Rants/Raves Why not just rename this subreddit to r/wehatetallahassee because i have never seen a single person say a positive thing

I have been here for a year, really enjoy the city, having a great time. Tons to do, food is mediocre but cheap, housing is cheap, gas is cheap. On the whole i'm saving tons of money with how cheap everything is. The parks are clean and nice, the weather is beautiful the people are so damn nice.

Does this subreddit do anything but whine about the city and call it awful? Good lord.

Rants/Raves A third of Gadsden elementary students did not show up to school today

1.9k Upvotes

I was speaking to a woman in Quincy today who’s daughter is a teacher out there. She says that 99/300 students did not come to school today and that they are all Hispanic children. Presumably they are afraid of ICE coming for them. Obviously if this continues it will be devastating for the kid’s’ education but also the school system, which I believe is paid per student. If this is happening here I imagine it’s certainly happening in other counties/states. What a shame, this place sucks. Rant over.

Rants/Raves QUIT DRIVING LIKE PSYCHOS

some crazy ass bitch seriously nearly hit me walking through the cross walk on capital circle. i had the goddamn light to walk but she just speeds as she's turning, swerves out of the way at the last second, and has the nerve to honk at me when i have the GODDAMN RIGHT OF WAY.

if you're turning right and there's cars going straight on the same road you're on that means pedestrians have the cross wall and therefor the right of way.

entitled assholes.

Rants/Raves Creating a Friend Group

I went to really, really nice dinner with a really awful group. They didn’t pick up on the ambiance of the restaurant being QUIET and intimate, and they were really disrespectful to the waitstaff and talked poorly about the food because it was from another culture. I would try to explain the food (it’s not my culture, but I love learning about other people’s cultures, especially food, so I knew a little something) and they didn’t care, and just laughed and made weird jokes about how it’s pronounced. I made the reservation, and I got a really amazing hook-up from the owner with it. It was incredibly embarrassing, and I felt that it reflected badly on me. Thankfully, they are not MY friends, as we were all celebrating a mutual friend’s birthday (she was the only person I was friends with). That dinner made me realize something, though. The group didn’t even like each other, they just wanted an excuse to grab a nice dinner. That’s fair, but I think it could be better than that.

The point of this post is that I really want to curate a friend group in Tallahassee. One that understands basic decorum, that can appreciate other cultures, and is built on mutual respect. I recently cut my work hours, and I finally have free time. Loads of it. I don’t mind doing things by myself, but I really enjoy sharing joy and the good things in life with other people. In this group, we would plan excursions and activities and do them together. Basically, the goal is to enrich each other’s lives with experiences and a shared love of life.

A little about me:
I’m a 22 year old Hispanic woman, and I’m a sociology major. I’m in a very committed relationship, so no weirdos please. I am very, very 420 friendly. I am also on the spectrum, and I am very blunt and straightforward. The things I like to do include walking nature trails, casual photography, craft workshops, going to markets and culture festivals. I also love trying new local restaurants and experiences. I am super interested in food blogging or some sort of content creation in that area. I love giving great reviews for the places that I try, and I really enjoy promoting local small businesses. I also enjoy writing, if you couldn’t tell. Finally, I love television shows! Right now, I’m in a reality television phase. I love talking about a show that I’m watching, and psycho-analyzing the entire cast. I am a professional yapper!

What type of people I’m looking for:
I’m looking for like-minded people in my age range. People who are empathetic, honest and care about the people around them. You definitely must be 420 friendly, LGBTQ friendly, and anti-racist.
The point of this group is to actually do things. Please be open to trying restaurants, going on walks in nature, and going to local events. Additionally, I really want the people in this group to be supportive beyond that, and aim to create real, lasting friendships. Nothing else matters. You can be quiet or outgoing, you can be a goofball or you can be a serious person. You can have big dreams or you can aim to make it through the day. Come as you are.

If you’re struggling to find your niche in Tallahassee, and if I don’t sound like a complete psycho to you, please drop a comment with your age and something you really want to do in Tallahassee. You can also message me this info if you’re not comfortable commenting. I will be creating a discord group for this little project of mine. If you’ve even read all of this, you’re already welcome to join! Thank you guys for your time!

Rants/Raves Local grieving an unrecognizable city

What has happened to this place? In the past few years the traffic has seemed to triple. It’s out of control - wrecks, light running, aggressive and aggressively fast drivers - and all of this nonstop everywhere. I don’t recognize this city, and I don’t want to live here anymore.

I am a local in my late 30s and raising young children. All of this makes me so sad. I don’t see the police force nor the sheriffs doing anything about it. No one speed checking. Anywhere. In fact, yesterday I witnessed a lineup of people running a red light via the turn lane; the last runner was a sheriff. No one seems to care.

