every commercial from that ep was so fucking funny

78

u/QuellSpeller Dec 06 '16

I'm torn between this and the Swisher commercial for the best in the episode.

36

u/Feral-rage Dec 06 '16

I watched that episode half a dozen times and was conflicted every time a new commercial came on during each viewing. At this point, it's a toss-up between the simple brilliance of this Arizona commercial, and the lengthier Mickey's commercial. Mickey's Malt Liquor. You're drinking it wrong.

Oh geezus how is every video in this thread bootleg???

This ain't an episode of Atlanta!!!

u/JulioCesarSalad Dec 06 '16

Idgi

1

u/Sombrero365 Dec 06 '16

It's a forty, which are notoriously really cheap, and I not something you'd have at a classy event like on the video.

The joke is that the maker of the forty is trying to tap into an upper class market. This is compounded by the fact that it's a plastic bottle, whish is usually reserved for the shittiest of fortys.

1

u/SirToastymuffin Dec 06 '16

I'm confused what's funny about this commercial? I feel like I must have missed something...

1

u/NotMrRothstein Dec 06 '16

Which one?

1

u/SirToastymuffin Dec 06 '16

The one posted, about Arizona tea.

5

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '16

Wait so you work for Coca Cola, and... In the mall?

..Yes. That's correct.

6

u/Feral-rage Dec 06 '16

"What IPA do you have on tap?"

3

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '16

Dodge Charger: Keep it in the divorce

2

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '16

The whole ep was hilarious

2

u/Lington Dec 06 '16

It was the strangest episode I've seen of a show and I loved it

1

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '16

What's the source?

1

u/QuellSpeller Dec 06 '16

Atlanta S01E07, B.A.N. It's worth watching even if you haven't seen the show, all you need to know is contained in the episode.

329

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '16

Wow, I have never seen an Arizona commercial, I thought they didn't do advertising and that was part of why it's always $.99?

579

u/QuellSpeller Dec 06 '16 edited Dec 06 '16

That's not a real commercial, it's from the show Atlanta. The episode is B.A.N., and it and the rest of the show are amazing. Worth checking out.

4

u/antsugi Dec 06 '16

What streaming service is fx on?

12

u/Kalisz96 Dec 06 '16

They have their own and it's free as long as you have cable

3

u/GODZiGGA Dec 06 '16

Commercial free, Hulu level of commercials, or basic cable levels of commercials?

4

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '16

Free as in "you need to be a cable subscriber to watch first" free is a big one for me

5

u/QuellSpeller Dec 06 '16

I'm not really sure, they may have it on the FX website if you have a cable subscription. I ended up needing to watch it through less than legitimate channels.

0

u/GRWAFGOI Dec 06 '16

its called... "the internet" maybe you've heard of it?

but for real... the first link on that search took me to every episode of season 1 streaming...

13

u/The-Fox-Says Dec 06 '16

Which episodes are supposed to be amazing? I keep hearing good things about that show but I watched the first 3 or 4 episodes of season one and it was just meh.

133

u/QuellSpeller Dec 06 '16

I really enjoyed the whole show. If you got that far in it may just not be for you.

20

u/Mardak5150 Dec 06 '16

You're totally right. If you're not dying at episode two when the guy and his "girlfriend" are reunited in jail then the show is definitely not for you.

Nice mtg name btw.

2

u/GRWAFGOI Dec 06 '16

that shit was fucking hilarious.

"SO YOU THINK I'M GAY?"

"sexuality is a spectrum you can really do whatever you want"

that scene was simultaneously super sad and had me rolling on the floor laughing.

donald glover being awkward between them really sold it.

23

u/Aybuddeh Dec 06 '16

It may not be their cup of tea.

14

u/130tucker Dec 06 '16

*Can of tea

-10

u/xpantsx Dec 06 '16

You tried.

7

u/gbsolo12 Dec 06 '16

You didn't

28

u/Stalked_Like_Corn Dec 06 '16

The last few were the best but if you're not into this show in the first 3 or 4, you're like 1/3 of the way through the season. I think B.A.N. was like episode 7. It's pretty hilarious.

10

u/HowWouldYouKillMe Dec 06 '16

The episode called B.A.N. has little main story and is mostly filled with silly skits and stuff, it feels like actually watching tv and is pretty funny, especially the car commercials. If you didn't like the show you might like that episode.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '16

I admit it took me a few "commercials" before i realized what was happening.

6

u/NSFForceDistance Dec 06 '16

yeah, if you got that far it may just not be your thing BUT I'd still recommend checking out the episode BAN cuz it's a very different feel than the rest of the show and very funny on its own

1

u/The-Fox-Says Dec 06 '16

I'll check it out, thanks!

1

u/stonedkayaker Dec 06 '16

That episode had a very Chappelle Show feel to it - it was great.

6

u/A_Sinclaire Dec 06 '16

I have given up on trusting Reddit when it comes to comedic stuff - maybe my taste is just too different... but I constantly see people praising things like Trailer Park Boys or Wet Hot American Summer etc... and I watched 1-2 episodes of each and it was just terrible :-/

1

u/Max_Apogee Dec 06 '16

I personally love WHAS, but I would agree that TPB seemed like absolute unfunny horseshit. For some reason I can stand Comedy Bang Bang! either. It seems like they're trying to do Tim and Eric kind of humor and just failing miserably.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '16

Episode 7. I thought the rest was just ok but Paper Boy on the talk show is fucking hilarious.

