Do you like Johnny Bravo?
I recently binged Johnny Bravo completely and decided to explore people's opinions on him, and I was really impressed that everyone either hates Johnny or only likes him as a critique of men with toxic masculinity.
I mean, all the opinions I've seen here end up portraying Johnny as a superficial, genuinely evil guy who only thinks about himself and getting women.
But when we stop to analyze:
- He is completely devoted to his "mama." He does everything for her, obeys her advice, and treats her like the most important person in the world.
- He is very patient and protective of little Suzie. Even when he's annoyed by her antics, he always ends up participating in her tea parties or helping her with her problems.
- He never holds a grudge. Even when he's beaten, rejected, or humiliated in practically every episode, he wakes up the next day with his self-esteem intact and ready to try again.
- His sexist attitudes stem from pure ignorance and lack of awareness (He is LITERALLY too stupid to understand his actions), not cruelty. He genuinely believes he is complimenting women and never intentionally tries to hurt them.
(Even realizing she's a wild animal, Johnny maintains his "gentlemanly spirit" (in his own way). He doesn't leave. They have dinner together, he offers her a block of mineral salt as a gift and treats her like an ordinary woman, completely ignoring the absurdity of the situation, and even after going to jail at the end of the episode, at no point does he blame her or seem angry with her.)
- In several episodes, he uses his physical strength to defend his friends, his mother, or even strangers from bullies or real monsters.
He really makes MANY mistakes, especially with women, but it's never truly intentional.