I don’t feel safe. I don’t feel my kids are safe. My aging parents are not safe. Every time I get behind the wheel, I say a prayer and hope that the day will guide us home safely. I’ve lived here my whole life though, and uprooting in order to live in a place where people are decent at this point just feels like something else to mourn.

Is it possible that it could change? Someone give me some hope please. What do us caring citizens have to do in order for change to happen? I worry we are past the point of return - infrastructures haven’t updated and expanded as the population has expanded, and I don’t think our roads or governing bodies can handle the swell.

How much money has the City spent on these? I swear a see a new one going up almost every day. How much money do you think we'll lose once they're inevitably phased out?

Florida has one of the broadest public records laws in the country; my personal opinion is once someone with enough money demands the public records, they'll be done away with the same way they've been done away with in other states.

But also, there's nothing quite like knowing Big Brother is actively monitoring your every movement, and you're paying for your own surveillance state 🤡

Edited to change "fazed" to "phased" because I remembered how to spell.

It sucks so much, I hate pots with a passion. There is no reason for it to be this insanely loud. Yeah, I understand nightclubs are loud, I used to live right beside the airport, but this is a whole other level. I am actually going insane from sleep deprivation and am having constant migraines. It will be this loud until 2 am. I have had pictures fall from my wall because my whole room vibrates.

Im not trying to say “lets get rid of pots!!!”, all I wish is it could be slightly quieter, at this point idk how its even enjoyable to anyone inside. There are lots of apartments all around pits with thousands of people trying to live their lives. It sucks so much coming home from work after a long day just wanting some rest, but hearing the music, knowing I wont get any sleep till around 3 am, and then have to be up at 7 am. I don’t have enough money to just simply find a new place and move”, nor do most people.

Btw, image is the noise level INSIDE my apartment.

Rants/Raves Who are buying all the $750k homes in Tallahassee???

Used to see these homes for like $400k and thought that if I worked hard enough I could afford a place like that and raise a family here. Prices of these homes seem to have doubled over the past decade and I'm routinely seeing homes on the Northside selling for eye watering amounts.

A responsible household would need to be making nearly $300k+ annually to afford these homes and I have not seen hardly any jobs in Tallahassee paying $150k for a married couple to afford that.

Just another rant about the state of our housing crisis.

How transitory the population is here.

I’ve lived here for around a year and I’ve only reached the point where I have a good amount of friends somewhat recently. And more than half of them have moved or are planning on moving soon.

People make up so much of what I love about this place. This is such a bummer.

Rants/Raves Visitors to Wakulla Springs: Please be respectful!

Hey, y’all! Just wanted to jump on here as an employee of the park to say something.

From the bottom of our hearts, we love having visitors to the park. Most folks are honest, respectful, and super fun to talk with/answer questions for.

Unfortunately though, there are a select few (especially college students for whatever reason) who want to ruin the experience for themselves, the staff, and the other visitors.

It’s not just verbal disrespect, though that is certainly an issue too- it’s not following rules put in place for their own safety. It’s drinking (which is prohibited in state parks anyways) beyond their limits and putting themselves at risk. It’s physical altercations. It’s harassment. It’s littering. It’s (unfortunately literally) defecating on the floors and walls with no care for the health and safety of whoever has to clean it up.

Listen. We want everyone to enjoy their time here. It’s an incredibly beautiful place and we want it to stay beautiful for years to come. It’s also just a really fun afternoon away from Tallahassee and we all understand you want to have a good time. But you have to remember that employees are people too, and more importantly: this is a wildlife preserve and a very important conservation area. The rules are there for a reason, and you will be trespassed if you don’t follow them.

For those who want to come and have a good day at Wakulla, I ask that you keep these things in mind: 1). Be patient. It’s the middle of the summer. Wait times are long to get into the park, the swimming area closes for lightning storms almost every afternoon, and people get crabby when it’s hot outside. 2). Please pick up/clean up after yourself, or if you don’t have the tools to clean up your mess, have the decency to tell us so we can take care of it early and keep it hygienic for the rest of the guests. 3). If you have a question, please ask a ranger or lodge employee rather than assuming. 4). If you go to Cherokee Sink, please do not park on the sides of the highway or the dirt road leading in. Park in designated spaces only or go elsewhere for the day. We don’t want to ruin your fun, but if an ambulance needs to get in for any reason we need to have the road clear.

I am not an official spokesperson for the park, just an employee who cares about its future.

