Do you want to know what the brillance of this anime is? The fact that for us anime only watchers, it's unpredictable. I legit did not know what their strategy was going to be. I was with Bertholdt in my thinking that they had no course of action, and yet of course I knew that SOMETHING had to be up. I actually thought Eren fucked it up! Especially because of Armins' reaction. May Armin rest in peace. This anime never ceases to amaze me. I was crying and cheering, hollering and jumping for joy. What an amazing episode.

It's one thing to be unpredictable and subvert expectations, but to do so in a way that you don't really see coming AND still makes coherent sense when you think about it.

Isayama is a master of distraction and misdirection, the way he sets things up before turning around and stabbing you in the heart... It's beautiful.

You nailed it. Beautiful. I found myself saying aloud "this is art" after watching this episode. The storytelling. The visuals, and above all, the way it's connected to real themes of the human condition and life itself. Yes, it's cool with the fighting and flying about but I cried hearing Eren and Armin go back and forth about their dream of seeing the ocean and about courage. There's so much to draw from this Anime. Amazing.

The armored/colossal titan reveal scene has to be one of the most memorable for me. Even though I got spoiled from the beginning of their identity, that reveal legit left me confused and asking, "did he really just say that?"

Edit: replied to wrong comment lol

That's still my favorite part of the show and manga. It's handled the same. In the anime you barely hear it as others are walking away. In the manga, it's through tiny speech bubbles while the panel is focusing on something else. It's such a huge moment and you're left going..."wait, what...what!?" in such an effective way. Keeping it a small moment made it this huge shock. Like we were there on the wall with them. Many other anime would have made that a huge, music swelling, "You thought!", moment. But it was intimate. And beautiful.

Just like this episode. Eren defeating CT. It was beautiful. No music. Muted noise. Just this intimate moment where everything is coming together.

Gods this is so fucking good.

I truly grateful that after episode 1 I decided to drop the manga and become an anime watcher only. Truly a masterpiece experiencing the whole thing in anime format!

There's so many people here that would crucify you for that comment, but not me. I agree. As an Anime only, it's breathtaking seeing everything together with dialogue and moving parts.

This Anime will be the one we tell our kids about. The anime they have to watch before calling themselves a fan of the genre.

Lol, but in all honesty, experiencing something with the great animation, well done voice acting, beautiful music is much better than reading it (coming from someone who reads lots of manga)

As a Game of Thrones viewer, my migraine just popped. Sigh.

Yep, subverting expectations works best when it's the logical outcome of a situation. Marlowe has that "Is this how I die?" moment, so we kind of expect some deus ex machina to save him because we've seen it so many times in various media. But no, there's a titan launching rocks at him so he dies.

u/killingspeerx Jul 25 '19

That was one of the main reasons I loved AoT when it first came out. We made up lots of theories and noticed many details, we were later rewarded by seeing that those details were not thrown randomly but were intentional.

unpredictable

Same feelings when I was reading this arc in the manga. I was just surprised amazed and I even cried when Eren said "You were always the bravest of us all".

Actually not just this arc of course

11

u/hoeinheim77 May 27 '19

Friend, I also cried at that part. There is something otherworldly and powerful when you observe the heart of someone who is willing to lay down their life for their friends, for humanity. Armin, and all the other soldiers who Erwin mentioned last episode, are heroes. Not super heroes, heroes.

8

u/benjadolf May 27 '19

I had to stop and go for a long walk once I read this chapter and the one before it together. It was a bit too much for me to handle.

6

u/[deleted] May 27 '19

I thought you always knew you were the bravest of us all

This is my favourite line in the entire manga, I'm so glad it landed in the anime

3

u/bot_yea May 27 '19

Yeah, it's so memorable to me.

15

u/vyxxer May 27 '19

I was so blown away when this happened in manga. "ARMMIN? ERWIN?! NO ONE IS SAFE!"

13

u/[deleted] May 27 '19

I thought I was one step ahead because there’s a moment where you can see Erens hardening spreading to his arm, I thought he was going to encase the colossal titan, I do like how it rewards the viewers for paying close attention

13

u/Android19samus May 27 '19

I knew that it was all part of the plan, but I had no goddamn idea what the plan was. It never occurred to me to get out of the damn titan

It's really a testament to the quality of the story telling. The tactics, the emotion, the discourse on the state of humanity, duty vs. dreams, sacrifice, love, passion, courage, valor.

Attack on Titan is a masterpiece. From the first episode, a masterpiece!

Hope IG or whoever takes over adapts it well. I really want to see the discussion thread for when CH 100 gets adapted. Happy your enjoying the story so far.

