It's one thing to be unpredictable and subvert expectations, but to do so in a way that you don't really see coming AND still makes coherent sense when you think about it.

Isayama is a master of distraction and misdirection, the way he sets things up before turning around and stabbing you in the heart... It's beautiful.

You nailed it. Beautiful. I found myself saying aloud "this is art" after watching this episode. The storytelling. The visuals, and above all, the way it's connected to real themes of the human condition and life itself. Yes, it's cool with the fighting and flying about but I cried hearing Eren and Armin go back and forth about their dream of seeing the ocean and about courage. There's so much to draw from this Anime. Amazing.

The armored/colossal titan reveal scene has to be one of the most memorable for me. Even though I got spoiled from the beginning of their identity, that reveal legit left me confused and asking, "did he really just say that?"

Edit: replied to wrong comment lol

That's still my favorite part of the show and manga. It's handled the same. In the anime you barely hear it as others are walking away. In the manga, it's through tiny speech bubbles while the panel is focusing on something else. It's such a huge moment and you're left going..."wait, what...what!?" in such an effective way. Keeping it a small moment made it this huge shock. Like we were there on the wall with them. Many other anime would have made that a huge, music swelling, "You thought!", moment. But it was intimate. And beautiful.

Just like this episode. Eren defeating CT. It was beautiful. No music. Muted noise. Just this intimate moment where everything is coming together.

Gods this is so fucking good.

I truly grateful that after episode 1 I decided to drop the manga and become an anime watcher only. Truly a masterpiece experiencing the whole thing in anime format!

There's so many people here that would crucify you for that comment, but not me. I agree. As an Anime only, it's breathtaking seeing everything together with dialogue and moving parts.

This Anime will be the one we tell our kids about. The anime they have to watch before calling themselves a fan of the genre.

Lol, but in all honesty, experiencing something with the great animation, well done voice acting, beautiful music is much better than reading it (coming from someone who reads lots of manga)

As a Game of Thrones viewer, my migraine just popped. Sigh.

Yep, subverting expectations works best when it's the logical outcome of a situation. Marlowe has that "Is this how I die?" moment, so we kind of expect some deus ex machina to save him because we've seen it so many times in various media. But no, there's a titan launching rocks at him so he dies.

That was one of the main reasons I loved AoT when it first came out. We made up lots of theories and noticed many details, we were later rewarded by seeing that those details were not thrown randomly but were intentional.
