Kayak fishing in Kerry

Anyone have any decent recommendations for general areas around the Kerry Coast for lure fishing from a kayak?

I’ve been to Valentia Island and Minard for a couple of sessions. Minard was good for pollock and mackerel but the launch was a bit of a mess with all the kelp. I did my research on navionics, maps etc which did pay off but any pointers welcome.

I was looking at Brandon next as the ground look promising and its a bit mote sheltered from the worse of the swell.

Im in a wilderness system’s tarpon E120 kayak, paddle power. Interested in saltwater lure fishing mostly…for now.

Coming from Italy need advices - Trout fishing

Hi everyone,

I’ll be coming to Ireland from Italy this August for a 15-day road trip, and I’m a passionate trout spinning angler.

This is the route I’m planning:

  1. Ireland West Airport Knock
  2. Achill Island
  3. Clifden
  4. Galway
  5. Doolin
  6. Dingle
  7. Portmagee
  8. Baltimore
  9. Sligo
  10. Return to Ireland West Airport Knock

During the trip, I’ll try to stop here and there to fish, but as I’ll be travelling with my girlfriend I won’t have as many opportunities as I’d like.

I would really appreciate any advice on:

  • the best rivers/loughs for wild brown trout along this route
  • spinning-friendly waters
  • permits/regulations and where to find a map of free-access waters
  • August conditions and recommended lures

I mainly fish ultralight/light spinning for trout in Italy, and I’d love to experience Irish wild trout fishing during this trip.

Thanks a lot in advance!

Wexford fishing for a Canadian visitor

Hi folks-

I’m Canadian and I’m coming to visit my in-laws for a few weeks in June. I’m thinking about picking up a rod while I’m over to try and fish the sea as they’re quite close to Morriscastle and Tinnaberna Beach. From what I’ve gathered, I believe I can fish from the sea without a licence. Does this sound right? I’m happy to acquire a licence or whatever is needed to fish legally in the country if anyone can point me in the right direction.

The last time I was over I recall signs that indicated fishing for sea bass was prohibited. They may have just been indicating limit/size but would there be areas that specifically prohibited certain species?

Any pointers would be appreciated! This would be my first time giving it a go in Ireland and I’m used to fishing lakes so it’s a bit of a change up for me.

Help with fishing permits & licenses.

Hey all,

Getting a bit bored of only catching pollack.
I bought a fly fishing rod years ago, finally want to give it a go.

  1. Do I need to buy a Salmon/Sea Trout license? Or is that only if I intend to take some home? or specific to certain waters? (located in Donegal)
  2. I am seeing the license mentioned in point 1, but also separate licenses or 1 day permits for certain waters? Are there waters that are free or cheaper to fish? I can't be paying 30 euro for 1 day of fishing, that's gonna add up quickly.

tldr: What is the cheapest way for me to get my fly fishing practice on, hopefully catch a fish or two?

Cheers all, hopefully some Mackerel soon

Sea Fishing Not seen a smooth hound post in a while here sooo

Only a short session today to start my long awaited holiday off. 2 hounds both around the same size. Ill be out again hopefully with a bit better weather for a proper session soon.

Learned from this session circle hooks are probably the best way to catch larger size fish. The hookups better and always just in a less harmful place, be using them more often from here in out.

Sea Fishing A change in the wind...

What a difference a change in the wind direct has made up on the North Coast.

Out to pop the pots out for a couple of days and took a spin on my local spots. Those big Pollock were on casts 1, 3, and 5. And kept those three nice Coalies for tea tonight from the other side of the channel.

Lots more in but returned, only wanted good fat sized ones.