1

u/Konko_ May 27 '19

Wouldn't WIT studio continue adapting it???

9

u/North514 May 27 '19

No there have been rumors which seem likely that this is their last season. Sakugablog did a write about the situation.

Attack On Titan At Its WIT’s End

WIT right now is kinda over taxed they just finished the Iron Fortress film recently and have Vinland next season which is also going to be an intense adaption though different teams. Plus even though AOT is really popular from what I understand you get paid a flat rate so technically WIT could make the same amount of money from the Ancient Magus Bride as AOT despite the latter being vastly more popular. Most of the profits go to the production committee. Though I don't how much of that is true. They might want to pursue more anime original content where they can make more and expand as a studio.

It's been theorized IG might just take over as they are on the production committee and WIT is subsidized by them. This could mean some animators from WIT could be brought over to continue working on AOT but the directors definitely would be different. Should be an announcement about it probably after the season is over.

AOT still sells the second most in manga volumes only behind One Piece so it will get more adaptions likely. We got about two more arcs left so around 2 cour (maybe a film cause I think this arc with Isayama's comments could be the longest in AOT history meaning it might need a longer adaption) as the current arc is the final arc.

Well again for OPM the issue was pacing of the production which was hell. Considering the pace they were making that show I don't know if anyone could put out a good adaption in that time. (JC is seriously overworked) The one thing good that could come of this is that IG (or another studio like MAPPA ideally) might get and put AOT on a better production schedule. I like WIT studio due to the IP's they adapt and their talent but their production schedules are always hell its surprising they put out content as good as they do.

1

u/[deleted] May 27 '19

I'm just worried they will chance the actors and music. It's all so iconic; I don't want to hear this show without the cast and Sawano.

2

u/North514 May 27 '19

I never seen a case where switching studio ever led to a shift of cast (wouldn’t mind directing me to cases if that has happened) even if there are cases it would be rare. As for other areas I mean I like Sawano but I will be open minded if they decide to go with someone else again best time to do it consider the changes in the story.

To be honest this wouldn't be the first time eren would fuck up. Thankfully he didn't this time.

15

u/xRyozuo May 27 '19

Honestly Eren has grown so much I realised I don’t even dislike him anymore. Badass dude

22

u/JinHyunTen May 26 '19

Just so you know, the anime has yet to catch up with the best arc and the bests fights in SnK. For now SnK is great, but what is yet to come is what makes the story otherwordly.

24

u/hoeinheim77 May 27 '19

What is hype may never die! You have no idea the anticipation that you've just filled me with. I'm happy to be a part of such an awesome story and era of Anime.

5

u/[deleted] May 29 '19

If Isayama keeps delivering it can become FMA:B level.

3

u/hoeinheim77 May 29 '19

I agree! As time passes it's going to climb and climb in regard

5

u/[deleted] May 29 '19

Name checks out lol

3

u/hoeinheim77 May 29 '19

My boy Hoeinheim will never be forgotten. True legend!

2

u/[deleted] May 29 '19

Wait you are anime only? The arc after this one is the best written thing I've ever read. I hope Wit stays with AoT. AoT is already a masterpiece but it will reach legend status. (It will start this season btw)

2

u/hoeinheim77 May 29 '19

Yup anime only! I'm so excited for this story to continue especially with comments like that. It's exhilarating hearing that the best is yet to come

If they One Punch Man the show I'll never forgive them.

1

u/SpoiledSouls May 28 '19

I’m ootl with one punch man, what happened

2

u/[deleted] May 28 '19

Season 2 was handled by a different studio and the first couple of episodes were atrocious animation-wise. It's okay now, nowhere near the masterpiece that season 1 was but it's passable.

7

u/[deleted] May 27 '19

Was't the rumor that Production IG would take over? And with WIT being a subsidary of Production IG wouldn't necessarily change all that much?

1

u/MagentaWeeb May 27 '19

Idk man to me RtS is the best arc

6

u/Sahir1359 May 27 '19

even as a manga read is get so fucking hyped watching the anime

2

u/rjmessibarca May 27 '19

Anime only here, I predicted that the colossal titan would be defeated because of his steam. I believe that in some of the previous episodes, it was revealed that the colossal titan's steam consumes his muscles (in the information chart that is shown after the break).

1

u/killingspeerx Jul 25 '19

that for us anime only watchers,

I think the same is applied for manga readers also.

it's unpredictable

That was one of the main reasons I loved AoT when it first came out. We made up lots of theories and noticed many details, we were later rewarded by seeing that those details were not thrown randomly but were intentional.

1

u/hoeinheim77 Jul 25 '19

The attention to detail the show displays is incredible. Truly a masterpiece in world building and story telling.
