I feel like klen's whole drive was out of boredom and pure, morbid curiosity. The show made his demeanor come off that way to me at least.

His "openness" seems to come more from letting events play out to learn as much as he could. The bandits are a perfect example of "yeah, I could kill everyone and do what I want, but I'd know nothing more than before"

He's invested now and has turned that corner, but the beginning was no different than humans smashing an ant hill.

He was also bounded to his role to protect his territory from human invasion. The idea humans could be more troublesome later on because of Alicia got him to pay attention. Luna was what got his curiosity going and was intending to get his answer about humanity before he wipes them out. Now that he knows his role doesn't hold any meaning there's no need to do the whole wipe out humanity thing. What drives him instead of curiosity and precaution.
