Success Story/Timeline Got my HPI visa, happy to share my experience

Hi everyone,

I recently got my HPI Visa and decided to take the leap. Hoping I made the right decision xD

I’d love to hear from others who are also on the HPI visa, have moved to the UK through this route, or are considering applying.

Also happy to share my experience with the application process if anyone is planning to apply and has questions. Not an immigration expert, of course, but I can share what worked for me and what the process looked like.

Would be great to exchange notes and learn from people who have already made the move.

Success Story/Timeline HPI visa approved within a day

My timeline was as follows

Ecctis

9-april

submitted application

15-april

Additional documents needed

27-april

Consent form needed for university contact

12-may

Ecctis contacted my university

My uni responded the same day

18-may

Positive verification

19-may

Positive outcome

HPI Visa

19-may

Submitted visa application late at night with fast track fee and did my biometrics online (EU passport)

I did this as I have a trip planned to the uk in two weeks and travel to the UK is not allowed when a visa is pending

20-may

At 11:00 uk time I received a positive outcome

Tips

-The planned travel date is the start date of your visa validity

-You are allowed to enter the uk later than the planned travel date

-The planned travel date can be no more than 3 months later than your submission date

-Travel to the common travel area during a pending visa application may lead to refusal for some reason (I was told this by a lawyer of my future employer)

Any questions feel free to ask!

Edit: in case it's helpful for anyone, here are the HPI visa caseworker guidelines. https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/69288ddfce50d215cae9618f/High+Potential+Individual+caseworker+guidance.pdf

This answers all the questions about the process, including many of them that get posted on this subreddit. I hope it's helpful for you. Back to my original post below:

Hi all, I wanted to post this timeline and information in case it’s helpful.

My day to apply was expiring in May 2026.

I secured a UK based job in April 2026, so I started the process on the edge of my cut off.

April 25th: applied for ECCTIS. On this date I asked my university (a University of California campus) to email the documents to emails I found searching online (mailto:[documents@ecctis.com](mailto:documents@ecctis.com) and mailto:[visa.verifications@ecctis.com](mailto:visa.verifications@ecctis.com)). I also applied for my HPI visa this date, but I made a huge mistake: I was already in the UK on my tourist visa. I cancelled my application and left the country 48 hours later to reapply from my country. Don’t be like me! Only apply in the UK if you are already living there.

April 27th: my university sent the documents to the ECCTIS emails.

April 28th: returned to my country of residence (US)

May 6th: didn’t see anything move on ECCTIS’ end, so I contacted ECCTIS via the messaging service and they said they couldn’t help expedite the process. I also let them know my university emailed everything to them in advance and thanked them for their time.

May 7th: Got my application refund from the first visa application.

May 8th: ECCTIS was approved.

May 9th: submitted HPI application for the second time with an arrival date of August 9th (full 90 day period, which is the maximum you can ask for). I was very worried because my primary bank account dropped 40 pounds below the requirement. I successfully used a retirement account and got a letter from my retirement service provider explicitly stating that the funds are available for immediate withdrawal. Retirement accounts work for this, folks!

May 12th: had biometrics in person. Information was sent to the UK by VFS during closing hours UK time. Got the notification that my healthcare surcharge refund from the first visa application is returning back to me.

May 13th: HPI visa was approved at 4:12 pm UK time. I shit you not, the same day they received everything. I am so happy, especially with the mistakes I made along the way.

As for a job, I don’t have much advice on how to land a role other than network with everyone in your target city who lives in your field and use a recruiter if you need. I LinkedIn’d the shit out of people, messaged everyone with my intent to move and desired jobs, set up virtual meetings to discuss the career landscape (so many strangers agreed to talk to me and even gave me tips on my UK CV), and applied to all the roles around the UK that are similar to my line of work. I also set google alerts for my line of work and so I got notifications about openings that way. And now I have a dream role with a very nice team in a dream city. And my HPI visa!

