Hey Samox! Hope I'm not too late. I know everyone is here is a smasher, but as a fellow filmmaker, I also wanted to give you props.
In 2011, I started developing a doc series on an underground scene (not Smash) that I didn't end up following up on (ended up doing a narrative feature instead). But I did shoot one episode as a pseudo-pilot and have always remained really attached to the idea. The series structure I came up with was basically the same as the Smash doc. I feel like we're kindred, filmmaking spirits in a way.
I absolutely LOVE the Smash doc. I've rewatched it multiple times. To me, the brilliant thing about doing a doc in this structure/format, is the ability to get that "in the trenches" tonality. So many docs, as great as they might be, have this "bird's eye view" vibe. You never feel stuck in the action, you very much feel like you're in the dugout. Most other docs are like looking at a beautiful photo of the grand canyon, yours is like actually getting to be there.
I think that is a huge part of why the doc has been so good for the community to build hype and garner new players. When you're watching the Smash doc, you feel as if you're apart of the action. I was completely ignorant to the entire smash scene before the doc, but even I could feel the nostalgia, the stakes, etc. as each player went through the history of the Smash community.
I really look forward to whatever you do next. I know you've mentioned that there is another esports doc idea you have, and I would love to see that come to fruition. Esports is on an upward slope, but I think docs like yours are what could actually help bring them to the mainstream.
So, I guess I should throw a question in here. If you do end up committing to that esports doc, when will you be starting production? Will there be another Kickstarter? Where are the best places to keep up to date (Twitter? Facebook? etc.)?
