Heya! It’s my first time posting on reddit, so I’m not entirely sure what I’m doing haha.
I have no experience with illustration outside the confines of my iPad, but I’d love to try making a book cover for someone one day. I’ve started looking for fake book prompts to create some material to build a portfolio, but honestly, I have no idea what I’m doing.
I would love some feedback, although I’d appreciate it if it was gentle. Going through a rough patch at my full time job I hate and feeling a lil on edge 🤪 I have lost all of my confidence in the last few months.
This was the prompt for the book:
Genre: YA Fantasy Romance
Synopsis: A runaway girl falls through a portal to a realm where the stars are alive—and one falls in love with her.
Cover direction: Girl gazing up at a glowing humanoid constellation reaching down to her.
Style: Dreamy digital art, saturated purples and golds.
Granted, I took a bit of creative liberties with the “constellation”, but I hope it translates well enough. The anatomy seems off to me, but I can’t quite put my finger on it. I’m also not sure if I did a good enough job with the color palette provided, it looks fine on my iPad but muddy on my phone.
Any advice or constructive criticism is very welcome, and if anyone has any tips on how to get started in this industry I am all ears. I swear my job is slowly killing me.
