My guess is that at this academy you have to be of certain high birth and she's going to supposedly be a relative of the king.

I am personally shocked that this story is taking a "magic school" turn.

Klen will turn her regalia into a magic wand and she will be "The Water Magician!"

I'm ready for Abrasive Jet 65535.

u/redlaWw Sep 17 '25

IIRC he uses exact powers of 2 for his jets, rather than Mersenne numbers, so that would be Abrasive Jet 65536.

That show had potential for the first 2 episodes, then crashed and burned so hard lol

I was totally ok with it being 12 episodes of slice of life learning magic and surviving/growing. Peak was talking to the damn dragon.

All of that for literally nothing haha

It's a subverted Isekai. The MC's in on the joke: the whole thing is a sly satire on the genre, so everything's a trope. He calls it out, too, multiple times when he treats everyone he meets as a trope.

If you think the people are real, then he's a bit of a dick. But it's a generic Isekai, and he knows he's in one. The people aren't real. Ceci n’est pas une pipe.

I wouldn't really call it satire. Sure, the MC makes those remarks, but at this point, I think every isekai MC does (especially every villainess one).

Satire would be obvious cliche jokes/characters but it's clear the show isn't doing that. If it is trying to do that, it's not good at that either lol.

The writing is just bad and clunky, the animation is borderline bad, the story is boring....I stick to my original comment

You’re correct that it’s not really a satire. It’s a parody of the genre. The fact that you’ve seen those same silly plot points and gags is the point. They’re exaggerating the tropes on purpose. Like the Scary Movie series. Not everyone’s cup of tea for sure and I’m not a huge fan of too many parodies myself. Parodies are kinda “bad and clunky” on purpose. That’s the joke.

Huh? It is absolutely not a parody either. I can not think of a single instance of comic relief, comedic setup or reference to another isekai (which would be the main driving point of a parody).

I really do not see how the main character making random quips of "This must be the <insert RPG/isakai trope> part" 2 or 3 times an episode makes it a parody, or even a comedic isekai anime.

You could borderline say his spell chants are a joke, except they explain and show why they are the way they are (and not in a haha, that's funny way) in EP 1 or 2.

Again, even if what you say is true, it's so poorly done that it has gone so far over my head that I would have no chance to catch it.

Edit: Just to add, this thread is from 5 episodes in and not a single, solitary comment even mentions humor/satire/parady/comedic/w.e. as being part of the show. So if it's supposed to be there, no one else is catching it either https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/1mhaec1/what_are_your_guys_thought_on_the_water_magician/

It’s absolutely a parody, just one you don’t enjoy. That’s fine.

I can’t stand the “Scary Movie” or “Epic Movie” parodies. But I liked “Not Another Teen Movie” a lot back in the day. Parodies are probably one of the most subjective forms of comedy.

But it kinda seems like you wanna argue no matter what. So I’ll pass on that. You smart. Me dumb. You won Reddit.

Edit: They were talking about “Mashle” originally, the magic-school/OP-protagonist anime. Not “The Water Magician” anime. I’ll call that my bad.

Never watched The Water Magician because it looked very generic. Even the name is so generic that I didn’t even think of that show since “The Water Magician” is as bland as it gets. Thought we were still talking about Mashle lol.

My bad. Thanks for letting me know I was right for not bothering with that show.

Lmfao ok, that makes sense. I seriously thought you had no what you were talking about at this point. My brain was seriously hurting

"The Water Magician!"

guaranteed 1000x better than the Water Magician that also aired this season.

I feel like that wouldn't matter since she basically saved the entire nation lol I thought it was to heal her deeper wounds further, like Klen had to do with the troll for Nelluru.

8

u/RealMr_Slender Sep 17 '25

probably also to allow Alicia to use magic since Hideans were said to be more inclined to use it

8

u/melindypants https://myanimelist.net/profile/melindypants Sep 17 '25

Inclined but that doesn't mean they are the only ones capable...plus it's been forbidden this whole time in their land - just seems weird. I guess we will find out in S2!

That's exactly what I was thinking... probably no shortage of royal hidenean body parts lying around for klen to patch her up with.

School arcs and tournament arcs are definitely low points for me in anime. Judging by this first season I don't expect something that fits the mold so much that it's bad.

u/Ill_Act_1855 Sep 17 '25

been reading the manga, the next arc is really good, so I wouldn't worry about that

I just trust in the author. The anime has been a banger thus far - I'm sure they wouldn't go for something that low.

Hiding that she's the hero would be reason enough

1

u/Queue_Jumping_Quack Sep 18 '25

Yeah... I was not expecting a "magic school arc" next... flashbacks of Maou 2099. Hopefully this doesn't mark a complete and permanent tone shift to the series.

1

u/vRiise Sep 18 '25

Aren't Hideans (with talent) only able to use magic without use of crystals?

i mean gotta say whilst i agree with u... it was kind of foreshadowed A LOT XD
