I had not thought about how the breathing is calming so thanks for that insight!

In precision target shooting, from a bench or the sort that's an olympic sport, you have to be perfectly still. Your breath is slow and steady, your heart rate consistent, your hand unmoving. You fire when you are sure that you will hit the center ring. It's a very slow and very intentional thing.

It would sound weird to most people to say that shooting can be a form of meditation but practitioners of japanese archery, Kyūdō, often associate it with zen buddhism. So sitting there, waiting for your heart to slow and the wind to be perfect, holding your breath in the last few moments... It can be very calming and help increase your patience. I don't ascribe any mystical or philosophical element to it personally, but I've heard others call it meditative and I understand what they mean by it.
