If money isn't a factor

74

u/TheRealGageEndal 10d ago

Yeah, this is a big issue. Even before inflation went crazy they were too expensive.

I went into one while I was traveling and this was the first food I had seen in a while. I went inside, saw the prices, and turned around to leave. BK was only another 30 miles, I could wait.

It could be the best burger in the world and I wouldn't care. I am not spending $30 on a combo meal.

25

u/spiked88 10d ago

$30 combo? Was this somewhere like California or Vegas?

18

u/Metalheadzaid 10d ago

I'm in AZ, which is medium cost of living. $21.27 for a cheeseburger, smallest fries, and a regular drink.

I will say they do, at least online, offer a $16.69 combo deal for the same items though, which is something I haven't seen (though haven't been to five guys in a minute).

Still, in-n-out is $10.83 for same items...such a steal.

19

u/spiked88 10d ago

Their smallest fries are also massive though. And $21 is not $30.

15

u/fuckedfinance 10d ago

$21 is not $30

u/FutureComplaint 10d ago

A little cheeseburger, small fries, and a drink cost me $18 in the DC area.

2

u/couchperson137 10d ago

five guys is 13.99 for a combo i can barely finish in the grand ol state if nj. considering a big mac combo is the same cost and i could eat about 5 of those, 5 guys all day

1

u/candymannequin 10d ago

and dangit - in-n-out's burgers are just as good. the fries not so much. i know it's a very specific and acquired taste

1

u/caninehere 10d ago edited 9d ago

The difference is the small fries at In N Out are ridiculous and way more than enough for two people so you can easily split them.

The fries at In N Out Five Guys on the other hand are garbage and not even worth eating. I'm Canadian so I haven't eaten a lot of American chains' fries to be fair but In N Out's are worse than any I've had.

1

u/daveylu 10d ago

It's because In-N-Out fries are not pre-fried and then frozen before shipping to restaurants, they cut whole potatoes literally right in front of you and then fry it once. Other places get their fries pre-cut, pre-fried, and frozen from their distributor and then fry it again which makes it taste MUCH better.

Basically In-N-Out makes their fries worse by making them fresh and they don't care since their whole thing is cheap + fresh (that's why they own everything and haven't expanded very fast, they need to build a distributing center in places they want to expand before they can build restaurants).

1

u/spiked88 9d ago

Re-read your comment. You said In N Out for both places.

1

u/caninehere 9d ago

I said what I said!!

1

u/PFI_sloth 10d ago

In AZ, got a cheeseburger, fries, and a drink for 14 bucks last week, at the counter.

1

u/Metalheadzaid 10d ago

Online it shows that for the little cheeseburger $13.99, I was comparing the non little which is double patties since that's what most order.

1

u/TekThunder 10d ago

For a good burger and fries, that really ain’t more expensive than the other way shittier competitors lol

2

u/SaltyJake 10d ago

My same question. I live in on of the highest CoL areas in the world and a combo is $15. It’s actually less expensive than McDonald’s.

0

u/TheRealGageEndal 10d ago

Middle of nowhere Virginia. I had just come out of the Appalachians and wanted meat.

8

u/Seadevil07 10d ago

Burger is $12 in VA for Five Guys

3

u/SadTaco12345 10d ago

I live in a HCOL area and they are 14 bucks, this guy is either lying, or quoting the triple burger double bacon double cheese price lmao

2

u/spiked88 9d ago

Yeah, I’m thinking he looked at the biggest combo there, added a shake to it, and then rounded up to the nearest 10.

8

u/Adventurous_Elk_4039 10d ago

Iirc they use fresh instead of frozen meat, so there is the price diff.

12

u/Rotorscope 10d ago

So does In-N-Out and their prices are basically the lowest.

5

u/Adventurous_Elk_4039 10d ago

Ah. Wish I had an in-n-out near me then, never had them before.

2

u/caninehere 10d ago

Their burgers are good but overrated imo (still great for the price though). However their fries suck absolute ass. If you ever go just get burgers and avoid the fries.

Some people will say "you gotta get animal style fries though", but sorry, putting disgusting slop on top of bad fries just makes them worse.

2

u/JoeyJuJoe 10d ago

Their plain fries do suck, but there's something about getting the animal-style fry that works. I think it's because of the tasteless fries, you get the tastier flavors of the onions, cheese, and sauce.

2

u/ZzzSleep 10d ago

I tried In-n-out after hearing about great they were for years and found them pretty average personally. Maybe it was hyped up too much for me.

2

u/Drendude 10d ago

In-n-Out is McDonalds: stuck in the 50s aesthetically, modern in terms of food quality (not great).

