Which University is best for Msc in Data Science?

Hi everyone,

I’ve received offers for a few MSc programmes and I’m trying to decide which one to go for:

  • Queen Mary University of London – Data Science
  • University of Nottingham – Data Science
  • University of York – Data Science
  • Newcastle University – Advanced Data Science
  • University of Liverpool – Advanced Data Science & AI
  • University of Reading – Data Science & Advanced Computing

Background:
BSc Computer Science (AI & Big Data focus)
Relevant modules include:
Big Data, Data Mining, Databases (SQL + NoSQL), AI, Computer Vision, Algorithms, Distributed Systems, etc.

Career goals:
Data Scientist / ML Engineer / Data Engineer / AI Engineer

I’m mainly aiming for industry roles in the UK, not really planning on PhD/research at this stage.

My initial thoughts (based on modules only):

  • QMUL → strong in big data, cloud, distributed systems
  • Nottingham → quite balanced (ML, stats, optimisation, big data)
  • Liverpool → mix of AI, ML and analytics
  • Newcastle → more AI / deep learning focused
  • York → solid general data science + cloud/ML basics
  • Reading → broader computing + data science mix

Would really appreciate opinions on:

  • Which of these is best for employability in the UK
  • Which has the strongest reputation with employers (DS / ML / DE roles)
  • Which would add the most value given my AI + Big Data background (so not just repeating undergrad stuff)
  • If you had these offers, which would you personally pick and why?

Thanks a lot — any advice from students or people working in the UK tech industry would really help.

University Of London Degree or Open Uni?

Ughh, I’m in such a difficult position. I’m 25, working full time, run a charity and trying to build a business. I’m a futures trader (self employed) and this ignited my interest in economics.

I initially applied for Open University Business and Economics course. You’re pretty much accepted straight away snd there are benefits with maintenance grants. I’m currently living at home, my mum is vulnerable and in significant debt and I cannot leave her on her to study on campus. I’m also in debt and need to work it off (not a huge amount) but I need to get it sorted. The open university provides almost 5k in non repayable grants which I am eligible for. I’m also eligible for a top up loan with open Uni.

I then applied on a whim for University Of Londons Economics and Finance online degree - directed by LSE. I didn’t expect to get in but I did. I was so happy. The course looks rigorous, but it’s a very well respected university so I decided to go with that. I’ve now been led to believe that this degree provides you with no maintenance or government grants. Which seems so unfair as I can’t work full time and study this degree.

I’ve also been told that the degree is basically marked off a 3 hour written exam at the end of the course based off prior students (picture below).

I’m in a really difficult position now. I’m thinking that the UOL degree is a much more academic route. But the financial impact is going to be huge, whereas Open Uni provides grants I’d never even have to pay back.

I wish it wasn’t about the money. But it’s a huge factor.

Can anyone provide any clarity on whether University of Londons distant learning courses qualify for no help (except tuition loans)? What would you do if you were in my position?

Are universities focusing enough on graduate jobs now?

With graduate schemes becoming more competitive and a lot of students worrying about employability, it feels like universities are under more pressure than ever to show clear career outcomes. Do you think your university actually prepares people for the job market well, or are students mostly expected to figure that side out themselves? This ties into ongoing discussion around employability, placements and graduate outcomes across UK universities.

University of Sunderland

Has anyone studied MPharm at the University of Sunderland? How was your experience overall? Was the workload overwhelming with long lectures, and exams, or was it manageable if you stayed organized? I’d also like to know how supportive the lecturers were and how you found student life there, especially as an international student.

Also, how was the interview process? Was it difficult, and what kind of questions did they ask?

Is anyone else finding the job market brutal right now?

Been applying for internships and grad roles lately and honestly it’s starting to feel like applications just disappear into a black hole half the time 😭 Between ghosting, automated rejections and jobs wanting loads of experience for “entry level” roles, it’s getting pretty draining. Is anyone actually having much luck at the moment, or has anyone changed their approach and found something that works better?

nus or the uk

hello i’m a student from malaysia and i’ve recently received an offer from nus for engineering and my deadline is nearing. However, i have also received uk offers but i would only consider manchester. i’m currently in a dilemma as there are many pros and cons to both nus and manchester

nus:
pros - more prestigious, cheaper, well known globally (good for graduate programmes)
cons - no study abroad experience (since i’m from malaysia), sg culture seems super competitive

manchester:
pros - study abroad experience (able to go around europe)
cons - nus is basically better than manchester in almost all aspects, expensive

basically NUS is better than manchester in almost all aspects but i personally think i could meet more people around the world in manchester and I would be able to be challenged, not just academically, and grow. honestly really stuck, does anyone have any advice? would you pick manchester over NUS

EDIT: i miscalculated and both manchester and NUS would cost about the same

Hi I am considering MSc in Finance degree and I applied to various universities in the UK. Down below are the universities which I am considering to join. Could you please help me rank them in order of preference by giving weights to the quality of study, employer preference, ROI and global recognition. I would be extremely grateful as I am hell confused and I have to accept one offer within a week.
1. University of Leeds
2. University of Bath
3. University of Liverpool
4. University of Exeter
5. University of Nottingham
6. Henley Business School
7. Durham University (decision yet to be received).

Unsure of what Uni to go to

I a current Welsh Yr 12 student who is looking to go into Psychology at University and Im hoping to get advice on which Uni's I should really be looking into.

There are some key things to note

Mainly that I can't get into most Uni's due to not having an A Level in a Science subject as my current choices are

BTECH Business - On track for hopefully a D* but atleast a D

BTECH ICT - On track for hopefully a D* but atleast a D

A Level ASBW - On track for an A* but want to give leeway

As Level Product Design - Which I plan to drop as I was giving incorrect directions on the coursework for my year and am likely going to end the year with an E

In exchange for Product Design I am planning to pick up As Level Psychology or As Level RE depending on if there are time table clashes

I am wondering what Uni's I could realistic get into, Im looking for more of a city life away from home but even with that considered my top choices are Lancaster and Nottingham Trent

Thank you to anyone who choses to interact with my post!

Film and Media Courses in Scotland

I did an HNC in Media and Communication instead of going straight to uni because of a family bereavement and everything going on at the time. It was honestly the best option for me then financially and personally, and I thought it would help me figure out what I actually wanted to do.

Now that I’m nearly finished the course, I’ve realised I’m way more interested in film/TV and creative production than the actual media and comms side of things. I don’t really see myself going into marketing, PR etc and I’m worried I’ve ended up slightly on the wrong path.

I’ve got an offer from Glasgow Caledonian University for second year Media and Comms which feels like the sensible option because it’s local and affordable, but I keep going back and forward on whether I’d actually enjoy it enough to commit to another few years.

I also got an offer for Film and Media at Queen Margaret University which feels much more like “me”, but realistically I don’t think the finances of moving/living there are possible right now.

Now I’m debating whether I should:
• take the GCU offer because it’s the practical choice
• stay at college another year and do a TV/filmmaking HND instead
• or somehow try and make QMU work financially

I know an extra year isn’t the end of the world but I can’t stop feeling like I’m falling behind compared to everyone else.

Has anyone else gone through something similar, especially through the college to uni route? And if anyone’s done a TV/film HND, did it actually help you get into better opportunities afterwards?
