City Life Flag burned downtown

Hey, it's me again.

This happened to us last night at around 9:30PM. We are on the 400 block of N. Queen St. across from Decades. We will be filing a police report. If anyone has any additional information, it would be much appreciated.

City Life What do we think should be done with this building (59 N Queen St.)

Personally, I think an urban grocery store (like an ALDI or a public-private partnership) would be great for downtown. It would allow people to live easier in the area and address a food desert in downtown.

City Life Curious what people thought about the article regarding motorcycle noise yesterday

I've had this post in various ways deleted but here's the gist of some of the main points:

  • Pennsylvania law caps motorcycle noise at 82 to 88 decibels depending on the type of bike and its speed. [I looked up the limit for cars and it's actually a little higher, 88 - 92. For comparison, 100db is a jackhammer or chainsaw.]
  • The "loud pipes save lives" argument is the go-to defense from bikers.(No one from the motorcycle clubs the reporter contacted offered a comment).
  • The biggest policy response to this issue is currently working its way through the Pennsylvania legislature in the form of the SLEEP Act, (Stop Loud and Excessive Exhaust Pollution.) The bill would make it illegal to sell or install noise-amplifying exhaust modifications, with penalties of up to $1,000 and 30 days in jail, and would also penalize inspection stations that repeatedly fail to flag noncompliant exhaust systems.
  • It has bipartisan support. In Lancaster County, the sole supporter is Rep. Steven Mentzer, whose office gets a lot of complaints from residents in both Lititz and Lampeter.
  • Last part of the article was about how to file a noise complaint with the local police department since recurring problems could prompt police to post an officer at a specific location during particular timeframes. For non-emergency complaints in Lancaster County, the number to call is 717-664-1180.

City Life Cars ruining our city

Driver struck the gate to St Mary’s Cemetery at New Holland and Plum. Unfortunately all too common. The city has come a long way in helping to stop this bad driver behavior but still a long way to go.

City Life King and Orange street under consideration for two-way traffic

https://lancasteronline.com/news/local/lancaster-city-to-give-updates-on-two-way-traffic-study-next-week/article_713ccfbc-b931-4530-bcfc-dcd15d4d7667.html

Returning some one-way downtown thoroughfares to two-way traffic will be among the topics at a pair of open houses hosted by Lancaster city’s Department of Public Works next week.

The events on the city’s Vision Zero traffic safety initiative are scheduled to take place 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at Lancaster Public Library, 151 N. Queen St.

The drop-in sessions will also highlight safety projects on Franklin Street near Wickersham Elementary and J.P. McCaskey High School, and on Conestoga and Farnum streets near Carter & MacRae Elementary Schools.

Concept plans for the restoration of two-way traffic to Orange and King streets will be on display for resident feedback. An ongoing study has determined that the two streets running east-west through the city are the most feasible for converting from one-way traffic. The study also looked at north-south corridors like Queen and Duke streets, but determined that converting them to two-way traffic would have impacted traffic and parking, according to Cindy McCormick, deputy director/city engineer for the Department of Public Works.

“It would be harder to keep traffic from becoming too congested if the north-south corridors were included,” she said.

The two-way restoration study originally considered nine streets with an above-average number of crashes, all of which once had two-way traffic before they were converted in the early- and mid-20th century.

The department says the change back to two-way traffic would increase visibility for pedestrians crossing the street as well as reduce vehicle emissions and conflicts with pedestrians from cars having to circle the block.

Based on focus groups held last year, drivers prefer the current layout for its traffic flow, while walkers and bikers say it encourages speeding and makes it less friendly to those not in cars.

More public outreach on the two-way restoration study will take place through the end of next month, and a final report is due this summer.

City Life Just moved here

And was wondering if the obnoxiously loud, horrible exhausts (seriously are some of you just straight piping it??), and incessant revving have always been this bad because HOLY it’s unbearable. I’m talking “wake me up at 3am” bad by a lone rider. Rolling down Queen with a dirt bike that’ll leave my ears ringing. Harley riders straight outta South Park. Cars needlessly revving at a stop in traffic. Sport bikers have been great so far though 👍🏼

Moved from a major city and was not expecting this noise level lmao 🥲😭😭

City Life Anyone have consistent issues with GloFiber?