I went out of my way to try it in LA the one time I was there, and I was extremely underwhelmed.

1

u/Jimisdegimis89 10d ago

Yeah In n Out has kept prices pretty low, if only their fries were better I’d say they are the best bang for your buck for a good burger chainjoint these days.

1

u/fluffykerfuffle3 10d ago

slaughter house out back?

2

u/Adventurous_Elk_4039 10d ago

Conveyor belt system, probably

1

u/peepeebutt1234 10d ago

Five guys patties are also 3.5oz and in n out patties are 2 oz.

1

u/Antique-Ant5557 10d ago

That's in n out.

4

u/Adventurous_Elk_4039 10d ago

Maybe them too, but I checked, and five guys is strictly fresh meat

2

u/Jimisdegimis89 10d ago

I think five guys has to have some pretty variable pricing based on location because it’s literally more expensive for me to go to Burger King and get a similar sized burger and fries than the five guys around here. BK is like $17 for a double whopper a fries while Five guys is about $16.

2

u/GarageStackDev 10d ago

Give me a fucking break. Combos are $12-$18

4

u/Baldur_Blader 10d ago edited 10d ago

I think the difference here though is that BK isn't food. Five guys is a little more expensive than Wendy's. But better. As long as you're not comparing to the value menu

4

u/ellisschumann 10d ago

They actually aren’t that bad. In my area it’s like $7-$8 for just the burger. A lot of the fast food chains are creeping up into that price range.

1

u/Qeltar_ 10d ago

Yeah, this is a big issue. Even before inflation went crazy they were too expensive.

That depends on how many pockets you have to stuff full of peanuts. :)

1

u/kikimaru024 10d ago

How much time & money did you spend to drive 30 miles?

1

u/TheRealGageEndal 9d ago

It was on the way to the hotel, so about 25 minutes and nothing extra.

36

u/fillerupbruther 10d ago

People complaining about the price of Five Guys when Shake Shack is also in this photo. Now THAT is overpriced imo

10

u/willretrn 10d ago

Shake Shack portion sizes put Five Guys on top. If I'm gonna spend that much I might as well be getting a double burger and mountain of fries

1

u/[deleted] 9d ago

[deleted]

1

u/willretrn 9d ago

i'm not getting a mountain of fries or a double burger at shake shack for the price of five guys

0

u/ThisIsMyRedditAcct20 9d ago

Fair. But it’s still better. Downvotes to shit but that’s how I feel. Haven’t been to a Five Guys in maybe 10 years because I found it really rubbish for me what I wanted. I don’t eat burgers often, but when I do, I want them to taste good

2

u/sdhoigtred 10d ago

You gotta work their deals via the app. We regularly get a free sandwich when we spend $10.

Today got a veggie burger, chicken sandwich, fries and large coke. $16.28 and that includes a 10% tip.

5

u/codizer 10d ago

A couple things here:

  1. I honestly don't want to have to get on my phone to order fast food.
  2. Is tipping customary at Shake Shack?

3

u/secret_identity_too 10d ago

I mean... I have the Wendy's app on my phone and every time I go (which is not often, once every three or four months) I have a free large fries offer just waiting for me. So I get nuggets, large fries, and a Frosty for $6 like the old days.

1

u/sdhoigtred 10d ago
  1. Then you'll pay full price.
  2. No idea.

4

u/Electronic_Sky_1413 10d ago

I won’t pay full price, I just won’t eat it lol

2

u/asailor4you 10d ago

Same. If a place has gamified their menu order process then I’m checked out and going somewhere else. I don’t go out all that often and I don’t want to play games when I’m just hungry for something to eat, and I don’t want to walkout of a place feeling like I got taken advantage of because I don’t use their app.

1

u/comcastsupport800 10d ago

Not sure why so many people are against ordering on your phone. Get to order before you go so no waiting. Constant deals on food. I have all the fast food apps and save a ton of money and never have to wait

5

u/ISLITASHEET 10d ago

Not sure why so many people are against ordering on your phone.

Because I don't want 50 different logins.

Because I don't want 50 different apps on my phone.

Most importantly:
Because I understand that these businesses are excessively overcharging everyone to make their users feel like they get a deal. This is only to entice them into overpaying more so that they get the "rewards." They are still making excessive margins on you, even with the rewards. I refuse to encourage this behavior.

2

u/comcastsupport800 10d ago

Don't need 50 different apps just 3 or 4 whatever place you frequent the most. The prices are going to remain whether you go there or not

1

u/marfacza 10d ago

no, you really don't. also, tip? also, 10%?

