KCL PPE vs Georgetown SFS International Economics

Hi everyone,

I've currently firmed LSE for PPE, but I'm starting to think through what I'd do if I ended up missing my offer. My insurance is King's College London for PPE, but I also have an offer from Georgetown SFS to study International Economics. For context, as an international student in the US, I'd need a STEM-designated degree for visa reasons, which is why I'd be doing International Economics at Georgetown rather than something more directly political.

I'm finding it surprisingly difficult to decide which I'd choose if the situation arose, so I'd really appreciate some outside perspectives. Cost isn’t really a decisive factor, although King’s would be substantially cheaper.

King's College London PPE

Pros

  • Still allows me to study PPE, which is probably my ideal subject combination.
  • Located in London, which is arguably one of the best cities in the world for politics, economics, and public policy
  • Much closer to family and my existing support network.
  • Significantly easier and cheaper for family to visit.
  • As someone who's fairly introverted, having a stronger support system nearby is a major advantage.
  • Strong reputation in politics, philosophy and public policy.
  • Potentially easier transition overall.
  • I could realistically see myself staying in the UK long term if I enjoy my experience there.

Cons

  • Doesn't have the same global reputation in international affairs as Georgetown SFS.
  • Less specialised in international affairs compared to SFS.
  • Less prestige.

Georgetown SFS International Economics

Pros

  • Located in Washington DC
  • Very strong alumni network.
  • International Economics is STEM-designated, which would be useful from a visa/work perspective.
  • Strong opportunities for internships during term time.
  • Study abroad opportunities in London.

Cons

  • Much further from family and my support network.
  • I'd effectively be starting from scratch socially.
  • I'd be studying International Economics rather than PPE or International Political Economy, which is arguably a slightly less ideal academic fit for me.
  • I honestly don't currently see myself settling in the US permanently, whereas I could potentially see myself staying in the UK long term depending on how I find living and working there.
  • The distance and adjustment process feel quite daunting.

At the moment I'm leaning slightly toward King's because of the support network factor, but part of me worries I'd regret turning down Georgetown SFS if I had the opportunity. For people familiar with either institution (or both), which would you choose and why?

Question Psychology at KCL

Hi everyone,

I’m a neurodivergent international student who got an offer to study undergrad psychology at KCL and the University of Bath. I struggle a lot with math and while science does truly fascinate me I find studying it very overwhelming. From what I’ve heard, Bath would overall be the better choice for me but I’d still appreciate any sort of input from current psychology students about the course itself and the pros and cons. Also, I plan on getting a masters in psychotherapy at Edinburgh, KCL, or Manchester. Is anyone able to tell me whether I’d still have a good chance (if I do good at uni) at getting into those universities if I attended bath instead?

Undergraduate switch from llb to ppl

llb offer holder here, heard back and firmed my ucas choices quite late down the line so by the time I made up my mind to actually go to kcl + decided on doing PPL instead was also quite a late decision.

I’ve contacted the school via kings apply and they said that the course is closed and they can’t accommodate this switch. Would I be successful if I ring them up on results day? Walking into PPL from day one would probably be most ideal for me rather than starting LLB and doing an internal transfer

Undergraduate English proficiency - Qualification Check

I'm a little confused about what I'm supposed to upload on Qualification Check, especially since it's saying ALL verifications - does that include my IB results? Do I wait until I get my IB results to upload both, my IELTS and IB results? Or is this only with regards to English proficiency?

Question Bsc Econ, kcl or Warwick?

I was wondering which university is better in terms of future prospects. As in where would I be able to find better networking, job opportunities, internships and just overall academic and career advantages?
And also, would living in Coventry and the Warwick campus be a bit depressing compared to king’s college London? I prefer having a college life outside of just studies, so I am a bit worried about choosing a uni which may not be in the city.
From what I researched Warwick seemed to be a better option academically for economics, however I worry that I might miss out on the opportunities that come with living in London (internships, networking and the location of kcl which seems to be gorgeous).

So just wanted to gather more opinions to figure out which uni to pick.

(Edit: interested to get into investment banking or something similar in the future)

KCL flexibility if offer is missed (EE and Maths)?

Posting for a friend.

They already achieved A\* in A-Level Maths last year. Sitting Further Maths and Physics this year (predicted A*A*).

  • Firm: BEng Electronic Engineering (AA)
  • Insurance: BSc Mathematics (AA)

If they get A*BB overall on results day, how likely is KCL to still accept them for either course?

Non-contextual applicant btw. Any experiences appreciated !!!

Accommodation King's accommodation

Hi there, I just firmed my offer for kings yesterday and have tried to log onto the accommodation portal. To my understanding, they have said you are guaranteed accommodation if you apply by 3rd June.

Of course I have left it a bit late, but that is just because it was a difficult decision for me to choose where to firm/insure.

However, when I go onto the residences portal, it gives me the following error:

The only reason that is possible for me seems to be the 3rd, but how I am supposed to book accommodation if it is not giving me access and the guaranteed deadline is in 2 days?

Difference in Diploma and Transcript in CISCE?

On qualification check, there are separate columns for diploma and transcript but as a CISCE student, I have only a certificate which says “Pass certificate” and on it are my scores. There is no different diploma as such. I submitted my transcript on both and CISCE replied that I need to submit the correct document. However I’m confused as to what they are asking specifically. If anyone is aware in exactly which diploma or transcript they are referring to,
Please help.

How to complete qualification check as a CISCE student

I have submitted my document on qualification check, however I received a message from Kings that I need to upload my IELTS score too but I see no section for English proficiency test.

Even though I uploaded it on “add document” CISCE commented that I need to remove it as they cannot verify it. I have emailed to both the institutions however there is still no clarify. What do I do?

[Academic] Adverse Childhood Experiences and Body Image Concerns in Sexual Minority Men

Post image
0 Upvotes

I am looking for people of sexual minority men (i.e. anyone who identifies as male), aged 16 and over, for an online study on sexuality, adverse childhood experiences, and body image concerns for my PhD project. It is an online survey that will take around 25 minutes. You are under no obligation to reply to this advertisement or the online survey. However, if you choose to, participation is voluntary, and you may withdraw at any time. Due to the nature of the study which asks you to disclose childhood maltreatment you may have experienced and/or threats you experienced, the research team will not be able to act on these disclosures or report these. If you are interested in participating, please complete the survey here: https://qualtrics.kcl.ac.uk/jfe/form/SV_80KgUqcaCIshBQO

Hello,

If any US students have gotten into the IFP, what were your grades?

Is the minimum requirement usually enough to get in?

I'll be taking the SAT and AP Courses, just wanted to know about what other American student's experience was like.

Thanks in Advance!
