White residue on goretex jacket

I am looking to buy a wet weather goretex jacket which looks in good condition, but i am feeling nervous about the white buildup in some places. Is this indicative of material failure or just dirty or needs retreatment? Any thoughts are appreciated.

How much are you thinking about spending on it? Im sure it will work well enough you dont need to be 100% dry, but you might be able to get a new budget jacket that has more life in it for relatively cheap.

Holy shit!!! Do not buy that! You can get a very nice brand new jacket for that.

I thought you were on a tight budget looking at used. You can get a brand new Patagonia Torrentshell for a few bucks more than that. Its a very high quality tried and true jacket. There are many good options in the $100 range like the Marmot Precip if you want to go more budget friendly.

I'd kinda prefer to buy used than a brand new piece. Thanks for the input

You do you. Just make sure you do some pricing research, that jacket looks very worn for $170

Yeah... Wild take for the product and the price.

Buyng used is a wild take? Weird of you. Just because OP isn't knowledgeable about pricing, doesn't mean you can put them down for choosing not to buy into consumerism.

You clearly don't understand my point. Noting that there are some concerns about said product, and for the price point it is for sale. Yes, it is a wild take. Why are you being so sensitive.

They're talking about the price. Calm yourself down...

Thats fine. Reducing footprint and all that. Buy anything else used besides this one. In fact, I can sell you my almost new patagonia Granite crest for 200 if you want.

I agree the price is a little steep. Dunno if no-name Amazon junk is the answer though.

While there is absolute trash on Amazon. You’d also be amazed at the quality of a lot of Amazon outdoor brands

Without photos it's hard to tell, but white residue can be anything from detergent buildup to the beginning of laminate failure.

For a used Gore Tex jacket, I'd be more worried about delamination than dirt. If the price isn't a steal, I'd keep looking. Wet weather gear is one thing I don't like gambling on.