Best of luck everyone.

Success Story/Timeline Full HPI Timeline, from Application to Moving to the UK

Hey all,

This subreddit was helpful to me as I researched this visa and the application process, so I'm hoping I can be helpful to others in turn.

I'm an American. I graduated from Duke in May 2021 (undergrad), so this was my last year of eligibility for the HPI visa and I decided to go for it.

Here's how that played out:

  • February 3, 2026: Ecctis application submitted
  • February 9: Ecctis status switched to 'in progress'
  • February 10: Ecctis verification completed
  • February 10: Submitted HPI visa application to UKVI, paid health surcharge and application fees
  • February 11: Scheduled VFS biometrics appointment and uploaded documents
  • February 13: Attended in-person VFS appointment
    • This was the worst part of the entire process. I had to drive four hours to a different state to go to the appointment, arrived an hour in advance, and still nearly missed it because there was no system of calling people up to the floor where VFS offices were located (which were not publicly accessible).
    • Once I was in, the wait was long and disorganized, employees were curt and dismissive, and at one point my passport was handed to a completely different person with a completely different visa and only made its way back to me because she realized it was someone else's when tucking it back into her passport cover. I was a nervous wreck after this appointment.
  • February 17: Approved by UKVI for HPI visa
    • Note: there was no communication between the VFS appointment and the approval, no notification of receipt of documents, etc.
  • February 18: Set up eVisa and linked it to my UKVI account

And that's that! Except, no, it isn't, because getting the visa is just the first step of actually emigrating:

  • February 27: Began an international transfer process with my current employer, who operates in both the US and UK.
  • March 6: Was approved for international transfer and the process of trying to place me somewhere in the UK began
  • April 8: Got my first update from the UK side of the company, who'd been unsuccessful in finding me anything in the area where I wanted to live
  • Early April: Began the search for a place to live.
    • This is much harder than it sounds. I have savings and thought I could provide a large deposit up front even if I didn't have proof of UK income or a UK-based guarantor. I was wrong!
    • If you're intending to live in England, read up on 2026 changes to renter's rights.
  • April 22: Signed a lodger's agreement with a live-in landlord I found on Spareroom. This ended up being the easiest route when immigration and employment status was taken into account.
  • May 1: Got a job offer from the UK side of the company - but not anywhere near the place I'd just found accommodations.
  • May 10: Moved to the UK on the day my eVisa began.

Now, I've been here three weeks, I'm currently doing remote freelance work separate from my previous employer, from whom I'm officially on a leave of absence for now.

The big disclaimer I would tell anyone considering this route: make sure you actually, truly want to live in the UK and make sure you can financially support yourself without working for 6+ months.

For me, it's perfect, because I've dreamed of living here for years, I had a stable cushion of savings, and the UK itself was the appeal of the visa. I'm a massive football fan and I've already been to premier league matches, made friends with other supporters, and started content creation projects. I feel immediately at home. I adore the city I've chosen to live in.

But bear in mind:

  • The HPI visa is not widely known and you will have to explicitly explain it to potential employers.
  • You should always prominently state in your CV and cover letter that you have the right to work in the UK until x date and that you do not require visa sponsorship.
  • You will probably have no luck with job applications until you have a UK address and phone number. Even then, the job market is highly competitive.
  • If you work for an international company, transferring might be a legitimate route. But don't rely on it.
  • Renting is a big challenge for new immigrants and you may find yourself in expensive or unstable short term situations at first: Airbnb, lodging agreements (less rights and protections than a real tenant gets), or living with friends / family.

Happy to answer questions people have or clarify my experience.

Success Story/Timeline Ecctis QLS approval in just 2 weeks!

Hi everyone! Since I’ve gotten so much help from this sub, I wanted to share my timeline. Mine went pretty fast, so I figured I’d share a few tips.

