Five Guys and Shake Shack are in a different class. It's more mid range fast food burgers.

I sometimes like to have something like McDonald's. Low end quick and convenient cardboard burger. But objectively, I can't say McDonald's is a better burger than Five Guys or Shake Shack.

This, always said five guys, and would agree shake shack (just recent tried first time) is like Fast Food+

It sits in a middle ground between fast food like BK or McDonald's but not quite sit down chain restaurant level. Nothing beats the quality of a small business burger tho.

I would say five guys is pretty mid even for what it is, still better than the others (aside for shake shack) but they're usually greasy, not much flavor and the bun is always soggy.

I think five guys is better for their fries than burgers and honestly think they're better than McDonald's

I still hold five guys as my favorite, but perhaps I’ll try going to shake shack more often. I’ve been maybe twice, but I don’t recall what the burgers were like.

I do like the buns a bit soggy at five guys, as weird as that might sound. In my opinion, it’s not a real burger if it’s not greasy, and the five guys grease hits different.

Five guys is lumped into fast food because their burgers really aren’t any better than any fast food burgers you might find.

Thank you. Not enough comments pointing this out

Thing is shake shack and five guys aren’t really in the exact same category as the others.

They are considering “fast casual” dining and I’ve even seen like chipotle considered “casual dining “.

Here’s a search summary of the categories

Summary

Fast Food is for when you are on the go and want the quickest, cheapest meal possible.

Fast Casual is for when you want healthier, premium-quality food without paying for a full-service experience.

Casual Dining is for when you want to sit down, socialize, and be waited on in a relaxed environmen

When you get into mid-range though, every city has local spots within that range that are hands down better.

Go cheap or go local imo

Two of the worst burgers of my life, easily in the top two, were from Five Guys. And yes, I’ve ordered Five Guys twice. I was so confused to learn that they’re considered the more ‘premium/artisan’ choice.

Five Guys and Shake Shack are closer to restaurants than fast food. I don't even think most Five Guys have drive thru?

They're hovering the line between fast food and Burger Restaurant

No they aren’t. They are absolutely fast food no different than McDonald’s. The only difference like with shack shake is the quality of food is better.

To be honest, I think Five Guys and Shake Shack make way better / tastier burgers than any decent restaurant I went to (in Europe at least)

Many fast food places don’t have drive thru and they absolutely are not closer to a restaurant. It’s fast food because it is made fast usually in an assembly fashion which these two places are the same as McDonald’s or any other fast food. A restaurant is made to order and usually takes longer to prepare.

You might have a decent five guys near cause I’ve been to many and they absolutely aren’t in a different class. 100% comparable to McDonald’s or any other fast food. I think the difference is Five Guys doesn’t sell lower tier/value items like most other fast food places but McDonald, Burger King, jack in the box all sell burgers of equal or better burgers than Five Guys that are probably still cheaper. Shake Shack though that’s definitely a higher class.

Every 5 Guys I've been too I've been disappointed. I don't know why I keep trying. The fries are especially disappointing. Greasy and limp. You do get a ton of them but I don't know if it makes up for it.

Yeah they are fine but there’s legitimately nothing that sets them apart. I compare it to going to the grocery store and grabbing basic Patty’s, buns and ingredients. Not terrible but not remotely worth the price.
