Melee We're BTS, organizers of Smash Summit Spring 2017, AMA!

Hello r/smashbros!

I'm Ken (@Hot_Bid) and I'm here with Grace (@graceleecho) to answer your questions about the Smash Summit Spring 2017. Here's a picture of us.

Here are a few of the major changes we're making:

  • There will be more actual melee (roughly 12-13 more serious Bo5s than last time)

  • Instead of straight double elimination bracket, we will be doing a group stage! There will be four GSL style groups where the two winners will advance to the upper bracket and the two losers will be in the loser bracket.

  • The group stage will have a group selection that will be streamed live.

  • We will be letting the community choose a few of the fun events we do

  • There will be mafia!

I'm Ken (aka Hot_Bid). I'm a Falco main and also the creative lead on the Smash Summit Spring 2017. In the past, I've worked on StarCraft and Dota events as well as with TeamLiquid.

Grace works as a project manager / smash mom on all the Summits so far. She'll also be here to answer questions like which player can't eat spicy food and who she's yelled at the most.

We'll be here until 3:00 PM PST. The compendium launches Friday at 1PM!

Edit: Thanks for all your questions!! We may still answer some of them but this AMA is officially done. Check out our compendium tomorrow!!

Low Tier Iron Man will actually be an option for the community to select.

What we'll be doing is instead of just having low tier characters, it will be a mix, where each player has a budget to "buy" characters for their iron man roster. They will not be able to buy all upper tier characters.

This idea sounds sick.

This is honestly a great idea and helps a lot with balance. There are some pretty big differences among the "bad" characters in terms of viability.

Like, Bowser has next to no redeeming qualities as a character. On the other hand, DK is basically a real character if you remove all of the top tiers. If both characters are allowed, why would you ever pick Bowser over DK? Every low tier tournament that I've watched usually ends up with most of the competitive entrants simply picking Ganon/DK/whatever low tier is the best out of the group.

Giving the players a point buy system means that there is a much bigger incentive to play a less good character that you happen to be adept at instead of just playing all of the best available characters.

Really like this, a lot of the time 5 character iron mans turn into fox/falco/shiek/marth/one mid tier character, this will help turn it into something more interesting with diversity.