  1. 5/18 - Applied. Right after applying, I reached out to my school. (I emailed the general undergrad registrar even though I graduated with a master's). They told me to use Parchment, so I sent my transcript through Parchment to [QLS.verifications@ecctis.com](mailto:QLS.verifications@ecctis.com) that same day.

  2. 5/22 - I got an email from Parchment confirming my document was received and viewed by Ecctis on 5/22 at 3:51 PM UTC.

  3. 5/27 - My status changed from "In Queue" to "Reviewing."

  4. 6/1 - Approved.

I was honestly a bit worried that sending the Parchment transcript ahead of time might mess up the process or make it hard for Ecctis to track my file. But since I was on a tight timeline, I had to rush it and send it before Ecctis could even reach out to my school. Looking back, I think doing that actually sped up the whole process significantly!

Hope this helps anyone who's in the same boat!

Success Story/Timeline Visa Success Story - Pakistan

I graduated in 2022 and finally applied for my visa after contemplating it for months.

I got my degree attested in 2025 and I started lurking on LinkedIn to see what the market is like for my field.

TB test is a requirement for people applying from Pakistan so I booked an appointment and went. Got my TB certificate.

I applied for my visa on 7th April, booked my biometrics for the 14th (8:30 am), and I got my visa decision on 15th (9pm). I wasn’t expecting such a quick decision!!

Since it’s an eVisa, you have to create a ukvi account and follow the steps mentioned. It’s all very straightforward.

My visa start date is end of June, and I’m planning to move by mid july latest.

Good luck to whoever is applying! Next step is to start networking and applying for jobs 😮‍💨

Success Story/Timeline UK HPI Visa Timeline - For Reference

Sharing my timeline for your clarity!

  1. Ecctis Submission: Tue 20 Jan
  2. Ecctis Approved: Fri 23 Jan
  3. HPI Application Complete: Fri 23 Jan
  4. HPI Document Evidence Submission: Mon 26 Jan
  5. HPI Approved: Tue 27 Jan

End-to-end process took exactly 1 week.

Notes & Caveats

  • Large US university - may have a more standardised procedure
  • Arranged for the transcript to be sent to [visa.verifications@ecctis.com](mailto:visa.verifications@ecctis.com) but not sure if that made a difference
  • EU National with biometric passport - did biometric verification via the app and entire visa process was online

Edit

  • Since the biometric verification process keeps coming up I am sharing some documentation on the UK Gov website.

4) 16th October: Completed my application and paid $1584 for the application fee and $3726 for the immigration surcharge!

Success Story/Timeline Visa Success Story from Canada and Thailand

Hi all,

I got a lot of useful information from this channel. Finally, our applications are approved.

Main Application

University: University of British Columbia

ECCTIS Application: Jan 27, 2026

ECCTIS Approval: Feb 4, 2026

Biometrics Appointment: March 17, 2026

Visa Approved: March 18, 2026 (e-visa)

Visa Start date: June 10, 2026

Applied From: Vancouver, Canada

Dependent Application

Biometrics Appointment: March 30, 2026

Visa Approved: April 7, 2026 (e-visa)

Applied From: Thailand

I hadn’t applied for a UK visa before, but my application was approved within 24 hours after the biometrics appointment. My partner applied after my visa had already been approved. It took about one business week for him. Since it’s an e-visa, we didn’t need to leave our passports at VFS.

Success Story/Timeline Successful HPI Application + Tips | US to UK | Fall 2025

So grateful and relieved that the process is done and happy to say that I've received an HPI visa + have been living in England for the past week!

Dropping my timelines and experience in case it helps any one, and thank you to the others in this subreddit who have done the same. It helped so much with my HPI application process and anxiety!

