I agree that there were some problems with the tone, especially the scene where Izumi confesses (or rather, fail to confess properly). But I think it works well in the flow of the episode : it shows how they couldn't properly talk to each other and were only getting more confused (leading to a literally "ridiculous" situation).
To solve it, they had to take a break, start trying to think and understand each other's feelings, which was the point of Milo's game. Once they did so, they could finally put their true feelings into words and solve their problems.
