Edit: Thank all you wonderful people for the suggestions on what pc this is! I have concluded it is an Everex 386is! Not only this, it might be (at least slightly) modified! on farther inspection, apparently there was another drive (I am not the best with everex pcs, (This is the first time I have heard of one,)) that has been swapped with a hard drive of (currently) unknown ports and storage! Rest assured, when I get this information it will be first notified here. on another note, I do believe I failed to mention a speaker added on, might also have some off-the-shelf parts in there! (Thank you u/Xfgjwpkqmx for mentioning it,) now there are still uncertainties with it, but for sure I will either stream on twitch or post to YouTube (Which one is unclear, or might also do both,) to make sure it works and for you amazing people to help me if anything goes wrong! I cannot thank you enough for what you have already done! You are an astonishing community of people in which it took less than 6 hours for you all to find the model!

EditEdit: as a token of my appreciation, I will also dump all of my floppy disks that I also got there, will take a bit, it is over 100. Minus two though, they are sealed Panasonic drivers.

EditEditEdit: /srs

Help Debian 12 on Sun E3000

I have been playing around with various operating systems on my E3000 that I posted about a few months ago and I ran across something that is a bit depressing... I also have a Sun E450 and the Debian 12 sparc build runs fine there but when I try to start the installer on my E3000 I get a "Division by zero" error. I attached a video of trying to boot the installer. I am using a Zuluscsi device to attache the iso to the system as I dont have a cd or dvd burner of any kind. I dont have any special config on the Zuluscsi, I just rename the iso image to ISO3.iso and it gets picked up as a CD drive attached to the machine. This entire process works just fine when I run it on the E450, I went all the way through the installer and rebooted the system into linux....it just works. The E3000 is very close to the same hardware but error...

My E3000 has 3 cpu/memory boards with 7GB of ram, 6 x 400mhz cpus, and I have the pci I/O board with a quad ethernet and a basic GFX card in the pci slots. I tried with and without the GFX card as the E450 didnt have a GFX card but that didnt matter. I have only 1 disk, 1 dvd drive, and 1 tape drive connected to the system. The E450 has 4GB of ram, 4 x 400mhz cpus, and a pci scsi card (for the drive bay). The firmware for OBP and Boot prom is the latest version I can find, all boards are updated.

I was given the idea by AI to try installing using the E450 and then moving that drive to the E3000.... That "may" work if hacked together but I would really like to figure out how to get the install to work on the E3000 if its possible...which it should be in theory...

Its an old system, I know, but I do love it. If anyone has any ideas or you happen to have done this on any of the EXX00 as I believe this would be the same for all of these systems as far as I can tell they are all just scaled up versions of the same architecture.

1 thing to add...it is always the same error code. When I enable fcode-debug I get this error:

{6} ok ftrace

f474c0

f53f60

If that adds anything for anyone who knows this.

Help IBM 560e Screen Size Swap

Hi! I was able to source a potential replacement screen for my IBM 560e, which seems to be from a 560 (lcd is a Hitachi LMG9925ZWCC). It seems as though 560 and 560e panels are interchangeable, but I have the 12.1” model and this screen is the 11.3” version. It came with the entire lid, ribbon cables, inverter etc.

My 12.1” screen has some moderate vinegar syndrome and dead pixels. The dead pixels aren’t too terrible, but they’re a bit distracting. The vinegar syndrome doesn’t affect use.

Would it be feasible for me to change my 12.1” screen (including the lid with the parts inside) with the 11.3” one? Information is very mixed online, with a mention of graphics drivers being an issue? Is that something I can correct by getting the correct drivers instead?

I’m happy to just plug it in to try, but I’m worried it could damage the motherboard somehow. Is it wrong to worry about that? The connector is identical.

I was the last student to go through the electronics/digital logic course at my High School. When the teacher was cleaning out the workshop he offered me this relic with no back story. I've kept it as a talking piece on my desk but I haven't been able to Identify what model of computer it was a part of. Anyone see something I may have missed or have an idea what specifically it was a part of?