Rants/Raves Check your receipts

Post image
137 Upvotes

Update: I stopped by and spent about 30 minutes with the General Manager and Team Lead explaining the math. I ended up with a refund and 30 minutes of frustration.

I stopped at Jack in the Box this morning, grabbed some breakfast sandwiches (we enjoyed them), and was told that they would be $16 and change or something like that. I realized that they didn’t add the extra cheese and egg I requested so I mentioned it. The person messed with the register and looked to be having trouble so she looked over and said it was the original price. I handed over my card and grabbed my food and receipt and went on my merry way. Delicious. Then I noticed the charge on my phone and checked the receipt. I was waaaaayyyy overcharged. I haven’t been able to get back by to get it fixed yet but figured I’d warn folks that Jack is glitching.

They’ve been doing this for years when they don’t want to deliver your package. It would be 1000% better if they didn’t scan the thing as being out for delivery so you don’t wait all day just for them to mark it right before their shift ends.

Rants/Raves Walmart Chickens

Went to Walmart a little while ago and saw a nice lady and her kids, beating through the bushes, snatching up the parking lot chickens' chicks and hurling them in the back of her Tesla.

I get it, they are technically free range but c'mon. I don't know why that got me so mad.

Am I wrong?

You were 1 foot from people's bumper while they were already going 10 over, but you got to the red light at the same time. You deserved my thumb's down of disapproval.

Also weren't you supposed to turn left? Because you turned right after you changed lanes to get mad at me.

You're the problem with drivers in this town.

Rants/Raves College Kids

When the heck did college kids get bolder and more stupid? I know it’s pretty much the same old story but I work a graveyard shift and I’m trying to leave and go to work and the freaking college kids are mass exodus-ing from a bar, disregarding walking signs, walking in between cars flying down the road like drunk Frogger, and they freaking circled my car and wouldn’t let me drive when the light turned. I honked and that honestly seems to summon more of them. Eventually like 15 of them just circled around my car, linked hands, and I couldn’t move without hitting them. Frankly, what the hell? Just go home you drunk toddlers. Where did personal safety go? Or common sense? I went to college, I went out, but is it just me or did this new crowd of freshmen just get dumber?

Rants/Raves Top 5 bars in town

This is my own personal list, definitely has changed a lot through my time being here.

  1. Finnegan's Wake - Just an overall great spot, best drinks, best environment, always got some good sports on the TV, and the foosball table. Only wish it was a larger spot.

  2. Leon Pub - I am sure this is a lot further down the list for most people. But maybe it’s just me and my friends, such a great place to go with some friends. They also have the best selection of beer in Tally, you can explore the globe with beers there.

  3. Kavakaze - I know it’s not a traditional bar, they do not sell alcohol here, thought of not even putting it since it isn’t really a bar. But it has been a great place for my friends and I to meet, especially on weeknights.

  4. Liberty Bar - I’d say a little too expensive sometimes, but definitely a great place to go especially to get some snacks while on a night out. They got such a great late night menu and have quality cocktails.

  5. Poor Paul’s Poorhouse - Would’ve been 1 or 2, but really don’t like the new ownership and the new bartenders are not too great either. But I will say they kept some of the Aura they had before. I do like the added poker table and the new layout makes sense and uses the space better.

Let me know what you think of my list, and what your list is!

Rants/Raves Bus system here is straight buns

Tell me why my bus was an hour late because it broke down and CK STELLE DIDNT KNOW!? I waited almost an hour this morning waiting for this bus and kept getting told “we don’t know what’s going on we can’t get in contact” only to find out when the bus shows up that it broke down and they had to fix it. An old lady waited an hour in the cold for this bus like bro that’s insane. AND WHY IS IT ALSO ALWAYS LATE! It’s supposed to come at 5:05 and it comes at like 5:13 and because of traffic and stops I’m not getting to the bus station till like 5:47 which means my bus to get home has left and now I gotta pay out of my pocket for an uber to get home which wouldn’t happen if the bus would just arrive on time! Isn’t that your job?! To drive a bus and arrive on time!

Rants/Raves Is it just me or is the gym scene terrible here?

I cannot seem to find a gym that I like here even though I have tried many. Ive been training for 10+ years now and I mostly do free weights, so PF is not an option. I’m currently at American Fitness over by bannerman and I guess it’s fine, but the clientele is much older and seemingly very conservative and I’ve felt weird at times there as a woman. I tried momentum and they accidentally stole my ID and gave me hell when I tried to get it back, plus the owners are kind of pervs I’ve heard. Premiere seems great, but is expensive and crowded. I’ve been hesitant to try any commercial gyms here because I’ve gotten so used to private, any advice? Is this just me??
