I REEEEEALLY hope nothing bad happens to Luomen while he's here. I hope that if anything bad happens, the worst is something like his age kicks in during the delivery and he has to talk Maomao through everything.

Anyway, so glad Maomao was able to protect out little cinnamon roll, too bad we didn't get to see Loulan's reaction. With how the ice cream is framed at the end of the OP, I thought it was gonna turn into a bigger deal.

Actually, you make an interesting point - if Luomen can't physically perform the procedure and instead directs Maomao through a successful birthing for Lady Gyokuyou, that would be a huge symbolic "passing of the torch", and would only further cement Maomao's place in the Rear Palace as a whole.

Maybe a touch trite as far as storytelling and plot progression goes, but it would help Luomen not be integrated back into the Rear Palace (thus not threatening our favorite Quack Doctor), would allow his legacy to continue in a not-wholly-besmirched manner through his adopted daughter/grandniece, and he could then ride off into the sunset and enjoy his twilight years in peace knowing his honor was in some manner restored by helping to save the child (plus if something could be done about clearing his name, as Lady Gyokuyou hinted at this episode).

And Maomao would learn a new skill which is like catnip to her anyway.

I imagine the emperor would either change the rule there and then for the sake of his kid or pull the old, "Whatever happens in the Rear Palace stays in the Rear Palace. Luomen and Maomao went into my wife's room and Luomen came out with by baby."

I think if Maomao was the only one who could do it, Lady Gyokuyou has enough pull to force the issue and bend anyone who objects to her command. And it would be in service of saving the Emperor's child - the same Emperor who knows who Maomao is, and how capable she is.

So yeah, you're not wrong - but I also think extenuating circumstances apply to this situation.

I don't know if anything bad is going to happen to Luomen but judging by the next episode preview it seems like a lot of old baggage from his time in the rear palace is going to rear its ugly head.

We've seen him doing plenty of manual labor - usually medicine grinding - so that I'm not worried about his physical capabilities. It seems like only his legs are a problem.

His knee specifically I think? Didn't the old Empress Dowager order the removal of some bone in his knee to cripple him as "punishment"?

Jesus christ. I thought it was some small bone that just made him stiff, not an entire kneecap. Luomen really got fucked over through no fault of his own.
