Wendy’s and I will die on this hill

38

u/Inigomntoya 10d ago

It's good, if it's from a good location.

Unfortunately the franchise owner around here gives zero shits about people.

So their service is terrible. Many nights they close down completely because employees just walk out.

And if you order anything more than a frosty, the food is mediocre on their best day.

9

u/TheMightyHornet 10d ago

This. The quality control of various Wendy’s franchises has fallen off the table. Also their fries taste like cardboard.

5

u/ernest7ofborg9 10d ago

Remember when they took pride in their fries and even had a huge advertising campaign about it?

Yeah, neither do they.

1

u/WintergreenSoldier 9d ago

Pepperidge Farm remembers

2

u/treetop62 9d ago

I actually make the fries for Wendy's (well do quality Control for them) and the fries we cook in the lab at the plant are way better than the ones you get at the actual Wendy's, im not sure why though, maybe just fresher?

We also do bk, KFC, and popeyes

2

u/headrush46n2 9d ago

Are you fuckers the reason KFC doesn't have steak fries anymore?

1

u/treetop62 9d ago

We're a potato processing factory so dont blame that on us! Haha

1

u/TheMightyHornet 9d ago

Two questions: 1. can we have Yellow Box Wendy’s fries back? 2. Please put the barbecue sauce back to the way it was like 10 years ago before it was this heavily corn syruped garbo.

You seem like the dude who can either make this happen, or knows the people who can.

1

u/treetop62 9d ago

I dont think we have much say in that sadly, we just process the potatoes into fries for the different chains.. and also sell retail fries in the grocery store, you probably know the name of the company. Im curious though, what were the yellow box Wendy's fries??

1

u/TheMightyHornet 9d ago

They were goated. The only fast food fries that would rival McDonald’s.

1

u/treetop62 9d ago

Ohh those ones aren't skin-on fries, now they are made with the skins still on, that might be why they taste different

1

u/TheMightyHornet 9d ago

It’s, yeah, it’s rough.

1

u/AwarenessForsaken568 9d ago

It confuses me that corporate Wendys isn't able to reign this in. Like they absolutely know which locations have awful reviews and complaints. Why do they do nothing about it? I'm not sure how the relationship between corporate and a franchiser works, but there has to be a way for corporate to kick someone to the curb right?

Granted every chain food location has this issue, but I find that Wendys by far has it the worst. A good location is at the top of the fast food world. A bad location is at the very bottom, and there are A LOT of bad locations.

3

u/dplans455 10d ago

This is so true. We have the good Wendy's 4 miles from out house and and the bad Wendy's the same distance in the opposite direction. Who owns the restaurant matters. The good Wendy's is always good. You could go there at midnight and you're getting fresh hot fries. Meanwhile the bad Wendy's you go at lunch time and somehow you get served cold fries that taste like they're 3 days old.

2

u/lman777 10d ago

Agreed. Unfortunately I haven't had a good Wendy's burger in California in several years. Most disappointing burger chain for me now. The burger sizes feel like 30% smaller than they were pre-Covid. But they still charge like $10. I don't know how they are still in business. I like to imagine that there are still good Wendy's franchises out there. But they absolutely suck here.

2

u/WeBackYeah 10d ago

Wendy's and Burger King can be great, but I feel like most of their locations are rundown shitholes.

1

u/HarpoMarx87 10d ago

This is really the right answer. I had family in Columbus growing up, so I got to go to the original Wendy's a bunch of times while visiting, and it was really very good. Dave Thomas clearly had a soft spot for the location, and it kind of doubled as a Wendy's museum (complete with memorabilia, old ad campaigns, etc.). My long-running theory was that they still had a lot of the better equipment from when the place was founded, since the original plan had been to be a bit more upscale.

Unfortunately, that location closed after Thomas died (and the science museum across the street closed, which clearly removed a huge chunk of their business), and while I've been to several decent ones since, none have quite measured up - and quite a few other locations are lousy. And needless to say the quality overall has declined over the past couple decades, though I'd still take it over McDonald's in a heartbeat.

1

u/General_Platypus771 9d ago

Yeah I used to love Wendy’s (when I lived in a different state), but it seems like since moving to my current city, they all suck.

1

u/strype27 8d ago

Canadian wendys

u/-Im-A-W1zard- 10d ago

Wendy's is shockingly good

1

u/MuckRaker83 9d ago

I'm still upset they got rid of the bourbon bacon burger

-2

u/Lovethiskindathing 10d ago

And still affordable!

7

u/megamick99 10d ago

Where are you guys buying? A burger is 10 bucks at Wendy's and now you dont even get Romaine lettuce.