1

u/GRWAFGOI Dec 06 '16

the rest was just ok?

excuse me, that trans racial piece had me dying

"Why am I not getting the respect I deserve? and that's when it hit me.

I'm white, and 35"

when he's talking to himself in the mirror rehearsing white phrases I fucking lost it.

"Excuse me, what IPA do you have on tap?"

"Did you see game of throne's last night?"

1

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '16

I mean the rest of the series was just ok. The episode with Paper Boy on the talk show is hilarious.

Identifying as a 35 year old white man had me in tears as well.

I'd actually gave up on the show after episode 5 or 6 (the one with two women eating dinner. It was utter shite) but my mate convinced me to watch that particular episode, which redeemed the entire thing.

1

u/GRWAFGOI Dec 06 '16

if you don't like it by the 4th episode you probably won't.

the show isn't for everyone. but it is a very well done show. I find it makes some white people uncomfortable, especially that thing about the N word in the 1st episode.

1

u/SuicideBonger Dec 06 '16

I think this just convinced me to finally check the show out.

108

u/Crusader1089 Dec 06 '16

It's from the TV show Atlanta on FX. They have fake commercials in them for comedy. This one is for Arizona Ice Tea.

2

u/AnEpiphanyTooLate Dec 06 '16

Next question. Why was that funny?

4

u/Crusader1089 Dec 06 '16

Well most humour derives from tension release, the unexpected or the absurd. In this case I would suggest it is the unexpected: you don't expect the clerk at the counter to be as confused as the customer as to why the store is marking up the price on the can. Its not really a laugh out loud kind of humour, more a dry observational sort of humour.

Comedy is of course subjective, so if you don't find it funny it doesn't matter.

1

u/littlebrwnrobot Dec 06 '16

hey you're that tea loving guy I have tagged as Uncle Iroh

2

u/Crusader1089 Dec 06 '16

I do indeed love tea. I prefer it hot though.

2

u/GRWAFGOI Dec 06 '16

damn... I don't think anyone lives up to the Dragon of the West

1

u/str8_ched Dec 06 '16

I was wondering because "the price is on the can though" doesn't sound like a great slogan.

Also, even if they don't do advertising, would they not have to pay the to be one of the "joke" advertisements within the show?

1

u/Crusader1089 Dec 06 '16

No, I don't think they would have. If anything the producers of Atlanta might have paid to use Arizona Ice Tea's trademarks (although they would not have to under the parody provision in fair use law, but it is the easiest way to avoid being sued). The TV show had a parody of CNN and other TV news stations and whenever they cut to a commercial break on the parody TV station they'd show the parody adverts. Why they chose to parody Arizona Ice Tea, who can say. Possibly just because it is never advertised.

2

u/astronao Dec 06 '16

The founder of the teas vowed to never up the price no matter what happens. Like a motto or something

1

u/neoseed Dec 06 '16

I just noticed the commercial is called Airzona

1

u/graaahh Dec 06 '16

Only the YouTube video is called that, it doesn't say that in the commercial.

57

u/okaysian Dec 06 '16

u/[deleted] Dec 07 '16

You should watch the whole episode of Atlanta. The setup was a local TV show where one of the characters was getting interviewed and they had real fake commercials (fake commercials for real products). The Arizona one was just commenting on how it rings up for more than $0.99 even though the price is on the can.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 07 '16

[deleted]

2

u/[deleted] Dec 07 '16

Yes. That is the joke.

4

u/Hiphop-Marketing Dec 06 '16

I've seen Arizona Ice teas with no price on the can. They make those for this exact reason--- so the store can charge what they want.

6

u/Chempy Dec 06 '16

That's when you go to another store that just charges 99 cents + tax

3

u/DlaFunkee Dec 06 '16

Came here for this

31

u/HowwNowBrownCoww Dec 06 '16

Came here to post this. Good on ya.

6

u/Dr-Haus Dec 06 '16

Same. Disappointed I had to scroll down this far

3

u/FLIPCICAN6 Dec 06 '16

I scrolled through all of the comments just to find this specific comment

2

u/GRWAFGOI Dec 06 '16

this is what I was looking for.

why is it so far down?

2

u/ijohnperez Dec 06 '16

Was hoping someone made this joke!

2

u/thebigslide Dec 06 '16

Cans for the Canadian market actually don't have the price on the can.

2

u/Could-Have-Been-King Dec 06 '16 edited Dec 06 '16

They do, though.

EDIT: price on the can (en français aussi) bought just now in Kingston.

0

u/thebigslide Dec 06 '16

Those are cans for the US market that have been imported for resale in Canada. There are also other cans specifically for the Canadian market with a different design. I don't really like the stuff, but I'll see if I can get a picture today if I hit the store. Big storm in Winnipeg so not sure if I feel like going out.

2

u/Could-Have-Been-King Dec 06 '16

Just now in Kingston Ontario. I'm pretty sure the French on the can means it's made for Canadian markets. Maybe Winnipeg just sucks?

1

u/derrtay Dec 06 '16

Do it for the sweet karma

1

u/TStru Dec 06 '16

They totally do. If you're lucky you can even find convenience stores that still only charge 99c.

u/thebigslide Dec 06 '16

100% credit to Donald Glover for a smart, funny, skit.
