Purpose of uploading notes MST124 exam?

Hi all, I know the notes will be used to check for cheating/AI use but I was wondering if this is all they are used for?

Just trying to figure out how detailed I need to make them. I imagine if you select the wrong answer you get the question wrong as it’s computer marked, but was wondering if you wrote down the correct answer in your uploaded notes would you the checker amend it to be correct?

I imagine this isn’t the case. How detailed should your notes be? I have a habit of skipping steps in the exam for speed and not writing to the same level as a TMA, would this matter at all?

BSc Physics step up from year 1 to year 2 - Opinions?

Hi, I have my final exam for year 1 BSc Physics, the modules I did were

- Discovering Mathematics

- Essential Mathematics 1

- Essential Mathematics 2

- Physics and Space

Year two I'll be doing:

- Core Physics

- Remote experiments in physics and space

- Mathematical methods

I found year 1 relatively easy. Essential Maths 2 was challenging and new but I enjoyed it and kept up.

What is the knowledge jump to year 2 like? I'd be keen to hear people's experiences on if you noticed a significant difference, if it threw you or not or if it just felt like the natural progression. Reason being is I've found my final module (physics and space) very easy and I'm nervous I've lost my mathematics skills and that I'm going to get a shock come 2nd year (did my modules part time so did my maths modules last year!)

Would be really keen to hear people's experiences going from 1st to 2nd year, either full or part time.

What is the point in the Forums anymore?

In my first year the forums for my modules were always super active, through tutors and peers. But this year, especially during assignment weeks where I have the most important questions, there is no answer at all. Not even from tutors. What’s the point in having them if there’s no replies coming?

How does the academic year run with open uni?

I want to do a full time degree and I was just wondering what the academic year looks like. Do you get breaks? Like Christmas, Easter and summer holiday like you do at traditional uni?

"Pay Later" option when registering for modules

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to get ahead of the game and register for my October modules with the Open University.

I need to contact OU about paying through Student Finance, but in the meantime, should I just select the “Pay Later” option when registering?

If I do that, will I still be able to pay through OUSBA later if needed?

Sorry if this is a silly question, just want to make sure I don’t mess anything up. Thanks!

TM470 question

I'm currently doing TM470 and something I'm a little confused about is how different should TMA02 be from TMA01?

As far as I can tell from the wording of the assignment, TMA02 will have a lot of what is in TMA01. I scored pretty highly in the first assignment so what I've been focusing on is all of the tutor feedback points (which there was a lot of) and then of course updating the project logs, the project management chart etc.

But ultimately a lot of my TMA01 is in TMA02 which feels worrying lol. I've tried to add other "new" parts as well such as further literature review etc.

Anyone have any advice on this? Is this how it should work? Or should TMA02 be really quite different from TMA01?

Quesioning whether to join

I am 30 years old. Just moved to the Netherlands for my partners work. I am feeling completely destabilized and currently feeling very distant from my current role as a graphic designer (the influx of AI and dismissal from clients). I want to move away from this role and get into more research and strategy. Hence, I am thinking about doing a bachelors in sociology (my focus is on moving to social design) and maybe an additional in psychology. I am also currently studying B1 level dutch, trying to fit into the new environment. Frankly I am also looking to enroll cause academia has always given me a sense of stability and structure which I am really craving for.

Has anyone started an Open University degree while navigating a major life transition, career change, and learning a new language? Did it feel manageable, or did you wish you had waited?

What is MSc psychology conversion like?

I have a 2:1 in English literature and creative writing, a primary pgce, and experience working with disabled children as a supply teaching assistant. I'm looking to work in the NHS or in HR, and am considering the MSc psychology conversion course, but am worried I might find it very difficult as I have an arts and humanities background. Can anyone who did this MSc tell me what it's like and who I should contact to understand what I'd be getting into?

Career options post-DE300

Hi all,

This is my first every Reddit post so please forgive me if this is in the wrong place or has been asked a million times (I searched but I want an up-to-date answer). I am embarking on my final module (DE300) in October and wanted to know what work experience I should be getting now before I graduate with my BSc in Forensic Psychology. I am not too sure what the pathway is or how I can best prepare for opportunities after my degree.

Thank you for any and all help.

Is it me?? (Rant)

So I don't like my tutor and I need to know if it's just me being sensitive and having an emotional reaction, or something I need to actually take further.

I posted before about getting a disappointing grade and my tutor tearing it to pieces and had some great and reassuring comments.

But it's gotten worse. Over the course of my assignments, the feedback is just awful. I'm not necessarily bothered by the marks given but my tutor provides little to no explanation for the marks given.

I had to provide a plan and the only comment on it was "your plan is fine" but gave me 8 out of 10.

In most of my assignments my tutor provides 3 to 4 paragraphs on formatting even though we aren't judged on this and I already keep my formatting how its preferred.

Then I get 3 paragraphs of vague stuff I didn't include or that the tutor disagrees with. It never includes what to do differently next time.

The tutor is also really personal in the stuff I get pulled up on. For example, the tutor will comment that they disagree or dont like something or they wouldn't do it. And that's it. I just get comments about not attending the tutorials and about how I would do better if I did.

My partner is doing the same module and the feedback he gets is great. Fully thought out responses, stuff to work on and none of it personal. - it also means that im aware that my tutor has criticised me for the exact same things my partner didn't get criticised for.

Finally, its completely clear that my tutor hasn't read my disability information and isn't putting in any of the reasonable accommodations I asked for. This includes little things but mainly how I cant attend tutorials and rely on transcripts or subtitles for recordings and would appreciate notes and slides emailing if possible.

