Wait, does Felix know at this point? The official story is that Isabelle hates Monica, so why would Felix smile when Cryil told him Isabelle wanted to be involved? This was before they would have had any chance to talk things out and set up their little show, and if anything, was coded as an "out" for Felix's anger. He let his mask slip a bit in the hallway and I got kinda scared he was going to go nuclear on the Mean Girls.

But then Felix seemed relieved that Isabelle was stepping up to 'save' Monica in his place? Why would he instantly trust her?

Or was he just hoping he could strong arm Isabelle into protecting the adoptive sister she publicly hates to avoid defending Monica himself?

Isabelle probably already had a bit of a reputation and had no connection to the poisoners. He might have suspected that Isabelle was acting out due to the perceived slight on the Norton name, not to defend her poisoners.

Yeah, but he was approaching "Imma murder that bitch AND her fucking dog" levels of anger, but he immediately smiled when Isabelle popped up. It's as if he knew, without reservation, that he could trust her to be his avatar of vengeance.

Maybe he was just counting on Isabelle understanding the importance of names in society.

Or maybe he did some digging off-screen and figured out enough. He already suspects (rightly so) Monica is an undercover agent sent by his father (or grandfather) to watch over him. It's not beyond reason to think he kept digging and found out that "Monica Norton" doesn't exist.

But even so, the Nortons are clearly protecting her, so he can count on Isabelle to step up here... and if she refuses to play ball, he can play blackmail.

I thought Isabelle's appearance was pre-arranged. There was some off hand comment about isabelle forcing herself into a student council meeting. I assume everything was planned out when the interrogation started.

The little performance Isabelle put on was clearly pre-arranged, but I'm talking about before that.

In the hallway, where Felix thinks back to his own trauma, his mask starts to slip. I felt the tone of his voice was... dangerous. He's normally so polished and in control of himself, but some real emotion was slipping through there.

Then Cryil tells him about Isabelle and Felix immediately smiles. Before speaking with her, he already knew he could rely on Isabelle to take the 'blame' for defending Monica. As such, he didn't have to worry about suppressing his rage, making a scene as the second prince, or letting the b!tches go free.

So without even talking to Isabelle first, he already felt the situation was back under control. If he doesn't know, then I believe he already suspected that Monica wasn't really a Norton but had their backing.

I guess the fact that Isabella basically jumped the gun to immediately request to be present during the interrogation is what tipped off Felix. Although I fully agree the anime did a bad job showing this.

I'd be willing to accept that... accept Cryil leaned forward and whispered the bit about Isabelle into Felix's ear. He clearly thought it was important, and knew that Felix would understand it was important. Considering the state of mind Felix was in and how quick his mood changed...

Given Isabelle and Monica's cover story, the initial reaction would be to dismiss the spoiled rich girl as a nuisance and not the cavalry coming in to help. It just didn't feel like something they both instantly figured out on the spot, but was more confirmation of something they already knew/suspected.

Felix seems to be incredibly sharp, I think he knows Isabelle's "hatred" is a front but I don't think he knows why.

He likely knew enough about noble society to know that Isabelle would be in full on family vengeance mode. She may hate her adopted sister, but that's not important in regards to an outsider trying to murder a member of the family.

Hell hath no fury like a women scorned, let alone a short tempered aristocrat whose honor has been slighted. A high ranking noble's daughter demands penance against those who wronged her family? He's smiling because he knows he doesn't have to do anything but enjoy the show
