Ima be honest. I hate it really bad. I have nothing against Smash4 players and I hope this doesn't offend you guys lol. It's fun when you play against Melee players in it tho cuz of their playstyle
it doesnt need tech skill to be a good game. I personally dont like because there arent that many options in the neutral, there are not any really fun combos or potential for combos like the other games have, and it rewards defensive play.
Smash4 definitely lacks Melee's flashy true combos, but I personally love the increased focus on strings over actual combos. True combos are fun to watch, for sure, but from a strategic standpoint I think requiring a little bit of prediction to complete your combos makes actually playing more fun. When ZeRo or somebody strings their opponent across the stage, it is extra impressive since they had to predict their opponent's response every step of the way to complete the string.
As for neutral options, for many/most characters I would definitely agree.
You do realize that a lot of Melee's combos aren't necessarily true combos right? You still have to properly read DI and tech options. Melee isn't spamming tech skill and auto combos at all, that's what a lot of Smash 4 players tend not to realize. It requires the same thought and mindgames as Smash 4 and Brawl, just simply at a faster pace.
DI and smart tech are definitely key in Melee, as are mindgames with your opponent. This is true for any Smash game. However, Melee DOES have more true combos and longer true combos than Smash4 due to differences in game physics/mechanics. This is compounded by chain grabs, which can take some characters (especially fastfallers) from 0% to kill percents.
Even chaingrabs aren't braindead by any means. Marth's chaingrab on spacies is extremely percent and DI specific, you need plenty of knowledge and decision making to take that chaingrab far and convert it to a kill.
Slhg doesn't fix the core issues with the game and it fucks up some recoveries, plus you have to grind RNG to get it and also good like finding any tournament that has a SLHG ruleset.
EDIT: If you're coming here from the future, a) welcome and b), the guy deleted his comment but he was basically saying everyone should play smooth lander heavy gravity.
It's actually p easy to get, you just have to burn your golden hammers. I don't like the game mode tbh, but it's relatively easy to setup and get into.
There are many reasons for someone to hate Smash 4. Most of the reason is that it removed many of the technical skills required in melee, ultimately making it not nearly as fast paced. The game may look nice too, but the Single player is mediocre, and the Online is still not up to modern online game's standards in terms of communication. There's also no rank system, something that should be on most competitive online games.
I don't like it because of the mindset behind it. We told Nintendo what we wanted and they made it everything but.
It's like asking for a new bike for Christmas and getting a sweater.
