I love this twist really. It is so standard for the strong typed older female student to be the prince's fiance and have some kind of awkward love triangle with the MC but here it is actually someone totally unexpected, being just another one of the guys. (plus it is a clue to monica's complicated feelings that when she was asked about dance partners she didn't think of any of the guys besides the Prince)