Notes:

  • I'm an American citizen + American university graduate not near my 5 year date
  • There was a large delay in the application process in September due to personal life events; without those gaps my visa process took approx 3-4 weeks

Timeline:

  • August 20th: applied for ECCTIS
  • August 21st: ID verified
  • August 22nd:
    • sent email to university to let them know ECCTIS would contact them
    • received response from university saying National Clearinghouse will be fine
  • August 28th: positive verification + completed ECCTIS application
  • September: worked through HPI application + personal life events
  • October 1st:
    • paid for national health surchage + application fees
    • selected intended entry date as 10/20
    • submitted HPI application
  • October 6th:
    • paid for and booked VFS appointment for 10/8
      • waited a week from HPI submission since this was when I was free to travel
      • opted for document upload services and courier fees
      • note: you can opt for any of these services on site
    • reserved accomodations since I'm from out of town
  • October 8th:
    • went through VFS process (about 30 minutes)
    • you will really only need to submit the requested documents listed
    • left my passport with VFS staff to be mailed out
  • October 9th: received email from noreply@fcdos . gov . uk saying application successful and granted entry starting October 20th
  • October 10th: received VFS email saying passport + documents were received and dispatched from the UK Premium Application Center
  • October 13th: passport and documents received with visa placed in passport
  • October 16th:
    • registered for eVisa
    • booked flight to London, Heathrow Airport for 10/22
  • October 22nd: flew out in the evening
  • October 23rd: arrived in London, Heathrow with no issues or customs questions

Application / Process Notes:
This is just my experience + how I navigated as someone with an approved HPI; take it with a grain of salt and do your research whether these tips work for you!

  • This process is expensive, so if you're on a tight budget, add another $500 for what you think it'll cost as a little protective padding for surprise expenses
  • Savings account statement will work just fine for proof of funds, make sure you have it sitting in there for the right number of days in advanced
  • VFS centers have some that operate 8-5 every day, or limited hours on random days throughout the month; I opted for an 8-5 location and the process was smooth, but check ahead of time for availability if you're on a time crunch
  • Americans don't have a national ID card (real ID, drivers license, passport don't count) so I put "no" for this question and was approved just fine
  • If you have travelled internationally, you'll have to list your destinations INCLUDING any countries you had layovers in, so start tracking your travel history

Moving Process:

  • Packed the necessities (clothing + paperwork + tech) + some gifts for people I was staying with in one backpack, one carry one luggage, one check in luggage, and one cardboard box taped up as another check in luggage
  • Booked a one-way ticket from US to Heathrow around October 16th for travel date of October 22nd with economy plus + two checked bags (approx. $800 USD)
  • Lucky enough to only have one short layover and mostly empty planes for both my domestic + my flight to Heathrow, likely because it was off-season travel
  • The customs process is rather smooth and had no questions asked of me or anything at all, just had my fingers and face scanned similar to the biometrics appointment + passport and then could walk through!

General Tips:

  • Fall has some of the cheapest flights from the US to the UK, so if you're looking to save money you can try to budget your application timing to fly out August - November
  • Remember London isn't the entirety of England or the UK, so if you first arrive without a job / accomodations secured, you can try settling or renting in another city or town that has cheaper rent until you're ready to find a more concrete place
  • If you have a valid American driver's license, you can apply for an International Driver's Permit (IDP) through AAA for approx $20-40USD and you'll be able to drive in the UK; I recommend going in person as its fast and a quick 20 minute appointment!
  • Get yourself a credit card without international fees; I wasn't able to do this before leaving and it's been a bit troublesome. Apple Cards I believe don't charge a fee, but don't have as good of rewards. Many of my friends recommend Chase or American Express, but do your research and be dilligent!
  • If you're not from a cold place, then pack or start buying warm thermals to bring over as they're cheaper in the US and you will most definitely need them in the UK; the ones from Uniqlo have served me really well
  • Voltage and plugs work different in the UK than the US; be sure when you're shopping that you're buying a converter for your electronics and not just an adapter unless you're just planning to plug in Apple products, which automatically convert
  • Vaccuum storage bags are a MUST if you're bringing a lot of clothing; so good for cramming tons into your luggage and for storing anything you're not wearing

Happy to answer any additional questions on what I can here! If you're in the application process, sending you the best of luck and hope you make it to the UK soon!