1

u/sniper91 10d ago

And I like their chicken sandwich more than their burgers (SmokeShack is close, though)

1

u/AcanthisittaWhole216 10d ago

Shake shack is cheaper than 5guys

1

u/Worldly-Customer3963 10d ago

The price complaints make no sense to me. Has anyone seen the prices at McDonald's lately?

1

u/CouldBeBetterOrWorse 9d ago

I've only been to Shake Shack near Times Square. I was very, very drunk. It was amazing.

0

u/ThisIsMyRedditAcct20 10d ago

But Shake Shack tastes so much better. Smaller portions, but whenever I go/went to Five Guys, I build a classic Whataburger and it’s just not as good. Shack Shake is something different

11

u/thePunisher1220 10d ago

I'll gladly pay more for a good burger

2

u/ThenCombination7358 10d ago

At this point just order one to take away at a restaurant. About same price and better

8

u/Adaphion 10d ago

It's not like I eat at Five Guys often (especially considering the nearest one to me is 30 minutes away a city over) but it's the difference between paying $20 (McDonald's) or $30 (Five Guys) for a meal. So I don't really care about the slight extra cost since it isn't all the time.

2

u/xScrubasaurus 10d ago

Yeah, people act like McDonald's is still cheap. Either way it's expensive, but Five Guys is just drastically better.

3

u/Adaphion 10d ago

There's literally a bar near me that specializes in wings and has a hella cheap wing combo (pound of wings, plus fries and drink) on Tuesdays, barely more (even after a 20% tip) than I'd pay for a double quarter pounder combo.

McDonalds, for me at this point, is just what I get when I literally have no other ideas, I want it quick, and I know it'll be consistent (unless I go on a weekend when all the shitass teenagers that constantly fuck up orders are working)

1

u/qmrthw 10d ago

I used to think the same thing, but I had five guys recently in Canada (I hadn't been in a few years) and I was surprised because I had a Bacon cheeseburger (the most expensive burger choice) + "small" fries + refillable drink and the total was $25.17 CAD tax in or a little over 18 USD.
A similar combo at McDonalds would be 20-22$ tax in for a much much worse meal (14.5-16 USD).
Traditionally cheaper fast food like McDonalds and BK has gotten so expensive in Canada that it's not even worth it anymore, it's gotten to the point where five guys isn't even more expensive (you don't have to pig out and take the bacon cheeseburger like I did, lol) and it's just so much better quality.

1

u/Adaphion 10d ago

Yeah... That's my point? I just threw those random numbers out there as an example.

Five Guys being barely more expensive for a better quality meal was my entire point.

1

u/qmrthw 10d ago

I realized I replied to the wrong person, that reply was meant for the "if money isn't a factor" comment

5

u/hitemlow 10d ago

You walk in the door and they have a QR code for a Klarna payment plan on the wall

2

u/ChewieKong 10d ago

I’d rather get a 5 guys little hamburger over a full meal at McDonald’s.

2

u/IgnatiusRileyFreeman 10d ago

Reddit loves harping on this issue, but the one near me has burgers for $12. That's roughly equivalent what most fast food places have priced their burgers to.

2

u/SchrodingerMil 10d ago

A bacon double cheeseburger with Ketchup, Mustard, Mayo, Lettuce, Pickles, Tomatoes · Grilled Onions, Grilled Mushrooms, and Jalapeño Peppers…

Is cheaper than a Medium Big Mac meal where I live. And probably more calories too.

2

u/Spirited_Concern6824 10d ago

Try the classic combo dude, seriously. The “little” fries would be like a large at McDonalds, and the “little” burger is the same, but it’s just one patty. the burger, fries, and a shake literally only cost me $17.41.

2

u/gabriot 10d ago

Five guys really isn't that expensive if you factor in quantity. Yall just need to stop ordering the default burgers which are like over a half pounder equivalent

1

u/BoomerSoonerFUT 10d ago

It’s not even more expensive than like McDonalds.

Like $2 more at the locations by me.

1

u/Ok_Resolution8317 10d ago

My family orders 4 little cheeseburgers, 1 large fries, water. $50. Not bad at all.

1

u/LobstaFarian2 10d ago

The graphic doesnt mention money. It asks which has the best burger.

1

u/PFI_sloth 10d ago

13 bucks for a meal isn’t comparable to every other burger joint?

1

u/-_Catgirl_- 10d ago

You have to think of it this way. A lot goes into a five guys burger. Generally spend like 2-3 hours each morning hand rolling and pattying out the beef. They also tend to pay their employees a bit more than fast food joints.

1

u/Tacoman404 9d ago

Comme ci comme ca

A pair of burgers and a shared large fry is like $30-$35 which is about the same as 2 BK, Wendys or Mcdo meals.
