The OP kinda brings home the fact the way Maomao sees herself and how others see her is completely different.

There's also the fact that even when it comes to how she sees herself, MaoMao lies a lot to avoid problems she doesn't want to confront. She'll deny thoughts she has that are inconvenient, deny things about herself that she dislikes, or force a version of herself that isn't strictly speaking true. Like, she constantly insists her position is that of a commoner, and while that's more or less how she was raised, and how she wants to live, it's also something she's known isn't actually true, because her biological dad who wants nothing more than to dote on her is one of the most important people in the country sitting right at the top of the military hierarchy and the current head of a noble clan. Regardless of whether she likes it or not, her position isn't that of an ordinary commoner, yet she'll consistently insist as such. And this type of thinking is a constant, defining, character flaw

The OP has really grown on me. I liked the previous one more still, but I'm greatly enjoying the subtle details and hints throughout, and your point of the "outside of our narrator perspective" is a great tidbit to throw in, especially as I imagine we'll start seeing Maomao's entire view of the Rear Palace, its occupants, and herself begin to change over this next stretch of the plot.