2

u/Lovethiskindathing 10d ago

I'm in the Midwest and we were at a nearby city today and I got mine for $6 for the combo or it would have been $3.50 for just the sandwich. The jalapeno burger is $10 so I'm definitely not saying they don't have pricey ones too, but for a basic burger I'm happy with my JBC and baked potato if I'm going to fast food it! Mine had lettuce too so I'm so sorry about yours :( that sucks

1

u/airinato 10d ago

Please give state instead of 'midwest'. The term means nothing as it was redefined several times and people that live in the what is obviously eastern part of the country think they live in the 'midwest'. Talking about you Chicago.

2

u/flaminhotcheeto 10d ago

Michigan is the Midwest and I will die on this hill

1

u/airinato 10d ago

It's called North Central corridor now to match the reality that we went further west 200 years ago.

I'll die on the hill that the Midwest are only great plains states.  If you have trees, you aren't the Midwest.

1

u/flaminhotcheeto 10d ago

Some Texans consider themselves Midwest. That's crazy. Trying to not be The South while being The South in all aspects

1

u/Lovethiskindathing 10d ago

Idk what happened with my first comment so I am going to try again!

I'm not comfortable with that, but I agree with this structuring of it and it's how my family in multiple of these states feel about it. Doesn't make us correct, but it is what we refer to as Midwest.

1

u/jonny24eh 10d ago

I don't want any lettuce on any burger, so that's fine.

I always get either a Baconator or a Son of Baconator.

Greasy, yes, but I buy those when i WANT a greasy burger.

1

u/santahat2002 10d ago

But I do want lettuce, and the change is awful.

2

u/tommynestcepas 10d ago

I know they're still rare in the UK so this is to be expected, but it's REALLY expensive for us

2

u/Lovethiskindathing 10d ago

:( I'm sorry to hear that

1

u/DoubleManufacturer28 9d ago edited 9d ago

It's really not? £9.89 for a dave's double combo meal is really not that bad. There's also the biggies meal for £7.99 which is Dave's single - nuggets combo. They also do bottomless drinks when eating in. It's cheaper than Burger King and way better than McDonald's

11

u/MikeTony713 10d ago

Dave's Double is just the perfect burger, the right amount of meat with everything else ratio. It doesn't get any better than that

15

u/paulhags 10d ago

Wendy’s died with Dave Thomas, unfortunately. Their burger is a shadow of its former self and the “new chicken sandwich” is gross.

12

u/academicthrows 10d ago

I haven't noticed a change in their burgers for decades. The fries, on the other hand, they fucking ruined with that stupid campaign that resulted in bullshit SYSCO overfried crispy-on-the-outside garbage. And are you saying they fucked w/ the spicy chicken? Because that really is a perfect sandwich.

2

u/megamick99 10d ago

They changed the patty I feel like a few years ago, and it's been shit since. Also no Romaine lettuce.

1

u/CrazedRhetoric 10d ago

Yeah. I hate the shred-uce.

1

u/Lovethiskindathing 10d ago

I'm sad about the fries :( the JBC is my #1 when it's ff burgers but the fries are like #8. Buuuuuut the baked potatoes are typically good! Only had a couple shriveled up nasty experiences and they weren't at our normal Wendy's, so I think that can definitely make a difference too

2

u/academicthrows 10d ago

Why they would mess with those fries is beyond me but it must have been a cost savings. No flash campaign is worth that loss.

1

u/Lovethiskindathing 10d ago

Yeah :( they're limp, grainy, and soggy compared to how they used to be

1

u/kdawgster1 10d ago

You are right. And yet, it’s still better than McDonalds and most other fast food burgers. The burgers are however much worse than they used to be

1

u/Sextus_Rex 10d ago

I KNEW they changed the chicken sandwich. I picked it up last month after the dentist and thought maybe the flouride was just making it taste weird. Got it again a few days ago and it was still gross.

0

u/namastex 10d ago

Nothing "died" or even changed with Wendys burgers since he died. They still get fresh beef from local sources and they never freeze their meat with truck deliveries every 2 days. Hard not to deliver on that front, they have a system that has worked forever now. As someone who has worked at half of these places and learned about the others, Wendy's is the only place that doesn't freeze their beef. All the other companies are too greedy not to freeze their beef and they don't have systems in place to rotate out their aging beef. They cook their beef on a flat surface grill, salt them and then flip them once. Once they hit a certain refrigerator date they chop them patties up for their chili. You quite literally can't do better than that at a basic level. If you think a burger is better it's because they use higher quality beef or use more ingredients.

