Sponsored by Morland Holmes. Introducing Post AND User Flair

Sorry, last post was a bit premature. But we have some great post and user flair I've cooked up based on categories for posts and inside jokes based on the show. Feel free to make more suggestions here and thanks so much to all for contributing. If anyone has some graphics skill for tiny flair icons, feel free to post them here as well.

Couldn't Bell Have Just Learned to Shoot Left Handed?

In the season 2 story arc with Bell getting shot and the complications from this, Bell has the potential to not be able to be a detective anymore because "detectives are required to carry a gun".

I am a trained marksman and instructor in rifle and shotgun as well as being pretty good with a pistol. I am cross dominant, meaning in my circumstance I am right handed but shoot left handed because my left eye is my dominant eye.

I learned how to shoot and was actually teaching people to shoot before I fully accepted this, so for may years I was shooting with the wrong hand.

So, my question; would Bell's inability for properly fire a gun with his dominant hand actually have ended his career? If I can learn to shoot with the wrong hand and then retrain myself to shoot properly, why couldn't Bell have been able to do the same?

I'm not saying there aren't other reasons why a detective wouldnt't be benched for palsy in a hand, it's just that the way it is framed in the story arch focuses on the inability to shoot properly

Thoughts....

Brain Attic (General Series) Love the show!

I am currently on S1 E18.

I recently started with this series and have to say that the show is simply brilliant.

I have seen other portrayals of Sherlock but this one is quite unique.

This Sherlock is dealing with his issues and also relies on other people for help.

A female Watson is something I didn't expect to work well but I have been proven wrong. I love the way how both of them care for each other.

Sherlock trusts her and also teaches her the ways of the Detective and Watson keeps Sherlock in check.

I like how in each episode Sherlock starts to ask Watson about her deductions before giving some of his own, and Watson keeps on getting better.

The dynamic between the two main leads took feels very natural. Props to both of the actors and the dialogue writers!

The other side characters Gregson and Bell are also great.

I am very excited to see this series's take on Moriarty. Also excited to see the other members of the Holmes family (if we get to see them).

Also, love the little references to the original stories, like the one in which Sherlock gives the choice between the handcuffs and the gun to the perp. (A Study in Scarlet)

I'll stay away from this sub for now to avoid spoilers. I look forward to join after completing the series.

Brain Attic (General Series) I feel like Sherlock needing Joan

I love that the show never tries to explain why their partnership works or why she quiets his mind so much.

Lately I’ve been so disheartened by interactions with people— of all kinds of relationships— that I daydream about meeting my Joan before all these disappointments finally take enough and I self-destruct. I have a lot of knowledge and I try to be helpful but that tends to go wrong or end up taking more than I have to give. I worry that the impact I could have will be shortened because of people being stupid or lacking boundaries or the slightest hint of manners.

I don’t know how to stop though. I have worked so hard on my communication skills, and I’m so careful with my words. Yet, people don’t take the time to read things or to listen , so it’s like I’m only doing this because of my own standards.

I’ve never felt more like Sherlock. The parts of myself that I’m most proud of don’t fit into this world. I mean, I have friends. It’s just that most of my interactions are with insurance folks who don’t tell me important things or dates that leave abruptly or rideshare drivers that don’t speak a word to me. I’m scared the isolation will just get worse. So I’m hoping that I meet my Joan because I can’t imagine the world quieting down on its own.

What did you think of cassie?

If the show had gone another series, I think developing Sherlocks friendship with cassie would have been a good plot ? Opinions?

Why all the dislike of Kitty?

Recently started doing a rewatch of elementary

for whatever reason I stopped about midway when it first came out, I’m trying to fix that by watching it entirely through now

I’m at the arc where Kitty joined the team and honestly I really enjoy it, loved seeing Sherlock and Joan almost take on parental roles when it came to her

Thought the character was likable too

And I also think it was a good way to show Joan coming into her own as a detective, capable of operating without Sherlock holding her hand but still not as skilled

It was almost a Batman, Nightwing, Robin dynamic

But I know a lot of fans didn’t like Kitty, personally I’m not looking forward to her leaving on my rewatch

Sponsored by Morland Holmes. Could someone please explain to me the business model of Sherlock + Joan’s relationship, because I still don’t get it

Just to clarify - I watched the show many years ago and now I’m rewatching it, and I’m on season 1 (so I’m fine with spoilers).

In S1E16, Sherlock proposes that Joan stay with him and offers her a salary. Basically he becomes her boss and pays her out of his own pocket. I don’t remember this business model ever being addressed again until season 3, when Joan becomes an independent detective.

What I don’t like about this is that it makes their partnership feel less like genuine friendship and more like a business arrangement. Sherlock has unlimited money and pays Joan because he doesn’t want to be alone. Joan stays because she’s changing careers and needs money (no judgment there, we all do).

Holmes also pays her throughout most of her training in season 1, when she isn’t functioning as a detective, which doesn’t make sense to me, since in real life trainees are usually the ones investing in the training, and not being paid for it.

I don’t think the NYPD paid them anything, right? So all of Joan’s income would have come from Sherlock. But if that’s the case, why would he pay her from his pocket if they also take client cases? Wouldn’t it make more sense to split earnings from cases? Why does she take Sherlok's money?

Sorry for ranting, but this focus on money kind of distracted me from seeing Joan as someone who is genuinely building a friendship with Sherlock.

The show person of interest is like an unofficial spin-off

after watching elementary. I've started watching the show person of interest. I can't help but feel like it's an unofficial spin-off. replace Harold Finch with Odin Reichenbach and the concept is pretty much the same.

I don't know what I expect by posting this. the juxtaposition was just a bit weird for me. had to put it out in The ether

Sherlock can tell Watson had sex from a hello and said she's joined paunches? What is that?

In season 3 episode 3, Sherlock calls Watson (14:24mins ish) and she says hello and he responds with "youve had sex" and "youve joined paunches"

What does that mean??

Sponsored by Morland Holmes. Sherlock and Joan’s dynamic

I love how Joan knows how much she should take Sherlock seriously and when not to. I like how she says a little but conveys a lot. Even though they kinda have a relationship dynamic where she takes care of him and looks after him, it never feels like shes mothering him. She checks him but always leaves space for him to take accountability and reflect. I’ve learnt a bit from her.

She’ll say her piece, see if it lands and then leaves him with it.
