Blake’s 7 Collection - Improvements

Just been watching the Collection boxset for Series 1 with the updated VFX, and they’re okay - enjoyed the new ship models, updated screens, the teleport effects (not too bad, all things considered).

However some effects I wish they could have included is, mainly, blaster effects for the Liberator and Federation weapons. Others I wish they could’ve improved - more linkage between the new VFX and the original scenes, and additional effects on some of the monitors, and maybe, to bolster the scope of the settings, additional live action or VFX sequences.

Something for future reference.

Thoughts everyone?

Blake's 7 detour. Moondial.

I am also watching Moondail. It has Jacqueline in it too.

Minty is a young girl that is sent off to her godmother's place. Nearby is a fancy historical manner. Minty apparently has paranormal powers and the groudskeep says that she may be the key to helping some ghost children. She goes to the sundail and gets whisked off to a 100 or so years ago. She is invisible there, you see, like a ghost. She befriends an urchin boy that works on the grounds. She is later whisked off and meets a young girl that seems to live in the manor. She is treated harshley by some woman.

Children of Auron

Well, Servalan decides the give the good people of Auron the plague.

Zelda, Cally's twin sister, telepathically calls her to come help.

Servalan holds the Liberator crew hostage and tries to use Auron's cloning lab to make some babies.

It turns out that one of Servalan's officers has it in for another officer because he got a promotion. He tells Servalan that he swapped her embryos for his own. The Liberator crew escape and go to the cloning lab because they think Servalan will not blow up her babies. Since she was tricked, they are wrong.

They manage to teleport out, but Zelda is stubborn and has to try to save the embryos from a malfuction in the incubator. Servalan blows up the lab and feels her babies die. She knows she has been tricked and fries the officer that tricked her.

The crew has the other promoted officer hostage and teleport him back to Servalan. She fries him too.

Blake's 7 detour. Watching Dark Season.

I am watching the old children's show, Dark Season. It has our beloved Servalan actress.

Mr. Eldritch has given a school and every student a new computer. They give off white light and blow wind when you turn them on. Something is not right...

CRIMMOS...!!! CRIMMOOOOS!!!

I missed Krathoon's Hostage episode, but I really feel this needs to be discussed.

Is howling out "CRIMMOS!!!" at the top of Brian Croucher's voice possibly the most cringey dialogue ever uttered in the history of scifi?

Or... is it the best... still decades before its time, ready to be appreciated in an unrealised future?

What say ye?

Season 3 Blu-Ray?

Has anyone heard whether they will be coming out with a Blu-Ray of Season 3? If so, any idea when?

City at the Edge of the World

It is a Colin Baker episode. He plays a nasty criminal that is trying to break into a vault of riches. He tricks Tarrant into lending Villa to crack the vault.

It turns out that the vault hides a teleporter to a spaceship going to better world. It is for when a civilization becomes peaceful. The spaceship will allow you to leave when it reaches it's destination. Villa gets a girlfriend, but decides theiving is more important than living with her on the planet. The civilization goes through the newly opened vault and Colin Baker's character flips out and blows up the whole place with a laser cannon.

Poor Servalan. She does not trust anyone. Could not see what was in front of her with her own two eyes.

Such a shame for Jarvik. Such a shame.

Dawn of the Gods

Orac got a little too curious and steered the Liberator towards a black hole.

Things get weird.

It turns out the black hole was a machine made by a supposed God to get Herculanium from captured space ships.

The God has a thing for Cally because he used to lord over her people. Cally whips out her gun and blows away the machine. This allows everyone to escape and the God's world goes boom.

The Volcano episode was a blast.

I mean literally. Servalan is up to her old tricks and tries to capture the Liberator and maybe this volcano base. Avon and crew outwit her.

It turns out the people in that Volcano base are dying of radiation poisoning and blow themselves up instead of being taken over by the Federation.

Powerplay was a good one.

I liked the twist with Villa and Cally's story in this episode.

I knew something was not right with those people. Way too friendly.

I liked how Servalan delivered the bad news with glee.

Also, you had this other plot with Avon trying to get the Liberator back from the Federation. It turns out he finds an ally that turns the tide.

We now have 2 new crew members.

The shape-shifting aliens

I really like how those aliens are horrible monsters and they really hate the humans.

They will blow up space stations and ram ships.

Aftermath was a meaty episode.

This was an Avon episode.

During the big battle between the Federation and the Aliens, the crew of the Liberator gets in the escape pods. Blake is nowhere to be seen for some reason. Avon gets knocked out during an explosion and put in a pod.

He wakes up on a world full of medevil bastards that are killing anyone whose pods are landing on the planet. Avon is saved by this black lady with a bow and arrow. Turns out she is the daughter of a weapons designer that fled to the planet because he got in trouble with the Federation for staging a revolt.

Servalan also ends up on the planet from a pod as well.

I will not spoil the rest of the episode but Servalan tries to manipulate Avon into going to her side. Of course it is all a trick and Avon sees through it.

Servalan totally ruins things for the weapons designer and his family because he is an enemy of the Federation.

Jacqueline Pearce's clinical depression kind of interests me.

It was kind of like that she always had to put on a show or she would get depressed.

She had to be on most of the time. Something in her brain made her sad when she was not out in public.

I have reached the end of season 2.

A whole fleet of aliens are coming and the Liberator is the only ship that can defend the galaxy.

Now, I have to watch season 3 without the new effects. Either that or wait for the Blu-ray.

The Keeper was quite good.

Jenna and Villa get captured by a Norse-like king and his court and have to play queen and fool to find the brain scan with the coordinates to Star One.

Travis and Servalan are there too looking for it.

Are the Blu rays worth the upgrade from DVD?

Blakes 7 has been one of my favourite sci fi shows since I bought the DVD's about 20 years ago. I've watched the series a few times over the years but probably not for about a decade. Felt like watching a random episode yesterday but the DVD's look horrible on the TV I have now. There's a horrible fuzzy halo around everything and it's very soft and washed out, not unwatchable but bad enough to be distracting. My classic Doctor Who DVD's look a lot cleaner, even studio shot scenes, I guess since that show is more popular they put more effort into those releases.

Normally I'm reluctant to upgrade old BBC shows to Blu ray due to most of them being primarily shot on a mix of standard def video tape and film, and there’s only so much you can do with standard def footage. I haven’t upgraded any classic Doctor Who because the DVD's still look decent enough, and I already own most of the series anyway so don't see any reason to replace them.

I know B7 is never going to look amazing due to the way it was made, but how big of an improvement are the Blu rays overall? If they were cheaper I'd probably just upgrade anyway.

Blake's 7 is a great show to unwind to

It is a serious show, but there is just enough silliness to it to make it fun.

Most of sci-fi is like that.

Babylon 5 and Lexx are also like that.