Im trying to figure out if this is just my adhd getting annoyed at criticism or my tutor should be doing better. I've even emailed for clarification and help but gotten nothing more than "its on the online materials". I dont know what to do.

Level 1 to 2 - English Language

Hi, I’ve just completed my CertHE English Language (L101, L161 & L185) and have registered to begin level 2 (L201) in October. I am curious as to how the academic step up will be from level 1 to 2. I don’t have much confidence in my own abilities, despite doing relatively well so far! Any thoughts welcome regarding how much more difficult it is at level 2? Thanks.

Younger students

I just read a comment from someone (on another sub) saying going to the OU as a younger student who has completed A levels different. That it’s designed for mature students who have experience under their belt and are looking for a career change. That recruiters will look down at a younger student with an OU degree? To what degree is this true (if at all)?

Registration

I have completed stage one of the registration for the psychology degree, but I have realised that I no longer want to enrol on this course. I have received an email including my StudentHome username and password. Am I able to ignore this and the rest of the registration application without any consequences? I have attached a photo of the stage of the registration that I have completed.

Student Finance Deferring a module - student finance loan

England

I am a second year law student looking to resit a module. Can anyone advise on what happens when you request to defer a module? Mine is paid by student finance. Will student finance cover a module resit? Will OU issue a refund? Will the new module roll over assignment results or would I start afresh?

SAAS Funding / Open University: Does my "Home Student" status activating in mid-October ruin an October intake?

I'm 19, living in Scotland, and planning to enroll in the Open University (BSc Mathematics and Physics) using the SAAS Part-Time Fee Grant to cover my tuition.

I want to start in the upcoming October intake, but I have a very specific timeline issue regarding my residency status. My official "Home Student" status activates exactly on October 14th.

I know SAAS uses a "Relevant Date" to determine residency eligibility. From what I’ve read, the relevant date for autumn courses (August - December starts) is usually August 1st.

My questions:

  1. Because my Home Student status doesn't officially tick over until October 14th, will SAAS automatically reject my funding for the October OU start since I technically didn't have the status on August 1st?
  2. Has anyone been in a similar situation where their status activated right around the start date? Do they make exceptions, or is it a hard cutoff?
  3. If October is off the table for SAAS funding, is my best move to just hold off and register for the February intake instead (since the relevant date for that would be January 1st, meaning I'd be fully cleared)?

I want to make sure I don't get trapped with international fees. Any advice or experiences with SAAS and exact dates would be massively appreciated. Thanks.

Finish all TMAs within 2months?

Hello, I’m about to enrol and want to find out if the TMAs are released early. And hypothetically if I find the material easier, could I finish the entire module say within a few weeks/months instead of the full 6 months?

I’m looking at the Math / Physics courses/degrees.

Slow response from SST

Hi, just looking for a bit of advice. I reached out to my SST (WELS) 3 weeks ago today about changing the qualification I’m working towards and have yet to receive a response. I’d really like to enrol on my next module and apply for student finance so that it’s out of the way, but I can’t do that until they approve me changing my qualification.

Has anyone else had this problem? Should I send another email or just keep waiting? I know that I could call, but I’d like to avoid that if possible. Thank you in advance!

Late EMA submission due to file size error

Okay, so I have just gone to submit my EMaA but was met with an error several times saying ZIP file was too large.

I have therefore submitted past the deadline by 9 seconds, in the panic I only submitted one part of the assignment.

9 minutes after the deadline I have managed to reduce the file size and resubmit, but of course it is late.

I know that on an EMA if you submit within 24 hours of the deadline they will mark it but give you a penalty of 10%

I will reluctantly accept the penalty as it is my own fault for submitting so close to the deadline.

My question is, will they mark my resubmission which has all the parts to my assignment which is submitted 9 mins after the deadline or will they only accept the first one which was still late but missing the majority of the assignment?

Thank you in advance.

NI resident fees

Has anyone moved from England to NI and enrolled with the Open University? I’m wondering if relocating allows you to qualify for the NI resident fees or if you need to have been a resident for a few years. My partner lives in NI, and I'm thinking of moving over to live with them, and I've been considering the OU; it would be a bonus if I could get it at a different rate.

Credit transfer illustration to psychology

I have just sent off my application to transfer credits from previous study. I have 180 credits from BA (Hons) Illustration from 2014 and am looking to study Psychology with counselling. I know it’s just a wait and see situation but I was hoping to hear what anyone with experience in this thinks about the likelihood I’ll be awarded a transfer!!

If it’s of any impact I’m also studying an access to HE in behavioural science right now and it looks like I’ll come out with distinctions

Should I switch? Any advice welcome....

Hi all, I am looking for some advice. I have currently just finished stage 2 of Combined STEM course and have mainly been focused on engineering, some robotics and IT, as well as electronics and remote experiments in physics and space.....i have also picked my module for October, T317 which sounds good.....however, I have been working in the engineering industry, and havent been enjoying it, and want to pivot into medical illustration. I already have a fine art degree, and am wondering whether I should continue with this path? Or switch to something more medical? I have done lots of research into this and spoken with a career guidance lady through the open uni, and she couldn't suggest either way if i should switch modules?

This is something I really want to do, but don't want to waste this degree I am doing currently? Hope all this makes sense. I have always been very flighty with careers and nothing has ever stuck for whatever reason. But looking into medical illustration this seems like something I would really enjoy. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, many thanks