Success Story/Timeline Visa (eVisa) success story and timeline - Jan 2026 India

Hey all. I just received my eVisa and wanted to share my timeline. I feel lethargic typing in all the details so feel free to leave comments with your questions and I'll address them later.

VAC: New Delhi

University: American

9 Jan 2026- Documents gathering and reading up details. Started visa application.

11 Jan 2026- ECCTIS fee paid and verification request initiated

12 Jan 2026- I read here somewhere that American universities delay things because they refer ECCTIS to national student clearinghouse. So, I was proactive and emailed registrar that ECCTIS would be contacting via e-mail and that I consent to sharing my information.

15 Jan 2026- Received a positive educational and english verification UPI code by ECCTIS

22 Jan 2026- Completed TB test

24 Jan 2026- Paid the visa fee, Health surcharge etc. Used 2 different credit cards since my payment was getting blocked. Total was around £3000 ish (I paid in local currency so exact GBP might vary).

25-26 Jan 2026- Uploaded supporting docs. And no, I didn't upload any offer letter since there isn't any.

27 Jan 2026- attended the biometrics appointment and was told to keep my passport with me since they switched to eVisa.

Note: I was also told by the VFS global official that since I had a previous tourist visa, my application might be processed faster. Please note that this is not an official statement by the home office.

28 Jan 2026- Received the eVisa. Made the UKVI account and linked it to passport.

Hope it helps other applicants!

Success Story/Timeline Quick (1 month) timeline from the US (Michigan)

Hi everyone! I really enjoyed browsing through other peoples' visa timelines so thought I would share mine here. I graduated Spring 2023 from University of Michigan so was well within my time limit, but was still surprised by how quick the process was. From the very beginning to my visa approval took exactly a month! I'm planning on moving to Edinburgh in mid-January and hoping to find a job when I get there, so I can add any helpful updates here. Happy to answer any questions as well, and if you're living in Edinburgh and looking for friends DM me!

12 November 2025 - ECCTIS approval received

12 November 2025 - booked biometric appointment for December 2 in Detroit

12 November 2025 -  submitted supporting documents to VFS online (every page of passport, diploma, ECCTIS verification, 2 months of bank statements, document checklist)

2 December 2025 - attended biometric appointment in Detroit (physical documents to bring: passport and copy of appointment confirmation letter) DID NOT have to send in my passport (e-visa)

4 December 2025: VISA APPROVAL! Granted entry on or after 1 January 2026, booked flight for 13 January

Success Story/Timeline Successful application + timeline, approved within a day!

Hi all! I've just been approved for the HPI visa with a surprisingly quick turnaround time. Thank you to everybody in this community for helping me out and answering the questions that I had. Here is my timeline, feel free to ask any questions :)

Background: Danish/American dual citizen with a degree from an American university. Applied from Denmark, and did not need to book a biometrics appointment, was able to verify my identity through the UK Immigration: ID Check app.

Timeline:

  • Nov 6, 2025: Submitted Ecctis application
  • Nov 13, 2025: Ecctis application approved and degree verified
  • Dec 15, 2025:
    • Opened the HPI visa application and filled out all the sections
    • Only waiting on an updated bank statement at this point since my previous statement did not show a maintenance of £1270 for 28 days
  • Jan 14, 2026:
    • Received updated bank statement
    • Submitted visa application online
    • Paid application fee & healthcare surcharge
    • Uploaded evidence of financial maintenance via bank statement and screenshot of the Ecctis assessment outcome
  • Jan 15, 2026:
    • HPI visa application approved
    • Received eVisa
  • Jan 31, 2026: Arrival date to the UK

The only strange thing about my application process was that the visa application portal told me "You need to provide evidence that you have at least £0, to support yourself in the UK" despite me not meeting the qualifications to be exempt from proving financial maintenance. I did not want to risk anything, and it appears to be a bug. This is why I waited a month for my updated bank statement to come in before submitting my application.