3

u/DivineCurrent 10d ago

I love Wendy’s, but the buns suck now in my opinion. The bread tasted higher quality a few years ago.

2

u/Stanwich79 10d ago

They made a baconator that slides down the throat. Too good.

3

u/RealityOk9823 10d ago

Weird hill to die on, but OK. They used to be the absolute best fast food burgers, but really went downhill for a long time there. Seem to be getting a little better lately.

3

u/VAVA_Mk2 10d ago

90s Wendy's was GOAT

1

u/RealityOk9823 10d ago

Oh hell yeah.

1

u/MariaValkyrie 10d ago

Wendy's buns used to be similar 5 Guys, and I think they were one of the last major chains to enshittify them.

1

u/mattgoldey 10d ago

Weird hill to die on, but at least you're dead.

1

u/derek_32999 10d ago

Yeah, as far as something similarly priced goes, I can't see how I could pass up on Wendy's. Shake Shack and five guys shouldn't even be on this list. I will be stopping by Culver's and trying them out soon. Burger King gave me heartburn for years anytime I would try it even though I like their fries pretty darn good. Maybe I need to give them another revisit as well?

1

u/derycksan71 10d ago

Jr bacon cheeseburger dipped in a chocolate frosty 🤌

1

u/secret_identity_too 10d ago

Wendy's is my favorite fast food -- even if every single Wendy's you go to is the absolute slowest fast food you've ever gotten. Their fries and Frosty's are unmatched.

1

u/Sudden-Motor-7794 10d ago

and you will be nauseated for 2-3 minutes after eating the burger before you die

1

u/Herbdontana 10d ago

My local Wendy’s used to be good but it’s fallen off a cliff. Used to be the best fast food place around. Last time I went, I was the only person there and waited almost a half hour for the food. Everything was cold to the touch the moment we got it. The few times prior, I got sick of waiting and never got my food. Such a bummer, because they used to be really good

1

u/pixelprophet 10d ago

JBC + Frosty & fries for diping

1

u/Amuso 10d ago

Wendy's fucked up by not making the pretzel bacon pub burger permanent. Best fast food burger I've ever had.

1

u/strings_bells 10d ago

Completely agree.. their beef tastes different than other fastfood places. It actually tastes like beef. I heard they use fresh beef and they don't freeze it..

1

u/SSOMGDSJD 10d ago

The biggie bag slaps tbh

1

u/ArugulaAnnual1765 10d ago

Nah they got rid of the leaf lettuce and replaced it with the garbage iceberg lettuce - never going there again

1

u/mikenesser 9d ago

Don’t know how nobody mentioned it until you. Getting rid of leaf lettuce was disgraceful.

1

u/MedLink_Official 9d ago

I've tried Wendy's in Toronto’s airport, it’s great

1

u/controversialangles 9d ago

I was surprised to get them today and realize they changed their buns to sweet potato. Definitely put them back in my top fast food places

1

u/Radicalness3 9d ago

How is this so low.

Wendy's feels by far the freshest out of the standard fast food burgers.

1

u/Osama_Bin_Logan 9d ago

Why did they remove the bourbon bacon burger 😭😭😭😭

1

u/beaver_mafia56 9d ago

Wendy’s has the best cheese

1

u/CouldBeBetterOrWorse 9d ago

When I go to Wendy's it's for their breakfast potato wedges. Burgers are okay, but those wedges are FIRE.

1

u/headrush46n2 9d ago

yeah you will, from blocked arteries. Wendy's has sucked for a long time and it keeps getting worse.

I stopped going when they changed the nugget bbq sauce. Used to have a nice savory smokey sauce, the new shit tastes like candy.

1

u/mystic_x_1981 9d ago

Baconator all day everyday

1

u/Klutzy-Act440 9d ago

At one point I would have agreed. Honestly the last several times I went there it was absolutely horrible. Severe quality decline, a few years ago it didn't matter what time you went there was line. Now the drive through is a ghost town. You don't have to wait which is nice, If you don't have to wait at all that shit has probably been marinating under a heat lamp for the last hour. We have In and Out here, the wait time is horrendous the quality is so much better that it is hard not say it is worth the wait.

1

u/Ivara_Prime 9d ago

They have just partnered with Palantir to make sure you die on that hill.

1

u/BradypusGuts 9d ago

I used to think they were best, but after switching to shredded lettuce recently it has completely ruined it.

1

u/Informationlporpoise 9d ago

came here to say the same exact thing - their jr bacon cheeseburger is always the best little burger I ever ate

Never frozen. Don’t know if that matters, but the burgers are great.
