entertainment The massive Chinese sci-fi epic where modern engineers prevent the "Century of Humiliation."
If you're tired of Western-centric historical narratives and alternate histories where Europe always "wins," you need to know about Illumine Lingao (临高启明).
It's a legendary, 9-million-word collaborative novel written by hundreds of Chinese netizens over the last 16 years. It directly answers the "Needham Question" by completely destroying the timeline that led to Western global hegemony.
The premise: 500 modern Chinese engineers, scientists, and historians travel back to 1628 Hainan Island. Instead of just surviving, they systematically build a modern industrial state from scratch—steel, chemicals, modern agriculture, and a modernized military. They bootstrap the industrial revolution 200 years early, ensuring that China dictates the terms of the modern era and completely prevents the Century of Humiliation.
It's an incredible piece of "Industrial Party" (工业党) literature that showcases the power of collective Chinese engineering and planning.
Because the West largely ignores Chinese sci-fi that doesn't fit their specific narratives, it hasn't been translated. I decided to change that by producing a high-quality English audiobook of Volume 1. It's about 9 hours long and covers the initial expedition and the founding of the new timeline.