My advice is to have all your evidence ready to go when you submit the application. You don't need to provide more evidence than they ask for (i.e. uploading your degree as evidence). Thanks again to everybody for the help, and good luck! :)

Success Story/Timeline Successful HPI visa application from Singapore

Hello! I've just collected my passport with my entry clearance visa in it, so I thought to share more about my application timeline and additional tips (and also throw yet another Singapore application post into the mix).

Background

I'm a Singapore citizen who graduated from NUS with a bachelor's degree in Jun 2019, and I've been working for a little over 5 years in the tech industry since graduation. I haven't found a job in the UK at the time of writing, and I'm planning to go there in Sep or Oct to collect my BRP while sending out applications in the meantime.

Timeline

16 Jan 2024: Requested for a Certification Letter from NUS stating that the medium of instruction for my degree was English

19 Jan 2024: Received Certification Letter from NUS

20 Jan 2024: Submitted Ecctis application for the 'Visas and Nationality (High Potential Individual with English Proficiency)' service. Paid GBP 217.50 / SGD 379.40 for the service.

23 Jan 2024: Received an email from Ecctis saying that my application was successfully completed. Downloaded a document containing both my Academic Qualification Level Statement and English Language Proficiency Statement from their portal.

23 Jun 2024: Submitted my HPI visa application. Paid SGD 3,693.49 for the Immigration Health Surcharge, and SGD 1,467 for the visa application fee. There was no option to pay in GBP, and the healthcare surcharge could only be paid in full.

By 30 Jun 2024: Uploaded all the necessary documents to the VFS portal. These include: copy of my passport, copy of my degree certificate, Certification Letter to prove the level of English required, personal bank statement for May 2024 proving the minimum funds required, Ecctis statements, and the document checklist you'll be asked to download upon submitting your HPI visa application.

1 Jul 2024: Biometrics appointment at VFS Centre in Singapore. Bring along your passport and a printed copy of your appointment confirmation letter.

1 Jul 2024: Visa application was forwarded to UKVI

4 Jul 2024: Received a decision letter regarding my visa application from UKVI, which has been successful

5 Jul 2024: Collected my passport from VFS Centre

Visa validity periods

HPI visa: 21 Sep 2024 - 21 Sep 2026

Entry clearance visa (90-day vignette): 21 Sep 2024 - 20 Dec 2024

Additional notes

  • The 5-year deadline to apply for the HPI visa is specific to your date of graduation from an eligible university, not the month. E.g. if the graduation date stated on your degree certificate is 31 Jul 2019, then you should submit your application by 30 Jul 2024 (though I wouldn't risk putting it off until that late).
  • Don't upload more documents to the VFS portal than necessary. I only uploaded 1 month's worth of bank statements. Also make sure that none of your documents are password-protected.
  • My visa start date is the same as my planned arrival date (that I stated in my application). As a rule of thumb, make sure that your planned arrival date is no more than 90 days after your application date.

And there you go – the application process was surprisingly smooth, and it took just 11 days to receive a decision from UKVI after submitting my application. Feel free to ask any questions you may have about the process and I'll try my best to help. And if you're already in the UK, I'd love to connect to discuss renting and job hunting.

Thanks and best of luck to everyone who's planning to apply!

Success Story/Timeline Visa approved 24 hours after biometric appointment!

US citizen/passport, San Francisco

Had my VFS biometric appointment on Wednesday December 3, and heard from UKVI the next day.

I was honestly shook, given the window they communicate is 15 business days (which would have been Christmas Eve) I already was resigned to hearing after the holidays. Looks like Christmas came early for me!

Success Story/Timeline Successful and fast timeline from Canada

Sharing this for future applicants! I'm Canadian and graduated in May 2021

DISCLAIMER: I already applied for my ECCTIS verification back in 2024, so I didn't include it here because I had it way before this application.

