only complaint is that the "punishment" at the end is just so ridiculously passive Japanese BS,

I'm guessing that this escort quest will be as a way to keep Ryo out of town while other investigators show up. It's the guild master's way of doing what he can to keep Ryo out of official records and investigations.

My guess would be this is actually part of a bigger job. It looks like a simple quest, but might be tied up to something. Basically the guild master might be manipulating/utilising Ryo now that he knew his capability.

I'm also annoyed by the guild master saying, "But even so, you cannot simply ignore a guard's order not to enter the dungeon". So next time people's lives are in danger you want Ryo to hang back and wait around until everyone's dead?

I'm pretty sure it's just part of cover up, so nobody questions why he didn't get punished for ignoring guards orders, and investigates into him why he gets special treatment.

Agreed. My only issue with the show so far is that Ryo is just too annoyingly passive and subservient to authority. But it really came to a head there. There is ZERO reason for the guild leader to even mention that Ryo ignored the guards. Because Ryo is a pushover it goes fine, but it's just needlessly antagonistic and has a whoile lof of potential downside.

It would be like if I did a month's worth of work for my entire department in 3 days and my boss came up to me with a critique afterwards that I failed to CC them on an email. I would immediately look to sell my services to someone else that didn't hassle me when I do their work for them.

Because they're not publicizing that Ryo saved the day, the only thing those topside of the dungeon know is that he ignored guards and ran into the dungeon.

That's something that would get somebody in trouble when the dungeon is locked down like it was - so he has to talk to him about it and give him some kind of punishment if one just for public perception.

If Ryo had given pushback, I'm sure the guild master would have completely backed down - since he already knows it's dangerous for the whole country if Ryo becomes their enemy.

I mean, the heroes' party could defeat the current demon lord and Ryo is supposedly a thousand times stronger than the hero.

The guild is like the law in this place? Ryo broke the law so what do you mean he doesn't owe anything? The police in real life reduce sentences for criminals all the time for information or other work as needed.

I don't think Ryo is necessarily opposed to traveling. When seemingly nothing poses a threat to you an escort mission is basically a paid vacation.

This might be a calculated move to get him out of town until all the nobles have left, masqueraded as "punishment" so that Ryo can't decide to refuse the quest.
