Not just under the protection. According to her cover she's a member of their family. Adopted, but still a family member.

Exactly. No matter her origin, no matter how the rest of the family sees her, they let her wear their name.

If the Nortons truly didn't care about Monica, or saw her as a liability, then they wouldn't let Monica call herself a Norton: they wouldn't let her be one of them. That name would have never been given or been stripped from her before she left their home.

But it wasn't, and so long as Monica is allowed to call herself a Norton, then the Norton's must take responsibility for her.

This is something every noble should understand, and if the Dumb Witch couldn't grasp that, then she was always going to bring trouble to her family sooner rather than later.

Exactly. It's entirely within the ability of the family head to disinherit a child if he really didn't want her associated with the family. The fact that he didn't should have been a major red flag that, no matter how much of a shame they consider her to be, she is still family.

Now the stupid bully's family is going to have to burn political favor and owe a massive debt to the Norton family to try to smooth this over without things escalating to hostilities. And the girl will become known throughout noble society as a poisoner, which (historically speaking) was an especially bad stigma in that sort of society.

Tbh even I forgot that she's adopted in her cover story, I was running on thinking she was more of a maid.

I thought that she was an illegitimate child. It's hard to remember a fake story that is rarely brought up.

The cover story is that she was adopted by the previous-generation Count Kelbek's widow because she reminded the widow of her late husband. You're presumably supposed to infer that other characters assume that that she's believed to be an illegitimate child, yeah lol