  • Aug 20 - Received a job offer in the UK for a start date in early October
  • Aug 25 - Submitted my online application and booked a biometric appointment for Sept 2 in Toronto (there were lots of available slots, even the same day, but the earliest I could do it was Sept 2). I did not pay for priority services or any additional services.
  • Sept 2 - Biometric appointment at 10 AM and took around 1 hour. Brought my passport, checklist, and appointment QR code.
  • Sept 2 - Received an email from VFS around 6 pm that my application was sent to UKVI
  • Sept 5 - Received the email from UKVI that my application was successful
  • Sept 8 - Received the email from VFS saying that my passport is ready for pickup
  • Sept 9 - Picked up my passport!

I haven't registered for the e-visa just yet, so I will update this post when I do.

UPDATE: My e-visa was instantly ready when I registered. I was immediately able to generate a share code and pass a right-to-work background check.

Feel free to ask any questions!

Success Story/Timeline Visa start date and entering early

Got approved for a HPI visa recently; with a job offer starting on Jan 5th. I believe I had entered my preferred start date on the visa as a week or two before to get settled in and find housing, but my visa got assigned with start date of 01/05.

Wondering if I was allowed to enter the UK before that Jan 5th date, maybe as a tourist? But then do I have to exit the country? Thanks for the help

Success Story/Timeline Successful HPI Visa Application From India - Timeline

I do not have a job offer. Starting my hunt now. I am not sure what to expect, but here goes nothing. Wish me luck!

17/06/2025 : Ecctis submitted
23/06/2025 : Ecctis verification successful
I had a work engagement for a month abroad so didn't apply right away.
05/08/2025 : Completed online visa application
8/08/2025 : Biometric appointment at VFS Global
8/08/2025 : Visa application notification email from the UK saying it had been forwarded to home office.
13/08/2025 : Received successful application email

It was actually really easy. Make sure you get your tuberculosis test if you're from one of the listed countries. Finish ECCTIS early and also make sure to have the appropriate amount of savings for as long as you can (I had more so even if it dipped I was in the clear!)

Success Story/Timeline Job Hunt Update / Some Lessons Learned

I (M 31) received my HPI visa in Feb after a pretty quick application process then moved out to London from NYC the first week of April. I had been recruiting in my field for several months hoping to land something prior to coming over but no dice. Fast forward to now and I finally have a few options that are even open to sponsoring me long term. A few things I learned through the job hunt in case it’s helpful:

  • Probably obvious, but it was definitely much easier to recruit once I got to the UK. I work in the finance / professional services field and had good convos while still in the US, but all of them were basically waiting to see me make the jump to take me seriously. That being said, it still wasn’t immediate. Had to network hard to lay the groundwork before landing and then a lot more once I arrived
  • Once I got over here, I found it was really effective to frame the HPI as basically “I’ve knocked down the biggest obstacle and cost issue for you with the visa situation - I’m already here. After a probationary period, are you open to sponsoring me?” Most were - they all just said they didn’t want to deal with the perceived complexity of it while I was abroad still
  • The HPI visa actually gives a good amount of protection vs a skilled worker visa so I don’t think it’s cut and dry to switch over immediately. For example, I negotiated a switch over to a skilled worker after 6 months on the job in case the job turns out to not be what I want. I didn’t want to be trapped and held captive because I’m now beholden to them. The HPI gives us flexibility, even if we can’t start counting the time towards permanent residence

Success Story/Timeline Successful Application from USA - Extremely Quick Timeline

Well, this was quite the whirlwind, but I just got my approval this morning and figured I'd share my very, very quick timeline for anyone feeling stressed about having left things to the last minute.

I was a May 20th, 2020 graduate and, like many, I wanted to push this as long as possible to maximize my time, but I was not fully aware of the ECCTIS of it all and submitted that much later than I would have liked to had I known better. Despite that, it all worked out!

