I thought the movies weren't canon

The movies are probably canon. The movie characters appear in manga and anime as cameos, and the first one specifically has multiple connections. So the first one is definitely canon, with the later ones being more debatable. The only one which I think has a chance of not being canon is the latest one, as the timeline to fit it into the series is really awkward

The characters can appear and the movies can still not be canon. No one is going around saying One Piece: Strong World and One Piece: Film Red are canon despite being the first appearances of Shiki and Uta, respectfully, who were later shown as canon characters.

Oda specifically stated that that was the situation though. Whereas horikoshi has always said the movies are made to fit into the story and always brings back movie characters and concepts into the manga. The movies are canon

The movies in MHA are all canon though

You are correct about that being how the one piece movies work, but MHA does not follow the same policy, and every indication is that the movies are canon. for one example, its shown that the family that All Might rescues in the beginning of the first movie was actually Stars and Stripes family. So that shows that an event depicted in the movie occurred in the show as well.

The movies are soft canon.

The broad strokes happened, but since they were produced in real life after the timeline of their events already finished, they’re basically never going to be referenced (and it makes zero sense for them to have happened exactly).

So for example, the first movie’s events will have happened (Deku went to I-Island and met the Shields, there was a plot by David Shield to steal back the Quirk Enhancing equipment to save All Might, it backfires and real villains try to steal it, the UA kids stop them).

But no one ever mentions that Deku and All Might teamed up to beat the villain, even though that’s something you’d think they’d reference. So it makes more sense to just think that however the situation resolved, it didn’t happen exactly like in the movie, because the movie’s spectacle doesn’t match up with the later timelines.

The movies are canon. There is a small dedicated group of weirdos who keep screaming they aren’t but every piece of evidence both within the story and from interviews confirms they are.

they're not

Horikoshi wrote them and said they are canon.

You're gonna need to supply some receipts on that. The only time I remember Horikoshi saying anything like this was when Heroes Rising was coming and he had stated that it was what he had planned for the original ending of the series but ended up not going with.

In the time it took you to write that you could have just googled "Are the MHA movies canon" and gotten your answer

They're in a weird semi-canon limbo. The series has various flashbacks and references to the movies, and some of the support equipment like All Might's suit and Deku's gauntlets come from characters we met in the movies. But at the same time there's not really any way to fit the movies into the timeline, and the MAJOR events from the movies are never referenced.

all of them fit relatively neatly into the timeline actually, its just the way that the anime made season 5 makes it a bit wonky.

Movie 1 takes place post Season 2 but before season 3 and movie 4 takes place directly after Season 7 ep 4 (in the week or so gap before the final war).

Movies 2 and 3 get iffy, but 3 takes place after season 5 and 2 is after the Joint Training arc but before the Endeavor Agency arc.

I mean, Melissa from the first movie have a voiced role in this episode so they are quite canon indeed.

The movies are all supposed to happen between the TV seasons. Like the second one happens during class 1A's summer break and the 3rd one clearly happens sometimes around the Endeavor intern arc.

The characters are canon, the events of the movies are not.

Horikoshi himself confirmed that the movies are canon to the series. And the anime has original episodes that are clearly made to promote the movies.

They are not referenced much in the main series is mostly a technical issue. Horikoshi isn't deeply involved in the creation process of the movies aside from giving some general ideas and character drafts. And the main series is always way ahead in the timeline when they aired, so it is not possible for Horikoshi to make substantial connections to the movies. But he still respects it and acknowledges their existence in the main series. Same for Vigilante.

The movies are more like filler than straight-up non-canon.

Yep, this is a situation where there are characters that are introduced that ARE canon to the series but the movie themselves are not canon.

It's like Uta in One Piece: Film Red and Shiki the Golden Lion in One Piece: Strong World. They are absolutely canon characters but the events of those movies straight up did not happen.

You have no basis for that statement. Just because one piece did that doesn’t mean that’s the default state of anime movies. The my hero movies are canon and your weird obsession with denying reality is strange and sad. You don’t have to like the movies. It’s fine if you hate them but don’t lie about them.