I was really excited to switch. I work from home some days and my roommate is fully remote. We are constantly getting dropped from our meetings. Is there troubleshooting I should be doing on my end? It’s to the point that I am considering switching back, but I hate Xfinity.

Edit: In summary, some people have had 0 issues and others have had the same problem that magically went away. When it’s running, it’s damn good.

After I posted, the whole service went down. Customer support answered quickly, but only has a tech to send tomorrow between 3-5pm. So I’ll be without internet for a full day.

City Life Regular Commute to Philly?

I've got a prospective job that would require me to commute to center city Philly 4 days a week. I live in York. I've told them I'm open to the prospect of this travel, because it looks like it could be a really solid opportunity... but the more I think about it the more questions I have about how sustainable this actually would be. I don't want to set myself up for failure.

My thought is that it MIGHT be sustainable if I take the AMTRAK from Lancaster to Philly and make my way to the office from there, either by walking or SEPTA from the train station.

I have questions for anyone who may already do something similar to this.

How full does the train tend to be and does it get loud? Is it better to go early or mid-morning? What's the cost of parking at the station and do they offer monthly passes? Are the trains usually pretty laid back, etc. Stuff like that. I honestly don't know everything that I should be taking into consideration but those things are off the top of my head.

I'm trying to both figure out the math behind what is most monetarily economical, but also be economical with my time. (Also, if I can accomplish some work on the train because that atmosphere is accommodating, then I may be able to work that into a discussion with my prospective employer to shave down some of the in-office hours a little bit.)

I'm not sure if this job would be worth it or not but maybe with some of this perspective I'll be able to have a clearer picture. I do know that driving to Philly 4 days a week seems unreasonable. Traffic and parking aren't amazing, and the last time I made this trip by car it was 2-3 hours one way, where taking the train should shave it down to just under 2 hours.

Anyway any insights are appreciated.

This is why we can’t have nice things. Thanks, jerk, for stealing all the trinkets out of the locker. You suck.

Hopefully a lock with a passcode helps with this issue.

City Life My neighbors trash wasn’t picked up and the crew was screaming…

So I was sitting in my living room and the trash crew came through. There’s still plenty of snow and our houses don’t look very different than anyone else’s. But they started freaking out and screaming, “how the fuck am I supposed to get this trash can over four fucking feet of snow?” Now, I’m one building off the corner and my neighbors are two. It doesn’t seem terribly difficult to walk it around if I’m the crew. And it’s not like we could’ve left them on the street for easier pickup.

My question is, should we have done something differently? They took my trash. Which was 8 feet away from my neighbors trash. I just don’t understand.

City Life Southern Lancaster Safety

I've been living in Hempfield since 2023, but I'm finally looking to buy a house. It seems like the only place with affordable houses is southern downtown Lancaster (S Prince, S Queen). In my time living here, Lancaster City has always seemed overwhelmingly safe compared to other places I'm familiar with (Chambersburg, Harrisburg, Hagerstown). When I mentioned to my girlfriend's parents that I'm looking in that area, they seemed a little worried. I'm not concerned for myself, but I do want to make sure she feels 100% safe there. For anyone who actually lives in the city, is it actually unsafe? Every time I'm in that area, it seems completely fine.

City Life Anyone had to deal with Code Enforcement before?

I have a neighbor, a renter, who's been a problem for months now. They're suffering from some severe alcoholism and not seeking treatment. They spend their nights out on the porch, over the past winter mind you, drinking beer and yelling into his phone (I dont think he recognizes the other person can hear him fine). Things have gotten worse, however, as I've recorded two instances of them urinating in the street, onto cars parked in front of their rental.

The cops show up and tell them to go inside and keep it down. The piss isn't being addressed, so I am looking into contacting the department of Code Enforcement in the city, specifically the Bureau of Property Rentals and Housing Inspections. Has anyone gone through making a complaint with them before, and if so how did it go?

edit for more info: the property manager had stopped answering my calls and texts back in November.