  • 5/5: Submitted ECCTIS
  • 5/8: ECCTIS contacts my university, same day I receive a message from ECCTIS that they "received confirmation from your awarding institution that the presented award is genuine" and my application is now "In Progress"
  • 5/9-5/20: No word from ECCTIS, I sent multiple messages letting them know my deadline, general panic and dread
  • 5/20: ECCTIS approved, visa application submitted (I had been working on this in parallel while waiting for ECCTIS), made appointment for biometrics and attended the same day (I live in NYC and my center had a lot of appointments available)
  • 5/22: Visa application successful email

I also made several mistakes along the way that could have been avoided had I not been rushing. For example, I realized AFTER paying the IHS fees but BEFORE paying the application fees that I had some incorrect dates on my application regarding my past travel to the UK, and I had left the "ECCTIS Reference Number" blank. Turns out, no changes can be made at all after you pay IHS fees, but you can't cancel the application and start over until you've paid the application fees. Ultimately, I decided I didn't have time to do that and didn't want to part with multiple thousands of $$$ while waiting for a refund from the previous app. I opted to attach a Letter of Corrections in my document upload, outlining all of the mistakes and correcting them. This clearly worked since I'm now approved! :)

Big, big thanks to everyone on this thread who answered my many questions and kept me sane during this process. Here to return the favor if anyone currently applying has q's!

Success Story/Timeline Success Story: Secured Job Before HPI + Timeline

Hi everyone! Thank you all for sharing your success stories; I've learned a lot from each of you. I’d like to pay it forward by sharing my own experience, and I hope it will be helpful.

Background:

Since the HPI visa is quite expensive for my budget, my goal was to secure a job first before applying for the visa. I applied primarily through LinkedIn and company career sites, which worked well for me. I always informed employers that I didn’t yet hold the visa but would apply as soon as I received an offer (only one company rejected me due to this). I work in tech, specifically in fraud analytics (4 YOE), which helped me stand out due to my specialized experience. Overall, it took me 2 months to get an offer and about 2 weeks to complete the visa application process. I’ll be starting my job in London in mid-September!

Job Application Stats:

  • Jobs Applied: 100 (starting mid-June 2024)
  • Interviews: 4 companies, total 8 interviews (July - August 2024)
  • Offers Received: 2 companies (mid-August 2024)

HPI Visa Timeline:

  • 21 June: Paid for ECCTIS (I’m from a non-English speaking country but studied in the US, so I applied for the HPI without English Proficiency)
  • 25 June: ECCTIS completed the verification
  • 17 August: Completed the application form, paid for the Priority Visa
  • 19 August: Completed the TB test
  • 20 August: Biometrics collected at VFS office
  • 22 August: Received the Non-Straightforward email
  • 28 August: Received email that the passport had been dispatched
  • 29 August: Received the passport with the vignette!

Personal Tips:

  • Be communicative and transparent with employers if you don’t have the visa yet.
  • I purchased a UK phone number to include on my CV and used my friend's address as well. I also added the following statement on my CV: "UK Work Authorization: High Potential Individual visa (no sponsorship required)."
  • Apply selectively to jobs that match your profile, rather than randomly.
  • Cold applications (e.g., LinkedIn, career sites) still work! I had no success reaching out directly to people.
  • Purchase the Priority Visa! This was crucial for me, as I didn’t want to risk waiting 3 weeks or getting the visa before securing a job. June to September is a peak period, and my country is known for long processing times for UK visas.
  • One of the most stressful moments was receiving the Non-Straightforward (NSF) email, but fortunately, my visa was still approved within the expected timeline of 5 working days. As long as you don’t receive a follow-up email requesting additional documents, you should be fine. IMO, they send the NSF email to buy time in case they can’t meet the Priority Visa timeline.

Feel free to reach out if you need any help!
